According to some sources, China is likely to mine the so-called rare metals including manganese at the two places in the open sea near to the Japanese exclusive economic zone whose center is Minami-torishima Island belonging to the Ogasawara Islands.
This project is expected to start next year, and the amount of those metals is said to be about 7,500 tons at the most. Extremely high technologies are needed in those projects, and this kind of initiative will be the first ever in the world. If the commercial development is admitted in those areas, it would give a great influence in the international supply chain for the rare metals. And there is a high possibility China would monopolize the market.
