琵琶湖には、自動観測所が５地点ある。
滋賀県の管轄分が３カ所、国土交通省の管轄分２カ所だ。
国土交通省の観測所はまだ運用しており、データも公開されているが、滋賀県の観測所は今は運用されていない。
予算不足が原因だ。
撤去するお金もないので、とりあえず現状を維持している。
維持管理費に、年間８００万円ほどかかる。
一人分の人件費だ。
作った時に、後の管理費について考えたのかな、と疑問に思う。
滋賀県が継続的に提供している環境データも、公表はしているが実際は非常に使いにくい。
最近、アメリカの学生からメールが届いた。
琵琶湖の水温データを送ってほしいということだった。
彼自身が、滋賀県の二つの組織のデータベースにアクセスしたが、データを手に入れることはできなかったと言っている。
それはそうだろうと思う。
日本人でも入手しにくいのだから、外国人ではなおさらだ。
公開するのなら使いやすい形にすべきだろう。
そうでなければ、ユーザーに対する嫌がらせにつながる。
一考を促したい。

This is Ben Kraemer, a grad student in Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I am working on a project where I model the impact of lake temperature trends on stratification and ecosystem metabolism in lakes around the world.
I would like to increase the number of lakes in my analysis but so far I have struggled to pull together data from lakes at relatively low latitude like Lake Kinneret. I am wondering if you would be able to contribute the Lake Biwa long term (1963-2014) temperature profiles to my efforts.
I tried to access the data from the Fisheries Experimental Station of Shiga Prefecture website but could not find the database.
I am most interested in the temperature profiles at or near a deep point in the lake.
Let me know if you would be willing to contribute data to my effort.
