staph

便座からの感染や携帯電話から出る電磁波による人体への影響などをやたらに心配する人に対し、自分の手からの病原菌の感染や、運転中に携帯電話を扱って事故を引き起こす可能性の方がはるかに大きいと、Reader's Digest 3月号の記事、"What Worrywarts Should Really Worry About!"は教えてくれます。その記事に覚えたい単語がありました。
Most of us have read about MRSA (methicillin-resitant Staphylococcus aurerus), an infection caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to common antibiotics. Now get ready to hear about a newer family of germs called CREs (carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae).
難しい医学的な名称の病名や細菌名を覚えるつもりはありませんが、上に出てきた "staph bacteria" は一般人が知っていそうなバクテリア名なので覚えたい。
Collins Dictionaryはほとんどの単語について例文を掲載してるのでいつも最初に見ます。その辞書によると "staph" は "staphylococcus" の略語とあり、MRSA strains now cause up to 60 % of all "staph" infections in some hospitals. などの例文が出ています。
"staph"/ "staphylococcus" の説明は辞書ではなく、百科事典のWikipediaを見ます。
　 Wikipediaには次ぎの説明が冒頭にありました。（ギリシャ文字の個所は文字けするので xxx に変えています。） Staphylococcus (from the Greek: xxxx, staphylē, "grape" and xxxx, kókkos, "granule") is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria. Under the microscope, they appear round (cocci), and form in grape-like clusters.
この説明で "staph" は日本語ではブドウ球菌と呼ばれている菌と同じだと分かります。

今日採り上げるReader's Digest 3月号の記事 "Back to the drawing board" はジョークとして日曜日に紹介する方が適当なのですが、その中に前にも見たことのある様だが意味が分からなかった単語があったので今回是非覚えたいので採り上げます。
I've just finished my new time machine. Still got a few teething problems, though. So far I can only go forwards in time, and only very slowly.
"teething" を辞書で調べます。
・Collins Dictionary: the process of cutting one's baby (deciduous) teeth ⇒ Teething can be painful and make your baby irritable.
赤ちゃんの歯が生える時のことですね。辞書をよく見ると　"teething problem" の説明が次ぎのように出ていました。
・Cambridge Idioms Dictionary: problems that you experience in the early stages of an activity: There were the usual teething troubles at the start of the project, but that's to be expected.: Many marriages go through teething problems in the first few months.
・Collins Dictionary: (British) the difficulties or problems that arise during the initial stages of a project, enterprise, etc ⇒ They had terrible teething troubles with the steering on the new model. ⇒ There are bound to be teething problems in a new marriage.
日本語には産みの苦しみというのがありますね。

toasty

昨日 "pesto" を採り上げたので今日の単語も料理に関係ありそうに見えたのですが、"Toast handwarmers" と題されたReader's Digest 3月号の記事で使われている　"toasty" は食べ物と関係はなさそうです。
These delightfully odd creations from Smoko Inc plug into a USB port (Mac or PC) and warm up. Your hands slide in to get, er, toasty, but your fingers are still free to type. They sell for around $US32 plus shipping. Quirky? Yes. Necessary? Not really. Unbelievably cute? Absolutely.
辞書で "toasty" の意味を調べます。
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: pleasantly or comfortably warm: felt snug and toasty by the fire
・Cambridge English Dictionary: comfortably and pleasantly warm: My feet feel so warm and toasty in the new slippers.
なるほど、しかし食べるトーストとの関係が気になります。　 "toast" の意味もも辞書で再確認します。
・Collins Dictionary: to warm or be warmed in a similar manner ⇒ to toast one's hands by the fire
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to warm yourself or part of your body: He's just toasting his feet by the fire.
"toast" はこんな意味にも使われるのですね。

pesto

今日はReader's Digest 3月号の記事、"How to use radishes" に出てきた "pesto" を覚えたいと思います。
Halved or quartered radishes can be pan-fried. Cook in olive oil for about 6-8 minutes, until they're browned and then toss in a lemon and olive oil dressing or some pesto. Eat hot or cold.
"pesto" は多分外来語ではないでしょうか？　辞書を見ます。
・Collins Dictionary: a sauce for pasta, consisting of basil leaves, pine nuts, garlic, oil, and Parmesan cheese, all crushed together: Later, I cook spaghetti, adding a spoonful of pesto from an open jar in the fridge door.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: a green sauce used in Italian cooking, especially on pasta: Pesto is made of basil leaves, parmesan cheese, pine nuts, and olive oil, all crushed together.
イタリヤ語由来の単語ですね。美味しいイタリア料理が食べたくなりました。
そう言えば５年前に覚えた　"presto" も元々イタリア語でしたね。

ping

日付をメモするのを忘れましたが、最近のJapan Times Onlineに次ぎのタイトルの記事がありました。
Australia says new ‘pings’ best lead yet in Malaysia jet search
"pings" が ' '　で囲まれているのはここでの意味がまだ一般的ではないからだと思いますが、１０数年程前にコンピュータエンジニアの真似事をしていたので、"pings" にコンピュータ間の通信を確認する手段として使われる技術の意味もあることは分かっています。　記事を読み続ければこのタイトルでの "pings" の意味は分かる様に書かれていました。
An Australian ship searching for a missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner has picked up signals consistent with the beacons from aircraft black box recorders, in what search officials said on Monday was the most promising lead yet in the month-long hunt.

飛行機に搭載されているブラックボックスがその位置を示すために発している信号の事ですね。辞書にこの様な専門用語としての意味も載せているか確認します。
・Collins Dictionary: (computing) a system for testing whether internet systems are responding and how long in milliseconds it takes them to respond ・Wiktionary: A packet which a remote host is expected to echo, thus indicating its presence.: The network is overloaded from all the pings going out.
コンピュータ通信での "ping" の意味はたいていの辞書が載せていますが、その他の意味としては高いピッチの短い音を意味を載せています。
・Oxford English Dictionary: A short high-pitched ringing sound, as of a tap on a crystal glass: the syncopated ping of steel drums
・Wiktionary: A high-pitched, short and somewhat sharp sound: My car used to make an odd ping, but after the last oil change it went away.
私の好きなオンライン辞書 "Vocabulary.com" には今回のマレーシア航空の事故を伝える報道記事の文例を早速取り入れていました。
・Vocabulary.com: a sharp high-pitched resonant sound (as of a sonar echo or a bullet striking metal): The first involves the sensor that the Australian ship Ocean Shield is now towing on a long line to listen for flight recorder pings.
しかし、飛行機が行方不明になって１ヶ月以上経ったのでもうこの "ping" は出なくなったので見つけるのは不可能に近くなりました。

shilly-shalling/shilly-shally

March 18, 2014、Japan Times Onlineに掲載されたCombating climate changeと題された元駐日英国大使、Hugh Cortazzi氏の意見記事から引用します。
Despite some unresolved questions there is an overwhelming consensus among eminent scientists that human activity and in particular their carbon emissions have contributed to climate changes, and have resulted in increasing spells of exceptional weather. We all need to press our government to stop shilly-shalling and making excuses for inaction. Much more effective international agreements to curb emissions are needed and soon.
"shilly-shalling" が気になります。しかし、次ぎの段落の冒頭が：
Much more also needs to be done without delay to secure our cities and countryside against flooding and extreme weather.
となっているので、"shilly-shalling" はぐずぐずすることあるいは躊躇の意味ではないかと推測できます。辞書で確認します。
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to spend too much time doing something or making a decision because you do not know what is the right thing to do: Stop shilly-shallying and make a decision now!
・Oxford English Dictionary: Fail to act resolutely or decisively: ‘the government shilly-shallied about the matter’
この表現の由来を知ると覚え易くなる気がします。
・Online Etymology Dictionary: "to vacillate," 1782, from adverbial expression to stand shilly-shally (1703), earlier shill I, shall I (1700), a fanciful reduplication of shall I? (cf. wishy-washy, dilly-dally, etc.).

文化コミック

日曜日はいつもジョークを紹介しているのですが、今日はジョークの代わりに知人のイラストレータ、大葉リビさん (Libbi Oba)がインターネットに連載している日米の文化の違いをテーマにしたコミックを二つ紹介します。
一つは小学館のサイトの「不思議の国ニッポン」で、もう一つはシアトルのサイトSoy Sourceの「リビのプチカルチャーショック」です。
大葉リビさんは父親がアメリカ人、母親は日本人の米国人で現在はシアトル在住ですが、子供の頃日本に住んでいたので（私の記憶が正しければ高校まで日本の学校に通い、大学は米国の美術大学を卒業、その後日本と米国をいったりきたりしています。）英語も日本語も（日本語のワープロも使えます）自由にこなす、完璧なバイリンガルです。１０年程前に２年程職場で席が隣だったので知り合いました。Facebookを利用している方は大葉リビさんのページがあるので参照して下さい。上記に紹介したコミックはとてもユーモアがあって楽しめます。

Doraemon, the robot cat, gets your tongue

The Japan Times 2014/03/01にドラエモンの漫画が英語版になったとの記事がありました。ドラエモンの漫画は海外でも人気があると聞いた事があるので今頃英語版とは意外でしたが、英語版よりアジアやヨーロッパ向けの方が先だったようです。記事の一部を引用します。
Translating the names of Doraemon’s spectacular gadgets was another key part of the process. “Nearly every episode centers on the gadgets Doraemon pulls out to help his bumbling owner Noby make it through life,” explains Yoda.
“Many of the names are puns or plays on words and we were given a lot of freedom to brainstorm and rewrite them in whatever way would capture the essence of each gadget.”
Take-coputa, for example, became “hopter” since it lets you hop from place to place; others translated directly, such as Dokodemo doa became “Anywhere door.”
私がこの記事を読む気になったのはタイトルが "Doraemon, the robot cat, gets your tongue" となっていたからです。
これは昔映画の「第三の男」を見たときに出てきた台詞 "Cat got your tongue?" を思い出させました。
新聞や雑誌記事のタイトルは表現を工夫しているのが多いですね。

emergent properties

普段は図書館から借りている本を読んでいるのですが、本を借りるタイミングによって空きが出るので、その時に読む本としてCHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOULを買って読み始めましたが、ほんの数十ページ読んだだけで、外出先のどこかで忘れ置きし失くしてしまいました。同じ本を買うのはしゃくにさわるので今度はUnderstanding Psychology by Nicky Hayesを買って読むことにしました。心理学を勉強した事はありませんが、興味の湧く学問です。
まだ序章を読んだだけですが、覚えたい表現がありました。
Understanding everything about one level of explanation couldn't give us the whole answer, because each level of explanation is more than just the sum of the lower level. Sometimes, for instance, you hear people claiming that once we know about all the different nerve cells in the brain, then we will know all there is to know about how the brain works. But this isn't true, because there are often entirely new properties which emerge when the different parts are combined into a whole system. And these emergent properties can make all the difference.
部分が集まってシステムができた時にシステムの性質に部分の性質の集合とは別の性質が現れることがあり、"emergent properties" はその新しく生まれた性質の事を指している様です。上に引用した段落のタイトルが "emergent properties" となっているので、この言葉は一種の専門用語の様なのでEncyclopediaを見ると次ぎのような説明がありました。
・Wikipedia: An emergent behavior or emergent property can appear when a number of simple entities (agents) operate in an environment, forming more complex behaviors as a collective. If emergence happens over disparate size scales, then the reason is usually a causal relation across different scales. In other words there is often a form of top-down feedback in systems with emergent properties.
・The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: We might roughly characterize the shared meaning thus: emergent entities (properties or substances) ‘arise’ out of more fundamental entities and yet are ‘novel’ or ‘irreducible’ with respect to them. (For example, it is sometimes said that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain.)
