今回は、英語の絵本です。でも名著です。絵本ですが、ここでは文章のみです。絵も躍動的で素晴らしいのですが、文のみでも臨場感 が伝わってきます。
文のみですので、全体の雰囲気と数語の単語を先に説明します。全部で３２ページの絵本です。
いっぱしのカーレーサー気取りの小さな男の子（a small boy） と、ちょっぴりとぼけた表情（耳の垂れた）の大きな犬（a large dog）が、緑色のゴーカート（go-cart、うばぐるまのような）に乗って、”ぶっちぎり”のレース、それではいっしょに、近所の坂道も、ドロンコも、でこぼこ道も、野原も、我が家のゴールに向かって、「用意、ドン！」。
dump : ごみの山、 mud : ぬかるみ、 bump : がたがた道、 bend : 曲り道、 mend : 修理する

Down the hill
across the dump
through the mud
and over the bump.
Under the bridge
around the bend
there's a bit I'll have to mend.
Up the steps
turn left turn right
down again, hang on tight!
Nearly there, we're doing fine
and up ahead I see the line.
First to finish is the winner!
And just in time as mum shouts
DINNER! 』
dump-bump, bend-mend, fine-line, winner-dinner というように同じ母音と子音になって、韻を踏んでいます。 （第９１回）
