デスクが昂奮していた理由がそれでよく分かった。
社に上がると殺気立ちながらも特ダネの昂奮が編集局の中に沸き立って伝わってくる。
社会部長は前夜から泊まり込んでいたという。　
東アジア反日武装戦線の蛮行
こっちの顔を見ると夕刊のトップをお前が書けという。
「ホシは半ダースはいる。パクリに行く刑事に記者を張りつかせているが、向こうはまく気だ。うまく逮捕現場に行きつけるかどうか。それも踏まえて逮捕の臨場感を書いてくれ」。
その少し前、逮捕に向かうデカが警視庁を出た。
結果はみんなまかれた。
それでもカメラマンのひとりが食いついて逮捕の瞬間を撮った。
それが主犯格の大道寺将司だった。
夕刊の出稿締め切りの直前だった。
カメラマンから話を聞きながら一気に180行を書きあげ、そのまま活字になった。
のちに新聞協会賞の受賞理由に「迫真の描写」と評された一文だが、個人的にも思いのある一文だった。
驚いたのは捕まった大道寺ら「大地の牙」が明かした彼らの本当の狙いだ。

大道寺らは塩素酸ナトリウムを基剤にした爆薬をつくり、74年８月中旬、御用邸から戻られる天皇陛下のお召列車が通過する赤羽の鉄橋に仕掛けに行った。　
真夜中、爆薬を橋脚の下まで運んだが、大道寺が怖じ気づいて出直した。
日本人の意識が実行を阻んだ　
翌日、再び橋脚にたどり着き、あとは起爆装置をセットする段になって、大道寺がまた誰かに見はられている気がするといって撤収した。　
二度にわたって天皇暗殺計画を断念した「大地の牙」グループはここで計画を変更し、二つの缶は次の標的、三菱重工に仕掛けることになった。　
大道寺は87年、死刑が確定したが、多発性骨髄腫を患い、死に勝る苦痛の中でこの５月、東京拘置所で死んだ。
やれば抵抗なくやれた天皇暗殺を二度も断念した本当の理由を彼は最後まで語ろうとしなかった。
あるいは彼の中に残っていた僅かな日本人の意識が実行を阻んだという見方も有力だった。
