How are you doing?

Did you enjoy VIFF movies?

I left for Tokyo on October 4.

So I missed some interesting movies in Vancouver.

As you know, there is a global warming, and it was terribly hot in the last summer in Japan.

When I left for Tokyo on October 4, it was 7 ℃ at Vancouver Airport.

But it was 32 ℃　on Octover 7 in my hometown in Japan.

It was exceptionally hot!

Hi Kato, my smiling bohemian,

Wow! Five weeks back in Japan.
You really are good to keep in touch with your roots and hope the temperatures have dropped a bit so you don't melt ..
Global warming is seemingly affecting us all.

Here in Vancouver we're brrrr cold, and wet today, so really feeling like the wet coast.
Grateful for a nice warm dry place to come home to every day that's for sure.

VIFF is always fun and saw a few good movies.
There's such a spirit of excitement around the theatres at that time and it feels like you belong to a select group of movie lovers who are all anxious to explore other worlds and other realities.

When I was younger and still working I'd sometimes even take a week off just to concentrate on going to as many as I could fit into a day without losing my mind.

Guess I'm a lot more conservative now ... two a day at tops. :)

Well, got interrupted so now it's a day later and the weather is glorious .. perfect fall day.
So the usual up and down Vancouver weather which you'll know all about.

Hallowe'en was also mild and perfect for the trick or treating kiddies.
Peter decorated a pumpkin and his yard a bit and I went over to help him hand out candy.

We had about 30 or so neighbourhood kids and were they ever adorable.

Fingers crossed for Tuesday in the USA and we're all hoping they'll show that Trump that he has gone TOO far with his fear mongering and lying/cheating ways.

Have a good trip back and look forward to hearing about it IF I ever see the elusive Kato.

One day I just know we'll bump into each other, at least I hope so.

I'm back in Vancouver!
Wow! What a beautiful day!
13 ℃ at 11 AM and almost clear at the airport.

This morning it was raining in my Japanese hometown and the temperature dropped to 19 ℃ this morning.
Here, 13 ℃ isn't too bad, is it?

I didn't sleep at all last night because I watched inflight movies as usual.
I walked to the central library from the city centre station and now writing this mail.

Talking about Trump, the whole world is worried about him.
As you say, Trump has gone TOO far with his fear mongering and lying/cheating ways as if he was a born-again Hitler.

The stories in "the Arabian Nights" were collected over many centuries by various authors, translators, and scholars across West, Central, and South Asia and North Africa.

The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature.

In particular, many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era, while others, especially the frame story, are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work Hazār Afsān which in turn relied partly on Indian elements.

What is common throughout all the editions of the Nights is the initial frame story of the ruler Shahryār and his wife Scheherazade and the framing device incorporated throughout the tales themselves.

The stories proceed from this original tale.

Some are framed within other tales, while others begin and end of their own accord.

Some editions contain only a few hundred nights, while others include 1,001 or more.

ナタリー・ポートマンは現在２５才ですが子役をしていたことがあるんですよね。
この写真を見る限り、おそらく可愛い子役だったのでしょうね。
ペドフィル（小児愛者）が夢中になる気持ちも分かりますよ。

ところでペドフィルをGOOの国語辞典で調べたら出ていません。
フリー百科事典『ウィキペディア（Wikipedia）』には出ています。
ペドフィルは“小児愛者”と和訳されているようですが幼児を性欲の対象とする人のことです。

It creeps me out.

。。と書けば俗語で、それを見るとゾッとして気味が悪くなるのよ、という意味です。

本文を読んだら次のようなことが書いてありました。

つまり、ペドフィルのキモいファンから気持ちが悪くなるようなゾッとするファンメールをもらうので、それがイヤで最近は出演する役柄を選ぶようになっている、と言う内容です。

この　creep out には次のような意味があります。

creep out

【自動詞句】 抜け出る、はい出す

【他動詞句】 〈俗〉ひどくゾッとさせる

　　これ、気味が悪い。

　　気色悪いこと言わないで。

　　ジョンは教室からこっそり抜け出した。

creep は動詞として使えば、あの蛇が動くような動きをする事ですよね。
“はう”
あるいは植物のツタが“絡みつく”
そういうときに使いますよね。
だから、なんとなくゾッとするような感じと結びつくのでしょうね。

僕が高校生の頃から使っている『三省堂　最新コンサイス英和辞典』には　creep の過去形も過去完了形も　crept　になっています。
でも、AOLの画面では、はっきりと　creeped　を使っています。
言葉は変わるものなんですよね。
高校の英語の試験で　creeped なんて書いたら馬鹿にされるのがオチでした。

このクリープ　アウト　で思い出したのが次の宣伝文句でした。

“クリープの入らないコーヒーなんて。。。”

僕が中学生だったか高校生だったか。。。？
はっきりとは忘れましたが、その頃良くテレビで流していた宣伝文句でした。

しかし、このクリープのつづりは　creep ではありません。　creap　です。
商品名ですが、日本で開発されたものなんでしょうね。
creap を　“英辞郎　on the Web”で調べてみましたが出ていません。
もちろん、『三省堂　最新コンサイス英和辞典』にも出ていません。

そう言う訳で　英語版のGOOGLE　で　“what is creap” と入れて調べたのですよ。
そうしたら、　Did you mean: what is crap と聞き返してきましたよ！
笑っちゃいますよね。
crapを辞書で引いてみてください！
つまり、GOOGLEでもcreapは、しばしば検索される言葉ではないのですよね。

それでも、引っかかったものを見てゆくと次のようなものがありました。

Creap is a powdered dairy creamer.

つまり、“クリープ”とは粉ミルクのようなものです、という事です。
つまり、これも結局、元をただせばアメリカで開発されたのでしょうか？

僕が使っている“クリープ”はカナダのトロントで製造されているものですが、
creap とは書いてありません。
カナダは公用語が英語とフランス語ですから、商品も英語とフランス語で書かれています。

英語で　coffee whitener
フランス語では　colorant à café

...このように書いてありますよ。

ところで、僕も“クリープの入らないコーヒー”を使って記事を書いたことがあるんですよ。
GOOGLEに掲載されているかどうか調べてみたら次の２つがトップページに現れました。
