さて本題です。 リーダーズダイジェスト２００８年１１月のWord Power（単語クイズのコラムです）は "x" を含む単語の特集で、いつもの事ながら大半の単語は知らない単語ばかりでした。１３問中知っている単語は５しかなかったのですがその知っている中に入っている単語の "faux" の説明文（faux: fake or artificeal. Maxine sports fake eyelashes, false teeth, and faux pearls. ）中の単語 "sport" の意味が良く分かりませんでした。 以前にも "sport" に日本語にもなっているスポーツの意味とは異なる意味を持っている例があり取り上げましたが(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/131169)、その意味とも違います。 そこで再び辞書です。

良く知っている単語でも色々知らない意味・用法があるんですね。
ところで私は "faux" は "faux pas"(a socially awkward or tactless act) の表現で知ったのですが、 "x" は発音しない（"faux pas"の方は "pas" の "s"も発音しません）ことに注意が必要です。
昨日からの雨でジョッギンをする予定が狂いました。明日浦安のハーフマラソンに参加する予定なのですが、昨年１１月の江東区シーサイドマラソン以来結局ほとんど走っていないのでちょっとでも走った方が良いかなと思っていたのですが雨の中を走るほどの元気はないのでジョッギングは止めました。結局今日も室内でできる卓球の練習を友達とすることにしました。
ＢＢＣ調査による "best worst examples of office jargon".の例は５０あり、一応全部目を通したところoffice jargonではありませんが気になった単語がありました。４４番目の例の冒頭を引用します。

先日 "reeling" (http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/138840)で引っかかりましたが、こんどは "rolling" です。 "rolling" とくれば "Rolling Stones" が思い浮かびますがそれは別としても私の知っている "roll" には上の文の意味に合いそうなもはありません。 そこで辞書です。Dictionary.comを見ると "roll" には６９も意味がありました。 その３７番目に "Printing. to apply (ink) with a roller or series of rollers" と言うのがありました。 "Is she rich?" の "she" は "The Grand High Witch"、魔女の大親分の事ですが、なるほどお札を印刷できるのですね。 上の引用文の後にこんな文があります。

ちょっと前に "Clerihew " と言う詩の形式を紹介しましたが、それと似た "limerick" と言う形式の詩もあることを知りました。 以下はWikipediaによる "limerick" の説明です。

先日カナダ大使館で皇太子殿下による "Water Transportation in Edo" と題した講演を聴く機会がありました。若い頃から特別な教育、訓練を受け、Oxford大学への留学経験、外国の要人との面談等、経験豊富なだけあってさすがに英語の発音もきれいで、非常に聴き易いスピーチでした。 その日のレクチャーで知った英単語を紹介します。 それは "pound lock" と言うもので、恐らく普通の日本人は知らない英語表現と思いますが、レクチャーでは映像も使用されており "pound lock" が何かと言う疑問にはならず、あれを英語で "pound lock" と言うのかと感心したのですが、考えて見れば、 "pound lock" が何か分かった後でも、それを日本語で何と言うのか知りません。 家に帰って辞書で "pound lock" を探しましたが、OneLook検索で引っかかったのはWikipediaだけでした。 ではWikipediaの説明を引用します。
