《オラトリオ『メサイア』 HWV 56》は、ゲオルク・フリードリヒ・ヘンデルが1741年に作曲したオラトリオ。イエス・キリストの生涯を題材とした声楽曲で、歌詞は旧約聖書の預言書「イザヤ書」や「ハガイ書」「マラキ書」などによる。ヘンデルの代表作の1つであり、特に第2部終曲の「ハレルヤ・コーラス」はよく知られている。 作曲は1741年8月22日から9月14日までのわずか24日間で行われ、1742年4月13日にアイルランドの首都ダブリンで初演された。初演は大成功したが、ロンドン公演での評判は良くなかった。しかし、1750年以降のロンドンの捨子養育院での再演により次第に好評を獲得し、ヘンデルの没後も長きにわたって高い評価を受けている。 初演当時の楽器編成は、独唱・合唱と弦楽器（"The trumpet shall sound" のみトランペットが加わる）のみの小規模なものであったが、改訂を経てティンパニやオーボエが追加されていった。数百人を超える管弦楽と合唱で演奏されることもあったが、近年ではピリオド楽器を用いた小規模な編成による演奏も多い。この動画の演奏も小規模な編成によるもので、バロック調律 (A=415Hz) のため半音低いように感じるかもしれない。
