"Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" の中の一文です。
They range from juvenile name-calling, like stupid, jerk, and idiot, to commands to stop, like shut up, shove it, and stuff it, all so common now they barely register.
動詞の "register" で頭に浮かぶのは「登録する」ですが、引用文の "register" は違う意味で使われているのは間違いありません。そこでOneLookでQuick Definitionsを見ると「登録する」とは異なる意味が幾つかありました。
・show in one's face (Example: "Her surprise did not register")
・enter into someone's consciousness (Example: "Did this event register in your parents' minds?")
・be aware of (Example: "Did you register any change when I pressed the button?")
引用文はこのQuick Definitionsの3番目の意味に近い使い方だと思いました。

accrue

English Journal 5月号, lecture by Ronald Kelts(journalist）の記事に懐かしい単語がありました。
At the same time the Japanese wealth that was accrued during the 1980's, and which was more commonly spent on what we think of as conspicuous consumption - nice automobile, uh, maybe a bigger home or a condo or a nicer, ur, refrigerator....
この "accrued" と言う単語は2年前までやっていた契約書のチェックの仕事でよく目にしました。仕事で読んだ契約書のコピーは家にはもちろん持って帰らないので引用する材料はありませんが、まだ持っている英文契約書の参考書（「英文契約書作成のキーポイント」中村秀雄著）に例文がありました。
Neither party shall have any liability to the other party after the termination of this Agreement, except that rights which have accrued prior to such termination shall not be affected thereby.
"accrue" を辞書で引くと（いつものようにDictionary.comを見ました）：
1. to happen or result as a natural growth, addition, etc.
2. to be added as a matter of periodic gain or advantage, as interest on money.
3. Law. to become a present and enforceable right or demand.
などの意味があります。これで分かるように金利が付くことも表すので "The interest accrues." 金融関係の方にもお馴染みな単語だと思います。

dud

The Japan Times Online May 19 の記事からです。
16,000 people evacuate as dud is disposed of in western Tokyo About 16,000 people in Chofu, western Tokyo, are evacuated while a bomb believed to have been dropped by the U.S. during World War II is removed.
"dud" の単語は知りませんでしたがこの不発弾騒動のニュースは知っていたので意味は分かりました。念のためにOneLook Quick Definitionsを見ると：n. an explosion that fails to occur, adj. failing to detonate; especially not charged with an active explosive (Example: "He stepped on a dud mine") とありましたが、someone who is unsuccessful, an event that fails badly or is totally ineffectual (Example: "The meeting was a dud as far as new business was concerned") と言うのもありました。やはり "dud" には良い意味はありませんね。縁が無いことを祈ります。

beck and call

週末に近所で木立朝鮮朝顔（Angel's Trumpet）の花が咲いているのを見かけましたし、今朝は出勤途中でアジサイ（Hydrangea）が咲き始めたのに気が付きました。会社や家にいるのはもったいない季節ですね。
さて、English Journal 5月号にあった連載対談　Talking Japan　からの抜粋です。
So part of this idea of mothers not being at the child's beck and call 24 hours a day is, I think in America, probably an attempt to instill a sense of independence in the child from a very young age: possibly too young.
"beck and call" の個所は「言いなりになる」と訳されていましたが、慣用語か何かだろうと思い辞書を引くと、"at someone's beck and call" で：(Dictionary.com）ready to do someone's bidding; subject to someone's slightest wish: He has three servants at his beck and call.
とありました。憶えておきたい表現です。

dish

"Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" の中の一文です。
"Such pop-but-not-populist words include dish (when referring to gossip), gravitas, and wordsmith."
この "dish" は明らかに皿でも食事でもないのでDictionary.com で調べると：
名詞：an item of gossip.
動詞：to gossip about: 例　They talked all night, dishing their former friends.
to defeat; frustrate; cheat.
などの意味がありましたがいづれも俗語とされていたので覚えなくても良いと思いましたが、たまたま見たテレビのCNNニュースを見ていたらアンカーが話しているニュースとは関係のないticker（画面下部の横に流れる字幕情報）に "to dish..." と "dish" が動詞で使われているのに気が付きました。字幕は直ぐに消えてしまったので何のニュースか分かりませんが、"dish" の俗語とされている意味で普通に使われるようになっているのではと思いました。 そこでWebで "dish" を使ったニュースが無いかと調べると、
CNN: The 64-year-old celebrity sleuth is accused of leading a criminal enterprise that raked in more than $2 million by illegally spying, allegedly using wiretaps and law enforcement databases, on Hollywood's rich and famous. He then dished the dirt to their rivals.
The New York Times: Two years ago, he said, several of his friends who worked in the same industry started to get restless. As they started to scout around, they also started to dish.
CNNの例は明らかにゴシップと関係ありますがThe New York Timesの例は単なる雑談のようです。
The American Heritage Dictionaryに "dish" Informal: To talk idly, especially to gossip.
とあるのでゴシップ以外でもたわいもない話に "dish" が使われるようになってきたようです。
私のブログも "just dishing" にならない様に気を付けなければ。

fiat

昨日はBizComのメンバーと久しぶりに日光戦場ヶ原に行きました。湯ノ湖湖畔に自生している石楠花や中禅寺湖から湯元に行く途中で良く目に付いたツツジ（ミツバツツジのようですが名前は分かりません。平地で見かけるツツジとは違います。）がとても綺麗でした。　ところで、昨年fiat moneyを憶えましたが、その時に "fiat" 単独の意味を調べるのを忘れていました。The Japan Times Online, May 20 の見出しにその "fiat" がありました。

そこで今回は "fiat" を辞書で引きました。

使用例は government fiat, presidential fiat, The king ruled by fiat. のように "fiat" が何によって出されたのかを示している場合が多いようです。
ついでに "fiat money" をおさらいするとWebster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary に次ぎの説明がありました。
Fiat money, irredeemable paper currency, not resting on a specie basis, but deriving its purchasing power from the declaratory fiat of the government issuing it.
去年この辞書を見ていれば "fiat" 単独の意味も分かっていたかも。

palindrome

「新聞紙」と「遠く鳴く音」の共通点が何か分かりますか？　ヒントは「竹藪焼けた」です。もう分かりますね、前から読んでも後から読んでも同じ回文です。英語で回文のことを何と言うのか "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" にありました。
Pop is also a palindrome, a word spelled the same way forward and backward, like mom, wow, or Bob (which I'll later argue is the poppest name of all).
"palindrome" の説明としてOneLook Dictionary Quick Definitionには "a word or phrase that reads the same backward as forward" とありました。
単語ではなく文章の"palindrome" 例は：

paraphernalia

昨日の続きです。 "paraphernalia" を辞書で見ると、
OneLook Quick Definitions: equipment consisting of miscellaneous articles needed for a particular operation or sport etc.
Compact Oxford Dictionary: miscellaneous articles, especially the equipment needed for a particular activity.
とあります。例文を色々探してみました。

V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary: Mike is a big sports nut and collects team paraphernalia for his favorite sports teams. (goods, collectibles)
The boy's parents were shocked to find their son's closet full of drug paraphernalia. (equipment, gear)
Wiktionary: He has an impressive collection of bicycling paraphernalia, but he doesn't ride very often anymore.

Bags of cocaine and all sorts of drug paraphernalia were seized at the airport.
"paraphernalia" は覚えておきたい単語ですね。

toast

今日取り上げる単語は "toast" で、やはり "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers"　にあった文章の中にあったものです。
POPeteers insist that such store paraphernalia are no small matter, as in these (weaponized) headlines from a catalogue for a P-O-P trade show: "Without P-O-P your brand is toast" and "News flash: 70% of all purchase decisions are made in-store."
最初の単語、"POPeteers" は明らかに "POP" + "marketeers" で著者の造語と思いますが、私が気になったのは "toast" と難しそうな単語 "paraphernalia" です。ここの "toast" は私が毎朝のように食べる "toast" ではないので辞書を見ると
Dictionary.comに"toast" の意味の最後に俗語として：
be toast, Slang. to be doomed, ruined, or in trouble: If you're late to work again, you're toast!
Slang One that is doomed, in trouble, or unworthy of further consideration.
とあった意味に使っているようです。
"paraphernalia" については明日書きます。

ricochet

今日の単語も "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" からです。
"Wisecracks still ricochet off movie sound-tracks," DiBattista writes, "but too often they are severed from their roots in actual harsh or bitter experience...."
いつものようにDictionary.comを見ました。"ricochet": to hit something and bounce away at an angle
Example: The bullet ricocheted off the wall.
"bounce/bound" と同じような意味ですが響きが良いような気がします。元はフランス語から来たようです。
