"umpteenth" と言う面白い言葉に会いました。　状況は「22歳の息子がメカに弱い母親にサテライトディッシュ用のリモコンの使用法を教えたが、母親は中々理解できず使い方が習得できない。」、そこで息子は：

After repeating the instructions for the umpteenth time, he sighed, "This would be a lot easier if you were 12."

これは我が家でも全く同じ状況です。 "umpteenth" をLongmanで見ると：

A word used when you do not know the specific number of something in a series, but you want to emphasize that the number is very large.

とありました。 「何度も」を強調したい時に使うのですね。

May through December relationship

数ヶ月前に読んだ記事に（多分アジア版のリーダーズダイジェスト）“May through December relationship”と言う表現がありました。意味はその表現に続く文で説明があったので直ぐに分かったのですが、この表現を実際に使った文を記録して置かなかったので、Google で例文を探そうとしたところ、
“May through December relationship”はもちろん
“May through December relation”
“May thru December relationship”
“May thru December relation”

のいずれもGoogle の検索で珍しく何も引っ掛からず、やっと
“May-December relation” で次の例文が1件のみ検索結果にありました。

万能辞書の OneLook でも調べたが中々見つかりません。でも OneLook の結果の最後の方に：

とあるのを見つけ、more に行くと、

May-December romance(romances) と言う表現があるのが分かった。

その先はWikipedia で、標題が ”Age disparity in sexual relationship”  となっている項でそこに次のような ”May-December romance” の説明がありました。

”May-December romance is a general and non-prejudicial expression for an age-disparate relationship. The expression draws an implicit analogy between one’s lifetime and the time of year. Thus “May” refers to the younger partner, who is in the spring of his or her life. “December” is the elder partner, in the winter of his or her life.”

この説明は私の記憶している意味、「親子程年の離れている男女の関係」とおおよそ一致しています。　念のために、今度は ”May-December romance” をGoogleで検索すると、１２５，０００件もの結果がでました。　と言うことは、”May-December romance”の意味が分かる人は “May through December relationship”あるいは “May-December relation”と出てきても何を示しているかは直ぐに分かりますね。

quartered

次に示すJapan Times Jun 25, 2006　の見出しを読んで下さい。

Who needs a trial when the media has hanged, drawn and quartered the accused?

この英語で "quartered" は日本語では八つ裂きと言うところですね。

gardenia

先日ののジョッギングの時にあちこちでクチナシが咲いているのに気がつきました。
クチナシを英語で何て言うか昨年調べたはずですが忘れてしまいましたので調べ直しました。
クチナシの英名は “gardenia” でガーデンと言う人名から命名されたことも分かりました。 named for naturalist Dr. Alexander Garden (1730-91)
和英、英和辞典ではクチナシ= “gardenia” しか分かりませんので英英辞書で “gardenia” を引くと：

１) Cambridge Dictionary of American English
a plant with large white or yellow flowers that have a sweet smell

２) OneLook’s Quick Definition
any of various shrubs and small trees of the genus Gardenia having large fragrant white or yellow flowers

３) The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition.  2000.
Any of various shrubs and trees of the Old World tropics that belong to the genus Gardenia, especially G. jasminoides native to China, having glossy evergreen leaves and large, fragrant, usually white flowers.

の説明があり、小さな木で、光沢のある葉と白または黄色の甘い、強い香りの花をつけることが分かります。　香り (fragrant) に “large” の形容詞がつくのが以外ですね。

World Cup spirit runneth over

Japan Times June 17, 2006の見出し　"World Cup spirit runneth over" の"runneth" は知らない単語なので辞書で調べたがどの辞書にも載っていない。それもそのはずで"runneth" は "runs" の古語で、Bibleにある "My cup runneth over. (runs over)"（ 幸福が身に余る）を下敷きにした表現だという事が分かりました。

つまり、Japan Timesの見出しは、ワールドカップで幸せな気持ちになっているファンが世の中に溢れている事を示していることが分かります。日本のスポーツ新聞もそうですが、新聞の見出しは洒落ている表現（駄洒落？）が多いのが特徴ですね。

せっかく調べたのでBibleの記述個所(Psalm Chapter 23)を次に紹介します。
Psalm Chapter 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

ところで、 "Her cups runneth over." となると、同じく聖書の表現を下敷きにしているのは確かですが聖書の意味とは大いに変わってきます。　この "cups" は女性のカップのことで、つまり、「彼女の胸はあふれるほど大きい／彼女は巨乳だ」となります。

この表現は最初は1989年に放映された "Married... with Children" と言うsitcom（ホームコメディ）の6番目のエピソードのタイトルから来たそうです。　以下にインターネットに掲載されていたそのいわれを示します。

Her Cups Runneth Over is the 6th episode of season three of the television sitcom Married... with Children. 　First Aired: Sunday January 15, 1989 on FOX.

Synopsis: To cheer up Peggy on her birthday, Al and Steve travel to Wisconsin and "Francine's of Hollywood" (whose motto is "If you've got the boulders, we've got the holders"), where lies the solution to Peggy's clothing crisis - a missing bra.
Al and Steve head off to a fancy boutique to get Peggy a new bra for her birthday.

This episode was found offensive by homemaker Terry Rakolta who began a letter writing campaign to boycott the show. However it had the opposite effect and ratings for the show grew which help put the Fox network on the television map.
