"that's all there is to it" の意味は「それだけの事だ」と容易に推測できますが、このような慣用句を辞書で調べるのは結構苦労します。　いつも利用している辞書検索OneLookでも引っかかるのは以前話題にした"all there" だけですが、Google で検索すると "that's all there is to it" の使用例は山ほどあり、英和辞典（朝日出版・英和イディオム完全対訳辞典の宣伝）と英・トルコ辞典での説明例を見つけることはできたのですが 、英英辞書、もしくは慣用句辞典（英語の）での掲載はどうしても見つかりません。　英語での説明をやっと見つけましたが、質問に答えるブログ形式のサイトでした。
Can it stand for 1: "It's as simple as that", "there's nothing (more) to it, and 2: "and that's all she wrote" (i.e. all there is to be said, reported, etc)
半年程前に購入したのですが滅多に使用しないE-DIC（英和）が英和イディオム完全対訳辞典と同じ出版社の辞書だと気が付いたので見てみると "that's all there is to it" の項目はちゃんとありました。
余り利用していないのにこんな事を言うのもなんですが、朝日出版のE-DICは慣用句の検索が容易で、また新語等の追加サービス（オンラインで無料）があるのでお薦めできる辞書です。
"Murder in the Mews" を読み終えたのですが、ポアロがベルギー人なのでやたらとフランス語がでてくるのに閉口しました。　もちろんフランス語の個所は無視しましたが、普通の英米人はポアロがポロッと言うフランス語は分かるのでしょうか？　それが一番気になりました。

carafe/flared lip

"carafe" はワインを入れている一種のガラス瓶だと言う事は知っていますが、アラビア語由来の言葉とは知りませんでした。 興味を覚えたのは "carafe" を説明しているリーダーズダイジェストの次ぎの文です。
"carafe": bottle with a flared lip.
ボトルにリップがあるなんて、と一瞬思いましたが、日本語でもヤカンや急須の注ぎ口と言いますね。
"carafe" を辞書ではどう説明しているか一応チェックします。
Dictionary.com: a wide-mouthed glass or metal bottle with a lip or spout, for holding and serving beverages.
注ぎ口に当たる英語は "lip" あるいは "spout" なのですね。

arm in a sling

今日のジョークは私は余り笑えなかった（つまり意味が分からなかった？）のですが、まず読んで下さい。
A defendant appeared before me in the magistrates' court, charged with stealing two washing machines. He was covered in bruises and had one arm in a sling.
"My client wished to apologise for his appearance," explained the defence solicitor, "but he fell off the back of a lorry."
謝ったことが洗濯機を盗んだことではなく、怪我をしてみっともない姿だったのがジョークになったと解釈していますが、この解釈には自信がありません。何か他の解釈はあるのでしょうか？私としては面白いジョークとは思えなかったのですがこのジョークを取り上げたのは "arm in a sling" の表現を覚えたかったからです。
"sling" を辞書で引きます。

powwow

ベランダでゴーヤの栽培を始めました。　花が咲き、小さくて（まだ３cm位）可愛らしい実がなりました。マンションなので風が強く大きくなるまで育つか心配です。
さて、June 7のThe Japan Times Onlineのキャプションです。
U.S., Japan, China plan trilateral powwow Senior officials from Japan, China and the United States are preparing to hold their first trilateral policy dialogue in July to discuss issues of common interest.
"powwow" は英語らしくない語感ですね。　意味は後半に "trilateral policy dialogue" が "trilateral powwow" に対応しているので "powwow" は "meeting/conference" と同じような意味だと思いますが辞書で確認します。

mufti/meter maid

アラビア語由来の英単語 "mufti" は "civilian dress" の意味だそうですが、 "mufti" には興味を覚えないのですが、 "mufti"　を使った例文　"No-one recognised the meter maid in mufti, and she was grateful."
の中の "meter maid" が気になります。 "meter maid" を辞書で引きます。

"meter man" とか "meter person" は辞書には見あたらなかったので "meter maid" は恐らく p.c. (politically correct) が普及する前の時代の言葉でしょうね。

"payola " の意味を知らないので何の事か分かりませんが、新聞は記事を読むと普通はたいていの場合意味が分かるようになっているので、本文を読んでみます。
Dokkyo Medical University on Friday joined the ranks of universities found to have professors who review doctoral theses receiving money from degree earners.
博士号をお金で買っている話のようですね。　すると "payola" は "bribery" と同じようですがどうでしょうか？　辞書を引きます。

なるほど、意味は "bribery" と同じですが、昇進とか記事のような場合に主に使われるのですね。　語源もディスクジョッキーに特定のレコードをかけてもらうための"bribery"/ "graft" を示す業界用語というのも面白いですね。

loofah

リーダーズダイジェスト5月号のWord Powerはアラビア語由来の英単語の特集で、その中に興味のある幾つかの単語がありました。
"loofah"　の意味は次ぎのどれでしょうか？
A. sponge from a gourd.
B. water pipe for smoking
C. slipper with curled toe
答えはAの "sponge from a gourd" でつまりヘチマですね。　ヘチマが外国でも使われているとは思っていませんでした。
例文： Her shower caddy is crowded with botanical shampoos and loofahs in all sizes.

hazing

The Japan Times Online, May 30のキャプションからです。
Former stable master gets six years for young wrestler's hazing death
"stable master" で例の相撲部屋の親方の話題だと直ぐに分かります。　すると　"hazing" はシゴキに相当するのかなと見当を付けますが動詞の "hazing" を辞書で確かめます。（相撲部屋を "stable" と言うのも興味がありますが、この単語は大分前に覚えたものなので今回は話題にしません。）

bad news and good news

英語ジョークの典型の一つ "bad news and good news" スタイルのジョークを一つ。
The doctor had finished his examination and with a smile on his face said, "Mrs. Anderson, I have some very good news for you."
"Miss Anderson," she corrected.
The doctor said, "Miss Anderson, I have some very bad news for you!"
見方考え方によって何でも "bad news and good news" になると言う事でしょう。 中国の故事塞翁が馬を思い起こします。

bric-a-brac

リーダーズダイジェスト5月号にあった、ストレスを発散できる場所を提供する新ビジネスの紹介記事の一文です。
With blaring music and pulsating neon lights, customers can relieve stress by launching dinnerware and bric-a-brac against a wall of dented steel.
なるほど、皿や "bric-a-brac" を壁に投げつけてストレスを発散させようと言うのですね。　でも "bric-a-brac" が分からないとストレスは増えます。　そこで辞書を見ます。
