典型的な駄洒落ですね。 英語だと駄洒落に気が付かない事もあるのですが、これは直ぐに "make ends meet" の洒落だと分かりました。
O. Henryの短編 The Sphinx Apple は幌馬車の一行が悪天候のために旅の途中で泊まった家で見つけたリンゴを賞品として誰の創作話が一番良かったかと言う話です。 題名にスフィンクスが含まれているのは旅人に謎をかけたという神話からつけたようです。 Dictionary.comの "sphinx" の説明を引用します。
Sphinx: Classical Mythology. a monster, usually represented as having the head and breast of a woman, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle. Seated on a rock outside of Thebes, she proposed a riddle to travelers, killing them when they answered incorrectly, as all did before Oedipus. When he answered her riddle correctly the Sphinx killed herself.
今日覚えたいと思った単語はその The Sphinx Apple にあった次の文にあります。

長くなるのでここでは引用しませんがこの文がでてくる前の文でこの "unrequited affection" は実らぬ恋、あるいは片思いのような意味と推測できますが、 "unrequited" を辞書で見ます。

The Japan Times Online Jan.6のヘッドライン "Blizzard and all trimmings forecast" の "trimmings" が何の事だか気になります。 新聞記事の場合タイトルの意味が分からない時は記事を読むと分かる場合が多いので記事に進みます。
Snowstorms were feared in wide areas from western to northern Japan on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Meteorological Agency said, issuing a caution for strong winds, heavy snow, tidal surges and avalanches.
タイトルの "trimmings" は "strong winds, heavy snow, tidal surges and avalanches" を示していると思いますが、 "trimmings" 自体にその様な意味があるのか辞書を見ます。

宗教心の全く無い私はこの高校生の答えに納得したくなります。 "cleavage" と "cleave" （"separate or cut with a tool, such as a sharp instrument; "Cleave the bone".)の意味は知っていますが、ここでの "cleave to" はその様な意味ではなく、文脈からして（またcling/stick/adhere toを連想させるので） "to be faithful" の様な意味だと推測できますが辞書で確認します。
