読書 その九 アーモリー・ショー

1914年に彼は、ホーマー・ボスの運営する、ニューヨーク近代派のインディペンデント・
スクールに加わりました。　彼の学生仲間には、スティアート・デービス、モリス・
キャンター、そしてＡ．Ｓ．ベイリンソンがいました。　
「みんなアーモリー・ショーの事を話していました。
キュービズムでいっぱいの雰囲気でした。　ヴァン・ゴッホ、ゴーギャンの複製、そして
後期19世紀の巨匠達の作品が学校の壁を埋めたのでした。私は、いったい何がどうなって
いるか解らないままこの興奮の中にいました。　このとき初めて安堵を感じ始めました。」



In 1914 he joined the modernist Independent School in New York, run by
Homer Boss. Among his fellow students were Stuart Davis, Morris Kantor and
A. S. Baylinson. "Everybody was talking about the Armory Show. Cubism was
in the air. Reproductions of Van Gogh, Gauguin, and the masters of the late
nineteenth century filled the walls of the school. I was caught up in this excite-
ment without really understanding what it was all about. For the first time I
began to feel at home."

1910年（明治４３）に、クニヨシは、ニュー・ヨークに来ました。ここでも又、
時たまの半端な仕事にほんの少しの現金、最初の冬彼は、オーバーなしで過ごしました。　
「でもこのときの私は、絵の勉強を続ける事をはっきりと決めていました。どう言う訳か、
この目標は十分しっかりしていたので何をしても何時も我慢出来たのです。」

彼の父親の芸術家の友人が、工房の掃除と引き換えに部屋と食事を与えてくれました。
彼の提案でクニヨシは、ナショナル・アキャデミー・スクールに入りました。　車代も無く
彼は、毎日66番から109番通りまで歩いて行き、そして戻ったのです。　しかし美術一般
教養の教育は、もう彼の好みにそぐわなくなって来ていたので半年後に止めました。
短い期間でしたが、彼はヘンライ・スクールを試してみました。

彼は、メトロポリタンに行くまでは美術館の中に入ったことはありませんでした、そこで
彼の最初の賞賛の対象は、ピエール・コットのポール・アンド・ヴァージニアでした。
全てこの間彼は、自分で生計をたてて行かなければなりませんでした、それで彼の絵の勉強は
長い間途切れたのです。　ある一冬彼は、シラキュースのホテルで働きました―　1913年、
アーモリー・ショウの年、それで彼は見損なったのです。



In 1910 he came to New York. Again, odd jobs and little money; that first
winter he spent without an overcoat. "But by this time I had definitely decided
to continue studying art. Somehow that aim was firm enough so that no matter
what I did it was always bearable." An artist friend of his father's gave him　board
and meals in return for having his studio cleaned. At his suggestion Kuniyoshi
entered the National Academy school. Lacking carfare he walked every day
from 66th to 109th Street and back. But academic teaching was no longer to his
taste and he stopped after a half year. For a short time he tried the Henri school.
He had never been inside a museum until he visited the Metropolitan, where his
first admiration was for Pierre Cot's Paul and Virginia. All this time he had to
make his living, so that there were long gaps in his art study. One winter he
worked in a hotel in Syracuse - 1913, the year of the Armory Show, which he
missed.
