Hello students, teachers, ALTs, parents, and everybody here!
My name is Kiyoshi Yamauchi. I am Professor of English at Niimi University.
I really enjoyed listening to your wonderful presentations. I know some of you were really nervous before your performance, but I think everyone did a very good job on the stage. I know everybody practiced very hard for this contest with the help of your English teachers and your ALT. I was very much impressed with your hard work. Congratulations!
(まだ習っていない文法事項も使いますので、日本語でもお話ししたいと思います)
According to the schedule, I believe I have 20 minutes. So this time I am going to make some brief comments on each of your performances.
I have been invited to this annual speech contest every year since 2015. Every time I am very much looking forward to listening to students’ presentations. But at the same time, I am supposed to make some remarks at the end of the contest. I have to have a new topic every year because some of the students attended the contests in the previous year, or even in previous years and the same English teachers and ALTs are down there to listen to my speech every time.
This year I am going to talk about one of my English teacher in my junior high school days. His name is Mr. Yasutaka Iwasaki. Mr. Iwasaki moved to my junior high school when I started my 2nd year of junior high school. He taught us English for 2 years. He was my homeroom teacher when I was in the 3rd year of junior high. He was also a coach for the baseball club which I belong to. So I learned a lot of things from Mr. Iwasaki. In my student days, there was no JET Program in Japan, so we did not have ALTs in our classroom. We did not have many chances to talk to English speaking people back then. But Mr. Iwasaki invited an American woman in one of his classes one day. In that class, I asked her a question in English and had a very short conversation in English. I was very happy to be able to know I could communicate in English OK. And we went to Kyoto and Nara for our school excursion. Before our school trip, Mr. Iwasaki encouraged us to try to speak to English speaking people in Kyoto and Nara. One of my friends and I spoke to an American lady in Kyoto and had a brief conversation. I was very happy again. We even got her autograph like this.
After my graduation from junior high school, I sometimes met Mr. Iwasaki in our school reunions. Last time I met Mr. Iwasaki in person was on January 2, 2020. I am very sad to say, but he passed away on November 5 this year. He was 85. He was the teacher who taught me the basic of English. He motivated me to study English, and always encouraged me to study more. He was happy to know that I became an English teacher like him.
So students, please find your “Mr. Iwasaki” or “Ms. Iwasaki”. Your English teacher is your model. Your English teacher is the person who studied and is studying English very hard and has become very good at English. Your English teacher is a person who can give you good advice on how to study English. Your English teacher is a very good example for you to follow.
Mr. Iwasaki once told me that you can find chances to study English anywhere. So, students, find chances and study English very hard. Thank you very much.
