プロセスとパターン（1）

　　'By _pattern_ we mean aspects of the apparent orderliness of life. By _process_ we mean the mechanisms that generate these patterns.' (Eldredge & Cracraft 1980: 1)
　　「_パターン〔模様、様式〕_によって、われわれが意味するのは、生命 life の明白な、整然とした様 orderliness 〔整然性、秩序正しさ〕の諸局面〔諸側面、諸様相〕である。_プロセス〔過程〕_によって、われわれが意味するのは、これらの諸パターンを生成する諸メカニズムである。」（試訳）


　The Oxford Paperback Dictionary (1979)によると、patternとは、
　　'n. 1. an arrangement of lines or shapes or colours, a decorative design. ［中略］
　　 5. the regular form of order in which a series of actions or qualities etc. occur, _behaviour patterns_.


　そして、processとは、
　　'n. 1. a series of actions or operations used in making or manufacturing or achieving something.
　　 2. a series of changes, a natural operation, _the digestive process_.
　　 3. a course of events or time. ［中略］
　　 v. to put through a manufacturing or other process or course of treatment.

　というわけで、processという動詞には、処理する、とか、加工するという意味もある。プロセスチーズ processed cheese とは、貯蔵中のさらなる熟成または劣化を避けるように扱われた treated チーズということである。
