謙虚であること

　　　I believe the first test of a truly great man is his humility. I do not mean by humility, doubt of his own power, or hesitation of speaking his opinions; but a right understanding of the relation between what he can do and say, and the rest of the world's sayings and doings. All great men not only know their business, but usually know that they know it; and are not only right in their main opinions, but they are right in them; only they do not think much of themselves on that account.


鶴見俊輔さんは、あるとき古在由重さんに、大山巌元帥についてこう尋ねたそうです。
「古在さんは、子どものときに、大山元帥に抱かれたことがあるそうですね。」

すると古在由重さんはこう答えたそうです。
「ほんとうはもっとおもしろいんだ。沼津の裏山で小学生のぼくがひとりで遊んでいると、向こうからふとった人が歩いてきた。写真で見たことがある大山元帥だと思って、おじぎをした。すると、大山さんも立ち止まって、きちんとおじぎを返した。他に見ている人が誰もいないのに。」

また、大山元帥の伝記のなかの息子の回想録によると、「総司令官てなにをするんですか」という問いに、「知っていることでも、知らんようにきくことよ」という答えが返ってきたそうです。
