彼が靴下を履いていないことに気が付きましたか----> Did you notice that he isn't wearing socks?
（この状況は彼がいるところで話しているので彼に気づかれないようにひそひそと話している。--->なので時制が一致していなくてもよい。
Did you notice that he wasn't wearing socks? ということもできるが、この場合、少し時間が経ってから話をした場合）
私は彼女がひどい病気で入院していたとは気が付かなかった---> I didn't realize that she was so sick and entered the hospital.

I like to read "Dear Abby Advice" -- an American advice column --. Some of her advice I read the other day reminded me of what happened to me a couple years ago. The advice is like this.
A woman was suffering from the relationship with her neighbor because she happened to cut a pumpkin that had vines that had crept through the fence from her neighbor's yard and grown in the woman's yard. Her neighbor insisted that the pumpkin was hers and got angry.
私はアメリカのお悩み相談コラム「Dear Abby Advice」を読むのが好きです。先日読んだアドバイスは２～３年前に私に起こったことを思い出させました。そのアドバイスはこんな内容です。一人の女性が隣人との人間関係に苦しんでいました、それというのも彼女は偶然、隣人の家からカボチャの蔓がフェンスを絡みついて彼女の庭で育ったものを切ってしまったからでした。隣人はそのカボチャは自分の物だと言い張り、腹を立てました。
Here is the part of my experience. When I hired a gardener a few years ago, he found a pumpkin on a tree in my garden and cut it. He gave it to me. I wondered why there was this pumpkin in my garden and looked around the tree. I learned that the pumpkin vines crept through the tree in my yard from my neighbor's yard.
I paid a visit to the next door neighbor, apologized to them and returned the pumpkin. I felt embarrassed even though my gardener was the one that found it. They didn't know about the pumpkin growing in their garden. The wife said, "I'll give it to you if you like. Please feel free to have it." However, I returned it to her. A few days later, she brought me a half of a whole pumpkin pie she made. At that time, I received it with appreciation. I'm a lucky person who has a good next door neighbor.
これは私が経験したことです。数年前、植木屋さんを雇ったとき、彼はうちの庭でカボチャが木に絡んでいるのを見つけて、それを切って私に渡しました。わたしはなぜカボチャが庭でなっていたのだろうかと思いまして、その木の周りを見に行きました。そのカボチャはお隣の庭から我が家の木をつたってなったものだと分かりました。わたしはお隣さんを訪ねてそのカボチャをお返しして謝りました。植木屋さんがそのカボチャを見つけたとしても（切り落とした）私はとても恥ずかしかったです。お隣さんはカボチャが成長していたのを知りませんでした。奥様は「差し上げますから、もしよろしければ召し上がってくださいな」とおっしゃいましたが、私はカボチャをお返ししてきました。 その数日後、その奥様が作ったパンプキンパイをホール（丸いパイ型１個分）の半分を持ってきてくださいました。今度はわたしはお礼を言っていただきました。私はよい隣人を持っていてとても幸運です。

*make sureは必ず～するように、というときに使う。訳はbe sureと似ているが、使い方が異なる。
be sure to とは言えるが、make sure toにはならない。make sure ＋（that)主語＋動詞
