money becomes anyone

Seidensticker氏がAnn Arbor, Michiganに住むAileen Gattanさんに宛てた手紙文にまたしても意味が分からない個所がありました。　短い手紙文なので全文を引用します。
Honolulu, October 1992. I liked Osaka very much indeed. Being well supplied with Tokyo prejudices, I had not paid much attention to it, but in many respects it seemed a better city than Tokyo. It is concentrated, and Tokyo is scattered, and its arrangements for keeping automobiles in their place are far superior to Tokyo's. Perhaps most important, it has less money. I doubt that a great deal of money becomes anyone except just possibly the French, but it becomes the Japanese less than most people.
余りお金に縁のない私には "money becomes anyone" の個所が良く分かりません。　そこでいつものように "become" を辞書で引きました。ほとんどの辞書は私の知っている意味しか書いてありませんでしたが、最近一番利用しているDictionary.comに次ぎの説明がありました。
"to be suitable or necessary to the dignity, situation, or responsibility of: conduct that becomes an officer."
すると、 "money becomes anyone" は "money is necessary to anyone" と解釈できます。　これなら意味は分かりますが、やっぱり "I want a great deal of money." ですね。

cryptid

UFOが未確認物体の事であることは子供でも知っていますが、未確認動物を英語でなんと言うかReader's Digest 2008年１２月号の先日も一部を引用したUnbelievableの記事のお陰で知りました。
The legendary veo is said to resemble a horse-sized, prehistoric pangolin.
"pangolin" は古代の生物なので知らなくてもいいと思うのですが、"legendary veo" の "veo" は気になるので辞書を引きましたがどの辞書にも見あたりません。そこで、Wikipediaを見ると次ぎの説明がありました。The Veo(Manis Cryptus) is a cryptid described in The Beasts That Hide from Man: Seeking the World's Last Undiscovered Animals by Karl Shuker as living on the island of Rintja (Rinca) and resembling other pangolins, or scaly ant-eaters. This creature is reported to be as big as a horse. No modern Pangolin approaches that size but on the nearby islands of Java and Borneo, large pangolins of up to 8 feet did once live.
"veo" は絶滅した動物のようですが、いずれにせよ上の説明文にある "cryptid" を確認する必要が出てきましたので今度は "cryptid" を辞書で見ましたがやはりほとんどの辞書に載っていません。辞書検索OneLookで見つけたのは次ぎの二つの辞典だけです。
Wikipedia: Cryptid is a term which is used in cryptozoology to refer to a creature whose existence has been suggested but not scientifically confirmed, including purported unknown biological organisms, and extinct species claimed by cryptozoologists to be living today.
Wiktionary: Any creature that may or may not exist. Sightings of various cryptids have been reported, but their reality has not been proved.
なるほど、 "cryptid" ネス湖の怪獣のような生物の事ですね。　
"cryptozoology" となるとたいていの辞書に載っていました。
Merriam-Webster: the study of and search for animals and especially legendary animals (as Sasquatch) usually in order to evaluate the possibility of their existence
Dictionary.com: the study of evidence tending to substantiate the existence of, or the search for, creatures whose reported existence is unproved, as the Abominable Snowman or the Loch Ness monster.
"cryptid" はまだ未確認なので辞書には載っていないと言う事でしょう。

cold perfection

Reader's Digest 2008年１２月号にImcredible !ndia と題したインド観光局の宣伝がありタージマハールの写真の下に次ぎの説明文がありました。
No other monument in the world has evoked more sighs than theTaj Mahal.
Because never again will cold perfection and passionate love be seen together in such spellbinding for. See it for yourself and feel the wonder.
この "cold perfection" の解釈が気になります。　確かに、上部の丸いドームを除き、全体は直線的で白を基調とした建物であり、完璧だが冷たい印象も受けないこともありませんが、 "cold perfection" は英語でもその様な意味でしょうか？
辞書で "cold" を見てもやはり日本語の感覚とだいたい同じで "used of physical coldness; having a low or inadequate temperature or feeling a sensation of coldness or having been made cold by e.g. ice or refrigeration ("A cold climate"); extended meanings; especially of psychological coldness; without human warmth or emotion ("A cold unfriendly nod")" などなどで余り良い意味での使用法は見つかりません。唯一つ毛色の違った意味であったのは：
Dictionary.com:　Art. a. having cool colors, esp. muted tones tending toward grayish blue. b. being a cool color. 位なものでした。
次に "cold perfection" をGoogleで検索してみました。
The Moscow Times と言うサイトにモスクワにあるYokoと言う日本料理店の紹介記事に "cold perfection" のサブタイトルが付いていて、記事の中に "The restaurant is a model of sushi bar minimalism, a cold space that feels like sitting in an architect’s computer-generated design. Sharp angles and rigid lines softened by light wood tables and pillowed chairs; grey stone walls and slate floors offset by green potted palms; everything looks flawless in an uncanny, impersonal way."
とありました。すしや刺身なら "cold perfection" もあっている気もしますが、鍋料理は出しにくいですね。
次に目にしたのは "cold perfection" と題したレオナルドダビンチ展に関する記事です。
The interesting thing about Leonardo's drawings is the coldness apparent in them. This is fitting for an anatomical study, but is disconcerting in a portrait. There is a lack of emotion in perfection, and Leonardo seems to have been after perfect beauty and perfect ugliness.
美的感覚としては "cold perfection" も褒め言葉なんでしょうね。ついでですが、ミュージックグループのGiardini di Miroが "cold perfection" と言う曲を出しているのも知りましたが、曲を聴いてみないと何とも言いようがないです。

St.Patrick's cabbage

日曜日に竹橋にある東京国立近代美術館に行ったついでに梅の花を見るために皇居東御苑に立ち寄りました。梅の花を見るにはちょっと遅かったようで盛りは過ぎていました。しかし園内に遠くからも非常に目立つ桃色の花の大きな木が見えたので河津桜かと思い近づくと河津桜ではなくツバキヒカンザクラと書かれていました。花には人が大勢集まっていましたが人だけではなくメジロやウグイスなど何種類もの鳥が来て花を食べていました。デジカメを持ってこなかったので携帯のカメラでそのツバキヒカンザクラやミツマタなどこの季節でも目立つ花を写真を取ったつもりだったのですが、写真ではなくムービーのモードになっていたので残念ながらブログで紹介できるようなできではありませんでした。
さて、Seidensticker氏がAnn Arbor, Michiganに住むAileen Gattanさんに宛てた手紙で、若干長いのですが "one of Seidensticker's vignettes on the natural world" の例として全文を引用します。
Tokyo, April 1982. It is the time of the year when I spend pleasant Sabbath afternoons out viewing flora. Today is the Sabbath, and it promises to be a pleasant afternoon, and so I will first go and view some famous peonies and then, if there is time, go and view some famous azaleas. I almost hope that there is not time. I view azaleas from a sense of duty, but do not really like them. Next week should be the time for my favorite among them all, the wistaria. The wistaria that occupies a corner of my balcony not yet taken over by St.Patrick's cabbage was going to bloom this year for the first time, but I had painters, and they knocked all the buds off. The Japanese are such nature lovers.
以前水芭蕉の事を英語で "skunk cabbage" と言うことを知ったことを書きましたが、Seidensticker氏の手紙にある "St.Patrick's cabbage" とはどんな植物興味があります。
ジーニアス英和大辞典によると「ヒカゲユキノシタ」とありました。　Googleで "St.Patrick's cabbage" + pictureで検索すると最初にあったのが上に示す写真です（学名　Saxifraga spathularis）。　たしかに花はユキノシタの様ですね。
手紙の最後の文はSeidensticker氏の皮肉でしょう。

coelacanth

Reader's Digest 2008年１２月号のUnbelievableと題された記事に次ぎの文がありました。
The 50-kilogram corpse was sent to experts who confirmed it was an unknown type of coelacanth, a creature once though extinct since the Cretaceous era (defined as "before the Rolling Stones' first tour").
"coelacanth" は日本語で言うシーラカンスの事だと思うが、シーラカンスを英語で聴いた事もないし、文字も見たことはないので "coelacanth" の発音を確かめるためにMerriam-Webster でチェックすると、英語でもほぼシーラカンスと発音されていました。Merriam-Websterでのシーラカンスの説明は "any of an order (Coelacanthiformes) of lobe-finned fishes known chiefly from Paleozoic and Mesozoic fossils" となっていました。
ところでRDの記事の "the Cretaceous era (defined as "before the Rolling Stones' first tour")." と言う冗談のようなカッコ内のコメントの意味が分かりません。
"the Cretaceous era"（白亜紀）はWikipediaによると、
The Cretaceous, usually abbreviated K for its German translation Kreide, is a geologic period and system from circa 145.5 ± 4 to 65.5 ± 0.3 million years ago. In the geologic timescale, the Cretaceous follows on the Jurassic period and is followed by the Paleogene period.
とあり、ジュラシック紀の次ぎの時代で、ローリングストーンズが古いとは言ってもやはりWikipediaで調べても最初のツアーは：
The band embarked on their first UK tour in July 1963 and played their first gig outside of Greater London on Saturday 13 July at the Outlook Club in Middlesbrough for which they were paid ￡40; they shared the billing that night with The Hollies.
と比較になりません。このジョークの心が分かりません。

a gammy leg

１７日に丸の内カフェで開かれたESUJのEnglish Clubに参加した際にESUJ理事のSusanさんにサイデンステッカー氏の手紙文コピーを渡し “a game arm” について訊きました。彼女は直ぐには分かりませんでしたが、翌日次のメールが彼女から届きました。
“A game arm”: I did not know that expression, but I have heard my (English) husband and his father use the expression “a gammy leg”. I did not know the spelling. I had to look that up as it was pronounced a “gamey” (like game, not gam) leg, as I recalled. But ‘gams’ is slang for ‘legs’ you may be surprised to know. It usually refers to well-shaped women’s legs, eg, “Nice gams!” (a boy might say to a girl he wanted to talk to).
Anyway, a “gammy” leg is a “bad” leg, one that may need surgery to repair something and causes you to use a cane or walk with a slight limp.
そうですか、イギリス英語で “a gammy leg” なる表現があるのですね。　早速辞書で確認します。
イギリス英語なので英国の辞書を引きました。
・Compact Oxford English Dictionary: gammy: Brit. informal (especially of a leg) unable to function normally because of injury or chronic pain.
ORIGIN dialect form of game: (of a person’s leg) lame.
・Cambridge International Dictionary of English: gammy leg or other body part is damaged or does not work correctly: Ex. I've got a gammy knee.
ふむふむ、もしかすると米語では "gammy leg" を "game leg" と言うのではと推測し、いつも使う米国系の辞書を見直すと、ありました。
The American Heritage Dictionary: game: Crippled; lame: a game leg.
Dictionary.com: lame: a game leg.
なるほど、サイデンステッカー氏は腕が不自由だったのですね。
ところで "weather arm" の方は推測通りでした。 Susanさんのメールに、"As for “Weather arm”, I think that is an expression that is made up but it must mean that Seidensticker’s arm hurt when it rained, or some such."　とありました。

phony

Seidensticker氏が東京をこよなく愛していたのは、晩年はハワイに住んでいたにも関わらず生前に自分の墓地として東京の下町を選んでいたことからも分かります（Ref.inter http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/140558 ）が、次に引用する手紙でも明らかです。
Honolulu, February 2004. I come to think more and more strongly that when the time comes to choose a final abode it will be Tokyo. That is the place upon the planet where I feel most at home. Certainly I have no thought of going back to Colorado, and Honolulu comes to seem phonier and phonier the longer I live here. Tokyo has many idiosyncrasies, but phoniness is not among them.

東京生まれの東京育ちですが　"Tokyo has many idiosyncrasies" と言われても肯定するしかありませんが、"Honolulu comes to seem phonier and phonier the longer I live here" の件はハワイの人が怒りそうですが、ハワイの人はそんな事は気にしないのでしょうね。

最近リーダーズダイジェストに余り面白いジョークが載っていませんが、２００８年１１月号からまあまあの作品を紹介します。
A friend offered me a new 50-inch, HD-ready television the other day for only $300. It was in perfect working order apart from the broken volume control.

makings of a game arm

"The Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan"のSeidensticker追悼特集からです。（Ann Arbor, Michiganに住むAileen GattanさんのSeidensticker氏を偲ぶ文にはSeidensticker氏が彼女宛に出した手紙を幾つも紹介してありましたがどれも興味を引く内容ですがその中から特に私が単語・表現に興味をもった手紙を幾つか引用します。
Tokyo, August 1977. I think I may have the makings of a game arm, and that is nice - or do we call it a weather arm. Last night it rained, bringing a sort of end to a horrid heat wave, and the elbow hurt and hurt, making me feel very traditional.
"making of" は慣用句ですね。
Dictionary.com:　Usually, makings. capacity or potential: He has the makings of a first-rate officer.
The American HeritageR Dictionary of the English Language: The abilities or qualities needed for development. Often used in the plural: She has the makings of a fine teacher.
問題はその後にある "game arm" と "weather arm" です。
"weather arm" は天候によって腕が痛みを感じる事を意味しているのでその様に表現していると推測しておりますが確信はありません。 "game arm" の方は更に分かりません。　どなたか分かりますか？

roll out

メモするのを忘れましたがThe Nikkei Weeklyの１月１２日あるいは１９日の週のNew Productsの面にHi-fi CDに関する記事があり、その中に先日も話題にした "roll"( http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/139013) の単語がありました。
On Dec.24, the company rolled out 60 Blue-spec titles.
Blue-spec と言うのはSony Music Entertainment が採用したHi-fi CDのFormatで、上の引用文の "rolled out" は文脈からして、「発売を開始した」との意味と思いますが辞書を引きます。
OneLook Quick Definitions:　begin operating or running ("The cameras were rolling"); flatten or spread with a roller ("Roll out the paper")
Dictionary.com:　Informal. to begin to move or operate; start; commence: Let's roll at sunrise.
何だかしっくりしないので更にしつこく他の辞書を見るとピッタリの説明がありました。
