去年、京都の紅葉は、関係者が10年に1度の鮮やかさだと評した程に美しかったのである。

私は親しい知人に、「僕の写真は、現代の葛飾北斎、尾形光琳、長谷川等伯、俵屋宗達、etc.etcである」、と、云い放っていたのである。
或いは東山魁夷、須田国太郎,etc.etc.であると言っていたのである。

かつて、ＮＨＫがチャン・ツィイーの素晴らしい特集を放映した。
彼女は「美は一瞬の中にしかない」と言った。
私は、痛く同感したのである。
私は写真の技巧は一切知らない。
知りたいと思わないのである。
全ては一瞬の中に在る事を知りぬいているからだ。
カメラはＳＯＮＹのデジタル一眼レフを使用している。
私がＳＯＮＹの技術を愛している事は、「文明のターンテーブル」の読者は御存知の通り。

大病後のリハビリとして、後、4年間は、一切のビジネスがもたらすストレスから離れて、京都に浸らなければならない、そう思い定めているのである。
 
東大に行くか京大に行くかを考えていた高校1年生の時に、桑原武夫と時実利彦の講演会が、私の故郷である仙台であった。
これを聴いていた私は、桑原武夫の後を継ぐのは自分だと確信したのである。
高校2年生の時に、私に、二度も世界史の講義を任せた佐藤先生は、そんな私を見抜いていたのである。
先生は階段で私をつかまえて言ったのだった。
「君は京大に残って、京大を、その両肩に背負って立たなければならない」
そのような、超エリートとしての約束された人生を捨てて生きる事を、神からの使命として与えられた私は、ずっと思い続けていたのである。
誰よりも早く、リタイアしなければならない、と。
フィレンツェに3カ月、パリに3カ月、ハワイに3カ月…ハワイは当時ゴルフフリークだった私が好きな場所だったのであるが、後の3カ月が、浮かばなかった。
それが実は京都で在ったのだなと今は気付いているのである。
ビジネス人生の最後に日本に棲息している悪と遭遇した今、私の思いを叶えてくれているのが、京都なのである。
その京都を私が毎日の様に撮った。
それは土門拳が室生寺に惚れて、室生寺を撮り続けた魂と何ら変わらないものなのである。
