At Miller's urging he submitted his most finished composition, of war refu-
gees, to an annual exhibition of the Academy, which of course rejected it. This
was the first and last time he sent to the Academy. Afterwards he sent the paint-
ing back to his father, to show him that he was now an artist. His first pictures
exhibited were two in the opening exhibition of the new Society of Independent
Artists in the spring of 1917, when he was still a student. That same year Louis
Bouché invited him and Brook to exhibit at the Penguin, an informal club of
artists in revolt against the Academy. The club had a floor in an old brownstone
house on East 15th Street, where they held a sketch class, exhibitions and parties,
including a famous annual costume ball that paid their expenses for the whole
year. Walt Kuhn was the moving spirit, and among the most active members
were Jules Pascin and "Pop" Hart. Contact with this exciting and stimulating
group meant much to Kuniyoshi.

ウォルト・カーンは、1877年(明治10年)にニュー・ヨークのブルックリンで生まれました。
15歳の時、雑誌に初めて売れたドローイングに "Walt" とサインしたそうです。
1893年、ブルックリンのPolytechnic Instituteでアート・クラスを専攻しました。
1899年、60ドルを片手にカリフォルニアに移り、サン・フランシスコでWASP Magazineの
イラストレーターとして働きます。
