2021年１月20日、アメリカ合衆国の大統領就任式で、22歳でアメリカ初の桂冠詩人のアマンダ・ゴーマン（Amanda Gorman）が、詩を朗読しました。大統領就任式で詩の朗読は、1961年ケネディ大統領の就任式でのロバート・フロストなど何度かあったようですが、アマンダ・ゴーマンは最年少。黄色のコートで登場し、堂々と言葉の力で新たな時代の到来を告げました。こちらがその動画です。
日本では、こういう政治的な公式の場で詩人が登場することは稀ですが、アマンダ・ゴーマンの詩は、政治や社会の言葉を積極的に使っており、明るい希望に満ちたものになっています。言葉の力で、これから訪れる新時代を祝福するものでした。政治家の言葉は伝達に限界がありますが、詩は政治家では伝えられないものを伝えることができていたのではないかと思います。
タイトルは “The Hill We Climb”(私たちがのぼる丘)というもので、この就任式のために作られた詩です。書きかけだった詩を完成させたのは、１月６日の夜。その日に起きた議事堂襲撃事件の後のことでした。
この朗読を聞いてから、この詩について紹介しようと思い、自分で翻訳を始めたのですが、この数日で、いくつか翻訳が発表されました。しかし、彼女の朗読と、その独特のリズムと比べると、なんかしっくりきません。ということで自分で最後まで訳してみたいと思いました。下のリンクは、すでに発表されている翻訳です。
