今日もジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　からですがトピックは単語ではなく慣用句・連語です。
Calvin dug his hands down in his pockets. "You're holding out on me."
"So 're you," Charles Wallace said.
"holding out on" を調べます。
Dictionary.com:　hold out on (someone) To withhold something from: Don't hold out on me; start telling the truth.
Merriam-Webster: to withhold something (as information) from
本当の事や情報を言わない、隠している時に使う表現ですね。

truck and drupe

Reader's Digestには毎回単語テストのページがあり７月号は野菜・植物に関する単語がテーマでその中に次ぎの文がReader's Digestにありましたが "truck" が私の知らない意味のようです。
"George transports his truck by van to the farmers' market."
バンでトラックを運ぶとありますが私の知っているトラックでは何か変です。　いつも難しい単語ばかりのコラムですが辞書を引かなくても答えと解説が次ぎのページにあるので一応読んでいます。　引用文のトラックには次ぎの説明がありました。
truck: vegetables raised for market
辞書でも確認します。
American Herritage Dictionary: Garden produce raised for the market
その他の単語も知らないものばかりでしたが "drupe: fruit like a plum or cherry" が気になりました。　何故なら７月に話題にした"stone fruit" の事ではと思ったからです。
Wiktionaryで "drupe" を引くと "A stone fruit" とありました。

a sport

次の文はジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　からです。
"What kind of family?"
"They all have runny noses. I'm third from the top of eleven kids. I'm a sport."
この "a sport" が分かりません。　文の前後からしてアスリートとか "someone who engages in sports" では無さそうです。
そこで辞書です。
OneLook Quick Definitions:　(biology) an organism that has characteristics resulting from chromosomal alteration
この意味だとにらみましたがもっと他の辞書も見てみましょう。
Dictionary.com:　Biology. an organism or part that shows an unusual or singular deviation from the normal or parent type; mutation.
「どんな家族」と質問されて "They all have runny noses."　（鼻たらし）が前にあるので、自分はそんな遺伝を受け継いでいないと言う意味で使っているようです。

wick away

Reader's Digest７月号の "Strategies for a Better Night's Sleep" 記事の続編です。
Wick away the problem
Buy pyjamas in fabrics designed to absorb or drain moisture.
タイトルの "Wick away the problem" が分かりませんので "wick" を辞書で調べます。
いつものようにDictionary.comを最初に見ると名詞と動詞の意味が出ています。
noun 1. a bundle or loose twist or braid of soft threads, or a woven strip or tube, as of cotton or asbestos, which in a candle, lamp, oil stove, cigarette lighter, or the like, serves to draw up the melted tallow or wax or the oil or other flammable liquid to be burned.
verb (used with object) 2. to draw off (liquid) by capillary action.
名詞の蝋燭の芯の意味で使われているのは前にも読んだ事があるのを思い出しましたが動詞では毛細管現象を利用して液体を吸い取る意味になるのですね。　従って、RDの記事は吸湿性の良いパジャマを着るのは良い睡眠をとるのに効果があると言っているのですね。

if the dog so much as sighs

Reader's Digestの７月号に "Strategies for a Better Night's Sleep" と題された記事がありその中で：
Despite its reputation as a relaxer, alcohol keeps you in the lighter, less restorative stages of sleep, when you're likely to wake if the dog so much as sighs.
と書かれた文がありましたが、この最後の "if the dog so much as sighs" の意味が今ひとつ分かりません。
慣用句かと思って調べたのですが "dog" でも "sigh" でも調べましたが該当する様な慣用句は見つかりませんでした。
If the dog so much as looks at the food give a brisk leash correction and move quickly in the opposite direction.
If the dog so much as looks at the bird, scold him.
if the dog so much as bares his teeth at her.
の様な表現は分かるので、ここは素直に犬と一緒（同じ部屋あるいはベッドで？）に寝る人について言っていると解釈するしか無さそうですが、どなたか犬と一緒に寝ている方で犬の溜息、寝息で睡眠不足の方はいらっしゃいますか？　

What gives?

次ぎの文もジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time" からです。
"A change in gene," Charles Wallace quoted, "resulting in the appearance in the offspring of a character which is not present in the parents but which is potentially transmissible to its offspring."
What gives around here? Calvin asked.
この "What gives" はいかにも会話文という感じですが私は知らない表現です。
OneLookで "what" の慣用句を調べるとWiktionaryがリストに出てきました。　そこでの説明は：
Interjection: what's cooking (or what's new, what's up, what gives)
(idiomatic) What's happening?; what's going on?; how are you?; Hi there babe, what's cooking?
なるほど、"what's cooking?" も知りませんでしたね。

fast

今朝のニュースでオバマ氏の経済アドバイザーとのインタビューをＴＶで見ていたら、アドバイザーが　"He has to hit the groud running." と言っているのが耳に入りました。 この表現については今年の３月２４日に話題にしたので詳しくはそちらを見て欲しいのですが、意味は　"hit the ground running: to immediately work very hard and successfully at a new activity. example: If elected, they promise to hit the ground running in their first few weeks of office" でまさにこの例と同じ状況で使われていました
ところで今日のトピックはこの表現ではなく、誰でも知っている "fast" です。
やっとリーダーズダイジェストを借りられる順番が回ってきました。　と言っても借りれたのは７月号です。
早速ジョークの個所を読みましたが私のブログに取り上げるのに格好のジョークがありました。
The shopper was visibly angry as she tried to return a blouse to the department store.
"What's wrong with it?" asked the clerk.
"It faded," she said. "You told me the colours were fast. And the very first time I washed it, it faded."
"Well," said the cleak, "I told you it was fast, didn't I?"
残念ながらオチが分かりませんでしたが "fast" に私の知らない意味もあるのが鍵である事は分かります。
そこで "fast" を辞書で調べると次ぎの様な意味もあるのが分かりました。

ブラウスを買う前に客が受け取った店員の言葉の意味はこれだったのですね。

Chinese geomancy

先日10kmランを終えた直後は次ぎのハーフマラソン（１１月３０日）に備えて十分練習をしようと反省したのですが、この３連休も卓球の試合があったり管理組合の仕事がなんやかんやあって結局全然ジョッギングはしませんでした。練習の機会はあと３回の週末だけなので今週末は絶対に忘れずに走るぞと思ったのですが、ハーフマラソンの前週は旅行の予定が入っていることに気が付きました。これではまたきついハーフマラソンになりそうです。
今日の話題は "geomancy" という聞きなれない単語です。
ASJの会報に次ぎの文がありました。
In Japanese garden art we see firstly the influence of Chinese geomancy in the positioning of a building with high ground to the north and water to the south.
コンテキストからすると "geomancy" は風水の事のようですが、確か風水を表す言葉は別にあったはずと和英辞典を見ると　"feng shui" が出てきます。　"feng shui" をOneLook Quick Definitionsでは次ぎのように説明しています。
rules in Chinese philosophy that govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to patterns of yin and yang and the flow of energy (qi); the favorable or unfavorable effects are taken into consideration in designing and siting buildings and graves and furniture
今度は "geomancy" を同じくOneLook Quick Definitionsで調べて見ると：
divination by means of signs connected with the earth (as points taken at random or the arrangement of particles thrown down at random or from the configuration of a region and its relation to another)
ちょっと分かり難いですね。とりあえず "divination" の意味も確認しますと "the art or gift of prophecy (or the pretense of prophecy) by supernatural means" とあります。　何となく分かってきましたが、別の辞書で "geomancy" を更に見てみます。　Dictionary.comでの説明は "divination by geographic features or by figures or lines." と簡単に済ましていますが、語源の説明に from Late Greek ge?manteia, divination by signs from the earth とありますので、 "geomancy" はギリシャ時代からあった事が推測できますし、"Chinese geomancy" イコール "feng shui" と言うか、 "feng shui" を英語で言うと "Chinese geomancy" になると理解できます。

wouldn't put it past

キャベツは青虫との戦いに負けましたがブロッコリーとカリフラワーは何とか青虫に勝ち、まだ５cm程の大きさですが蕾が膨らんできました。食べれる程の大きさになるのに後何日かかるのか初めての栽培経験なので分かりませんが楽しみです。
さて本題です。"Ben and Me" を読み終えたので今度は "A Wrinkle in Time" と題されたやはりジュニア用（恐らく中学生用）の小説を読むことにしました。
次ぎの文には難しい単語は全くありませんが "wouldn't put it past" の意味が直ぐにでて来ません。　いわゆる慣用句に違いないし、前にも見た事のある表現ですが残念ながら辞書に頼らざるを得ません。
"I told you she was there with her two friends. I'm not even sure it was Mrs. Whatsit herself who took the sheets, though I wouldn't put it past her."
最近私は慣用句を調べる時も辞書検索エンジンのOneLookを利用しています。今回の場合で説明すると、まず "put" で検索すると　COEDを始めとして全部で５９の辞書がリストされますが、それぞれの辞書には行かずにリストの下にかかれている Phrases that include put: put away, put upon, put over, hard put, put across, more... のmore...をクリックします。　"put" を含んだ慣用句・連語のリストが出てきます、このリストは何ページにも亘りますが、最初のページの中ほどに"doesn't put it past" とか "don't put it past" が載っているので　"don't put it past" をクリックするとその "don't put it past" を掲載している辞書のリストがあり、二つの辞書がリストされていました。
クリックして実際に辞書に飛ぶとその二つの辞書はどちらもTheFreeDictionaryでしたが、次に示すように何故か記述は異なっていました。（見ているページが違うようだ）
１．not put it past someone to consider someone capable of (a particular action): I wouldn't put it past him to double-cross us
２．something that you say when you think that it is possible that someone might do something wrong or unpleasant. 'Do you really think he'd go off with another woman?' 'I wouldn't put it past him.' I wouldn't put it past Lorna to deny all knowledge of this plan. (often + to do something)
OneLookをこの様に使うのも若干煩わしいのですが、辞書を隅から隅まで読んでも探している慣用句は中々見つけられない場合が多いので、上で説明した方法だと非常に高い確率で慣用句の説明、用例が見つかるのでお薦めです。

essay

"Ben and Me" からの最後の引用です。
Then there was more singing and dancing. Sophia's eyes sparkled as she went through the graceful figures of the Minuet. I even essayed a few steps myself - with fair success.
"essayed" とありますが私は日本語にもなっているエッセイしかしらないので辞書を引きます。

語源辞典のOnline Etymology Dictionaryに次ぎの事が書いてありました。
1597, "short non-fiction literary composition" (first attested in writings of Francis Bacon, probably in imitation of Montaigne), from M.Fr. essai "trial, attempt, essay," from L.L. exagium "a weighing, weight," from L. exigere "test," from ex- "out" + agere apparently meaning here "to weigh." The suggestion is of unpolished writing. Essayist is from 1609. The more literal verb meaning "to put to proof, test the mettle of" is from 1483; this sense has mostly gone with the divergent spelling assay.
"assay" と親戚なのですね。
