To all friends of Tokiyuki Nobuhara-sensei
I send the sad news informing Tokiyuki Nobuhara-sensei's passing away.
When I visited Toki last year at the Rehabilitation Center in Kobe, he seemed rather well in spite of the aftereffects of cerebral infarction, but afterwards, he suffered from a complication of kidney trouble, and had to go to the Hirono Takahara Hospital in Kobe.
Unfortunately it became difficult even for his family to see him in the hospital during the COVID-19 Disaster. His condition became gradually critical, and passed away in the hospital on October 23 (at the age of 83). The family funeral was held on October 25.
Nobuhara-sensei graduated from the faculty of theology, Doshisha University, and after dedicating himself to the frontier missionary at Itami, went to Claremont to study process theology. He was influenced by Katumi Takizawa who advocated The-anthropology of Immanuel(GOD-WITH-US) aiming at integrating Karl Barth and the Kyoto Buddhistic philosophy, especially Kitaro Nishida. Takizawa was one of the pioneers of the Buddhist-Christian dialogue in Japan.
I met Nobuhara-sensei for the first time at Claremont in 1984, when I was invited by Prof.John Cobb to attend the meeting of "Whitehead Relativity Group".
Nobuhara-sensei also invited me to the forum of Interreligious dialogue between "Process theology and the Kyoto School of Buddhist philosophy" which he presided in AAR.
Although Nobuhara-sensei is a protestant while I am a catholic, we share the standpoint of "Non-denominational Christianity" . I appreciate his "Theology of Fraternity and friendship in Jesus" and his practice to preach the Gospel in the world.
I would like to pray for him according to the lay-led liturgy of Christianity which he has advocated in his book "the horizon of dialogical theology"(written in Japanese only)

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:4-8)
〇 Having among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus、Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name. (2:5-11)

Among many books written by Nobuhara-sensei, I would like to introduce
”Peace on Earth as in Heaven" (平安ありて平和なる）
This book was written in 1976, when Barack Obama visited Hiroshima as the U.S.A. president for the first time. Obama entered Hiroshima Peace Memorial Musuem, and after dedicating flowers to the A-bomb vivtims, embraced Shigeaki Mori, a survivor of Atomic Bomb Disaster.
Nobuhara-sensei was moved by Obama's speech at Hiroshima, and wrote his book, "Peace on earth as in heaven".
昨年、私が神戸にお見舞いに行きましたときは、まだお元気で脳梗塞の後遺症の克服のためのリハビリに専念しておられた延原時行先生は、その後、腎臓病の併発で苦しまれ、神戸の広野高原病院に急遽入院されたということは伺っておりました。
その後、コロナ禍のためご家族の面会もかなわない状況で、先生の病状は次第に悪化し、神戸の広野高原病院にて10月23日に帰天されました。（享年８３）
本日25日、家族葬で告別式がおこなわれたとのこと、義妹の佐々木順子様より連絡を頂きました。長期にわたる介護生活、ご家族のご心労、いかかばかりであったかと思います。
ここで、延原先生ご自身が提唱された、「在家キリスト教称名」を唱えて、故人を偲びたいと存じます。
ー主の御名を讃えてー
○キリスト・イエスの心を私たちの心としましょう
◎憐れみ豊な神は、私たちをこの上なく愛してくださり、その愛によって、罪のために死んでいた私たちをキリストと共に生かし、キリスト・イエスによって共に復活させ、共に天の王座に着かせてくださいました。こうして神は、キリスト・イエスにおいて私たちにお示しになった慈しみにより、その限りなく豊な恵みを来たるべき世に現そうとされたのです。事実、あなた方は、恵みにより、信仰によって救われました。このことは自らの力によるのではなく、神の賜物です（エペソ2:4-8）
〇キリストは神の身分でありながら、神と等しいものであることに固執しようとは思わず、かえって自分を無にして、しもべの身分になり、人間と同じ者になられました。人間の姿で現れ、ヘリ下って、死に至るまで、それも十字架の死に至るまで従順でした。このため、神はキリストを高く上げ、あらゆる名にまさる名をお与えになりました。（ピリピ2:5-11）

先生は同志社大学の神学部を出られ、開拓伝道に専念された後、滝沢克己に師事したのちに米国でプロセス神学を学ばれたかたです。カトリックの伝統に親しんできた私とは考えの違いもありましたが、一切の疑似宗教的イデオロギーを越えた根源的な経験を重んじ、それを哲学的省察と統合したうえで「無者のキリスト者」の立場から、「無の場所に於いて」「世俗の中の福音伝道」を考えるところは共通でした。
先生のご経歴、お仕事についてはいずれ詳しく述べさせて頂きますが、ここでは、先生の主著のひとつである
『平安ありて平和なるーホワイトヘッドの平和論、西田哲学、わが短歌神学日記』（考古堂 2017/2/20）を紹介します。
延原時行先生のこの著書は、2016年5月27日 米国の現職大統領として初めて広島を訪問し、平和記念資料館を見学した後に、原爆死没者慰霊碑に献花したバラク・オバマ氏が、被爆者の森重明さんを抱きしめている写真を表紙としています。それから4年5ヶ月経過した現在は、オバマ元大統領の「核兵器廃絶」の願い、「広島と長崎が核戦争の夜明けとして知られる未来ではなく、私たち自身の道義的な目覚めとなる未来」の実現への呼びかけが、ICANの運動として受け継がれ、核廃絶条約の批准に向けて実を結びつつあります。
4年前のこの出来事をいま思い出しつつ、先生の志されたお仕事を後にのこされたものが受け継ぐことの大切さと、その今日的な意義を考えています。
オバマ氏や 平安ありて平和なる
人類（ひと）コア矛盾懺悔友抱く
延原先生の短歌は、その「神学的な志」をのべるもので、
ただの花鳥諷詠ではありませんが、たんなる観照ではなく
南原繁の『形相』所収の短歌と同じく、政治的な行為と
不可分の情意的内容をうちに潜めています。
