のキャプションがありました。この "lay of the land" の表現が分からないので記事の全体を読むためにWebのThe Japan Times, ONLINEを見ると、

The government said Monday it will require taxi drivers in major cities to take special courses on customer service, safety training and geography exams to improve their performance.

The decision by the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry follows criticism that some cabbies do not know their areas of operations well and do not provide good service, according to ministry officials.

とありましたので  "lay of the land" は地理を意味している事が分かります。　念の為に辞書で "lay" を辞書で確かめると、名詞で「位置、方向、地形、知性、状態」の意味があり、"lay of the land" は成句であることも分かりました。 

Schadenfreude

今週の火曜日に開かれた2月のESUJ English Club (http://www.esuj.gr.jp/english_club/jp/index.htm) で
ロシアから来日し東京大学にて言語学を研究されているタチアナ スニトコさんの
"Surpassing languages and cultures: a way to understanding" と題した話を聴きましたが、その中で日本人の「思いやり」に対して西洋の "Schadenfreude" の気持ちという一節がありました。　この "Schadenfreude" は他人の不幸を喜ぶ気持ちを意味している言葉です。米国人のスーザンさん（ESUJ常務理事）が、この言葉を彼女も数年前に初めて耳にしたのですが、最近はよく見聞きするので覚えておくと良いですと仰っていました。

実は私もこの１週間程の間にこの言葉を２度目にしました。まずアルク社のEnglish Journal　２月号のBen Affleckとのインタビュー記事にAffleckが "Superman crashes car. Faints at sigh of own blood. Man of steel, blah, blah, blah" - a  kind of wry, sort of, schadenfreude, slightly smug, detached putting down of people who are supposed to be elevated." その次はメルマガのArcaMaxの配信で： Today's Word "schadenfreude" (noun) - A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others. "Schadenfreude" はドイツ語から来ており Schaden は "damage"、Freude は "joy" を意味し、ドイツ語のように語頭を大文字で始める場合が多い、と説明がありました。

スニトコさんの話に戻りますが、最近の日本人には "Schadenfreude" が多いとは言いませんが、道路上のペットボトル等のゴミ、混雑している公共場所での喫煙、自転車の無灯火運転等々、他人に対する「思いやり」は残念ながら減っていると感じるのは私だけでしょうか。

Lemming

マーケティングの記事を読んでいたら "TWELVE STEPS TO AVOID BEING A MARKETING LEMMING" の表題がありました。　"lemming" は辞書によるとタビネズミ（極地付近にすむ小動物で、海へ向かって集団自殺行進をするといわれるとありました。　中々興味のある話なのでインターネットで更に調べると、集団自殺行進をするというのは１９５８年にデズニィーが作成したドキュメンタリで "lemming" が崖から飛び降り集団自殺するのを見せたことから一般に知られるようになったとありましたが、これが何とデズニィーのやらせドキュメンタリであったようです。

Disney's White Wilderness was filmed in Alberta, Canada, which is not a native habitat for lemmings and has no outlet to the sea. Lemmings were imported for use in the film, purchased from Inuit children by the filmmakers. The Arctic rodents were placed on a snow-covered turntable and filmed from various angles to produce a "migration" sequence; afterwards, the helpless creatures were transported to a cliff overlooking a river and herded into the water.

やらせは日本のＴＶ会社の専売特許ではないようです。
ところでマーケティングに戻りますが、詳細は略して "TWELVE STEPS TO AVOID BEING A MARKETING LEMMING" を参考に示します。

1) Find a method that works for you and stick with it.

2) Don't gather data that inevitably contradicts. I

3) Remember that the market satisfies need, not greed.

4) Don't demand consistently high returns.

5) Beware of your success threshold.

6) Make your own final decisions.

7) Isolate emotion from order time.

8) Don't argue your position with friends.

9) Avoid highly leveraged positions.

10) Remember that your current market position is never perfect.

11) It doesn't matter why, it matters which way.

12) Make marketing a habit.

in the heat of the moment

ある文章の中に "in the heat of the moment" とありました。 Googleで調べたら www.goenglish.com/InTheHeatOfTheMoment.asp　に次のような分かり易い説明がありました。

The "heat of the moment" describes the immediacy and aliveness of being very involved in something. To be "in the heat of the moment" is to be in the midst of some activity and under the influence of that event. Example: "You never really know for sure what you will do in the heat of the moment." In the heat of the moment we sometimes do or say things which we regret later."He was so frustrated that in the heat of the moment he quit his job." Sometimes people are "lost" in the heat of the moment, which usually means that they lose some aspect of self-control. "He was lost in the heat of the moment and tried to punch the police officer."

つまり、"in the heat of the moment" は「ついかっとなって」に当たる表現ですね。
