Reader's Digest ２月号(2009年)にRick Warren司祭によるオバマ大統領候補とのインタビュー抜粋記事にもう一つ疑問な点がありました。 オバマ氏が妊娠中絶問題に関する質問に答えて次ぎの発言をした個所です。
"I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is above my pay grade."
"pay grade" なる表現は初めて見ます。 素直に考えると給料の等級、つまり収入の程度と言うことだと思いますが、質問は "At what point does a baby get human rights in your view?" であり、オバマ氏が「自分の収入レベルでは具体的には答えることはできない」との意味で答えたとすると、「えっ？」と首を傾げざるを得ません。 そこで辞書で "pay grade" を確認します。
Random House Unabridged Dictionary: the grade of a member of the armed services established according to a scale of increasing amounts of base pay and related to but not identical with official rank.
"pay grade" は普通軍人の給与体系で使われるようだ。 オバマ大統領が軍人だった事は聞いていないので上院議員（インタビュー時）としての給与を指しているとすると、質問に対する応答としては理解に苦しむ。

英単語を見てその意味を知っている単語でも、日本語からそれに対応する英単語が出てこないのは、漢字が読めてもその漢字を書こうとすると書けないことと良く似ていると思いますが、最近そのどちらのケースも多くなっている気がします。 漢字が書けなくなっているのは文章をパソコンでしか書かないからだと思っていますが、英語の場合は日常で英語を使うことはほとんどないのでしかたないですね。 職探しで、なるべくなら英語が使える仕事をと思っていますが中々自分に都合の良い仕事はありません。 明日面接予定の仕事も残念ならが英語には無関係です。

この "<B>the least of my brothers</B>" の意味ですが "your youngest brother" と同じと解しているのですがあっているでしょうか？ 日本人の英語だと "the least of" と言う表現はまず出てこないので確信がありません。

Merriam-Websterでは "push comes to shove"の項に: a decisive moment comes when push came to shove とあり、
Wiktionaryには "when push comes to shove"の項に: (idiomatic) When the pressure is on; when the situation is critical or urgent; when the time has come for action, even if it is difficult.と説明があり、例文: He's not an extremely talented builder, but when push comes to shove, he can usually get the job done.がありました。
最後にDictionary.comを見ると、when or if push comes to shoveの項に次ぎの説明がありました。: when or if matters are ultimately confronted or resolved; when or if a problem must be faced; in a crucial situation: If push comes to shove, the government will impose quotas on imports

Reader's Digest １月号(2009年)の片隅に "SO WHAT'S FOR DINNER?" と題された記事にあった文です。
You end up eating bread from a bag, and dipping it in anything runnier than bread.
この "runnier" の意味がピンと来ません、辞書を引いたらなあんだと言う知っている単語でしたが。
"runnier" で検索すると "runny" の項目が表示されました。
Dictionary.com: 1. tending to run or drip: a runny paste. 2. (of the nose) discharging mucus.
OneLook Quick Definitions: characteristic of a fluid; capable of flowing and easily changing shape
バター、ジャムあるいはスプレッドなどをパンに付けて食べると言う事ですね。しかし "runny" は "runny nose"
を連想すると美味しさはなくなりますね。
All I had to do was to press my front paws on to a tiny wooden platform and hey presto, a spring would stretch and a weight would drop and the door would swing open.
"hey presto" はなんか唐突で英語ではないような響きの表現ですね。早速辞書を引きます。
Compact Oxford English Dictionaryでは "presto" の項に次ぎの説明がありました。

ORIGIN Italian, ‘quick, quickly’.やはり外来語だったのですね。

イギリス英語のようですね。マッジクで「あーら不思議！」と言う感じでしょうか。マジックと言えば "hocus-pocus" と言うまじない言葉があるのを思い出しました。 これもついでに辞書を見ると、"A phrase used as a magical incantation to bring about some change." とWiktionaryに書いてあります。
After a day of accidents and mistakes, my coworker had had it.
"Why," she cried out in exasperation, "do things that happen to stupid people keep happening to me?!"
このいかにも口語的な表現 "had had it" の意味が分からないので辞書で調べます。OneLook Dictionary Searchで "had it" を検索したらTheFreeDictionaryに "have had it" の項があり、 Informalとして次の三つの意味がでていました。
1. To have endured all that one can: I've had it with their delays.
2. To be in a state beyond remedy, repair, or salvage: That coat has had it.
3. To have done everything that is possible or that will be permitted.
記事では1の意味で使われているように思えます。
またTheFreeDictionaryには "have it" の項もあり、そこには：
1. To assert; maintain: Rumor has it that he quit.
2. To express in a particular way; phrase: As her friends have it, she likes her new job.
3. To think and act with respect to (something being considered): Have it your way.
4. To gain a victory in a voice vote: The ayes have it.
とありました。こう言うありふれた単語を使った口語的な表現は、即座にどの意味で使っているのかを知るのは難しいですね。
"Here we go again!"(また始まったよ！)と言われそうですが鼻の話が続きます。 児童の読み物 "The Witches" にあった文です。
I'll have my lawyers on to her for this! I'll make her pay through the nose!"
"pay through the nose" は明らかに慣用句でしかも以前覚えたはずですが意味を忘れています。
Dictionary.com: to pay an excessive price: They patronize small and exclusive shops where they cheerfully pay through the nose.
そうでした、以前読んだイデオムのテキストに意味は "pay too high a price" とありました。 そのテキストにあった例文も次に引用します。
At last Mr. Smith came upon the rare stamp he had been seeking at an auction. Since many other stamp collectors would also be bidding for it, he realized that he would have to pay through the nose in order to have it. After considering the increasing value of the stamp, he decided that he would not mind paying such a high price for something so rare.
確かに、オークションで美術品、骨董品などを購入する場合には "You have to pay through the nose." でしょうね。
