According to a news report, medical treatment using the so-called iPS technology was carried out in Japan for the first time in the world in Japan. the treatment was done for the patient who are suffering from eye disease. It is said that the iPS cells were made from the patient's skin cells and it was transplanted into the patient's eye's cell. And the operation was finished successufully. The operation was carried out about seven years after Professor Yamanaka of Kyoto University produced the iPS cell for the first time in the world. This means it made a historic step foward in this medical field.

On Wednesday, September12, RIKEN(Institute of Physical and chemical Research) and Foundation for Biomedical Research and Innovation announced that they transplanted the induced pluripotent stem cells to a patient who sufferred from a serious eye disease successfully for the first time in the world. The iPS cells were produced from the patient's skin cells and then were transplanted into the patient's retina. They say that the operation was done successfully, but they have to continue to confirm the treatment's effect at least for a year. This is the world's first clinical application to a human body of the iPS technology since Professor Yamanaka Shinya successfully produced the iPS cells seven years ago for the first time in the world. There is no doubt Japan has made a big step foward in this promising medical field ahead of the rest of the world.
