It has been a standard theory that the US dropped the atomic bombs to minimize the damage.
But if they wanted to stop the war quickly, they should have announced before the bombings that they would use nuclear weapons unless the Japanese surrendered, but they did not do so because it was a massacre of civilians for "testing."
