"Fifteen" の主人公JaneはStan とのデートを許され、デートに行く日の朝、髪を洗いました。
First of all, she decided that her hair simply would not do, so she washed it and put it up in pin curls, each one clamped with two bobby pins.
'Why, Jane, I thought you washed your hair day before yesterday,' remarked Mrs. Purdy.
'Did I? I don't remember,' fibbed Jane, staring critically at herself in the mirror.
"Fifteen" では何故かJaneの父母の事を her father/mother とは表現せず、Mr. PurdyとMrs. Purdyと呼びます。　今日は上の引用文に出てくる単語 "fib" を是非覚えたい。

RD4月号に色々な人のThe Best Day of My Lifeの話があり、その中に米国の黒人がTha Day I Ordered

a Cup of Coffeeが人生最良の日として追憶しています。

この最後の表現 "the day might end with me in a <B>pine box</B>" が分かりません。
"<B>pine box</B>" で調べると次ぎの辞書だけに意味が出ていました。

WikipediaもOneLookの検索結果にありましたが、"<B>pine box</B>" の項目は実際にはなく、"<B>pine

box</B>" をクリックすると "coffin" の項目に転送されるので、やはり "<B>pine box</B>" に "coffin"

の意味がある事は間違いありません。１９６０年当時の米国は黒人差別があり、記事の黒人は

Woolworth'sの白人専用のカフェカウンターに入り席についた時に思った、殺されるかも知れないとの気

持ちだったとの意味だと分かりました。　
補足（蛇足？）この記事はRDアジア版の４月号に掲載されていたのですが、米国版では２月号の掲載で

あることが分かりました。

banns

"Fifteen" はだんだんと米国の思春期の女性の話らしくなってきます。 ベイビーシッターをした家で会った肉の配達に来た青年から電話でJaneにデートの誘いがあり、両親が何だかんだと干渉している場面での父親のMr. Purdyの台詞です。 'We're not forbidding the banns just because the boy delivers horse meat,' said Mr. Purdy mildly, as he lit his pipe and flicked out the match.' "forbidding" が前にあるので "banns" は "ban" を連想しますが、 ここは "ban" の意味では絶対にありません。　では "banns" は何でしょう？　原形は "bann" でしょうか？　とにかく辞書を引くしかありません。 ・Oxford English Dictionary: plural noun: a notice read out on three successive Sundays in a parish church, announcing an intended marriage and giving the opportunity for objections.; Phrases: forbid the banns: archaic raise an objection to an intended marriage. ・Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: a public announcement, made in a church, that two people are going to get married: The banns were published in their local parish church. ・Wordnik Example: So, darling boy, do make up your mind to like the match, for I've already ordered the vicar to call the banns and sent the announcement to the Times. 複数形の "banns" でしか使われないのですね。　"forbid the banns" のフレーズも同時に覚えてましょう。

parting of the sea

次ぎの文はRD4月号の英国のRoyal Weddingの特集からの引用です。
As he made his way through the crowd I noticed there was no parting of the sea. It was as if Prince William was one of us.
"parting of the sea" は何かいわくありげな表現です。　辞書で "part/parting" と "sea" の項目から慣用句としての "parting of the sea" についての記載がないか調べましたが全く見つかりません。　長くなるので途中経過は省略しますが、結論として  "parting of the sea" は聖書にある "parting of the Red Sea" を念頭においた表現だと推測します。 モーゼがイスラエルの民を引き連れてエジプトから脱出しようとしたが行く手を遮る海を前にして、エジプトにいた方が良かったと不平をもらす者もいたが、モーゼが杖を振ると、海が割れて（"parting of the Red Sea"）渡れるようになったと旧約聖書に書かれています。　この "parting of the Red Sea" は "parting of the sea" とも表現される様で、従って、引用文の "there was no parting of the sea" は、Prince Williamが大勢の人の中に入っても、人々が離れて空間ができる様子ではなく、人々と打ち解けていたと言いたかったのだと思います。

charge

図書館に "Fifteen" があったのを見つけました。　この本を知っていたわけではなく著者の Beverry Cleary に見覚えがありました。　もう四半世紀前になりますが、商社の駐在員として米国に赴任していた頃に子供が読んでいた本を時々私も読んだのですが、その中でもBeverry Clearyのシリーズがとても面白く、"Ramona Quimby, Age 8" は今でもタイトルだけは覚えています。 上の子供が１３才の時に帰って来たので、題名 "Fifteen" の年齢層が多分対象のこの本は読んでいません。　子供の本と言っても知らない単語や表現が幾つも出て来るのが英語です。数ページ読んだだけで早速意味が分からない表現がありました。
'Hello,' said Sandra, as if she were surprised to see Jane so soon. Cuthbert began to snore.
'Hello.' Jane eyed her charge. Sandra's thin little face did look tired - so tired that Jane felt sorry for her.
Janeが１５才の主人公で、Sandraはベビーシッター先の女の子、Cuthbertはそこの犬です。
"charge" はもちろん知らない単語ではありませんが、色々な意味を持っているので厄介な単語です。　上記の意味を調べるのは私の先生、辞書に相談するしかありません。
ありますね、引用文での用法にぴったりの意味が。
・Macmillan Dictionary: formal someone that you are responsible for and take care of: She didn’t like it when her young charges started crying.
・American Heritage Dictionary: One that is entrusted to another's care or management: the baby sitter's three young charges.
・Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: old-fashioned a person, especially a child, who is in your care and who you are responsible for

昨日のクイズの正解は次ぎの通りです。

その他の問題の中にあった次ぎの単語の意味は面白いと思いました。
philtrum : groove below the nose: There was a thin moustache nestling on his philtrum .

RD の単語クイズWORD POWER! はネイティブを対象にしているのでいつも難しいのですが、4月号は特に難しく、１５問の内に知っている単語は昨年取り上げた "smidsy" （Ref. http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2010/03/6 ）だけでした。 他の単語は知らないものばかりですが、次ぎの二つは何となく分かりそうな気がしました。

dudgeon: A. damp basement B. belt buckle C. resentful anger
しかし、私の勘はどちらもはずれました。　皆さんはA～Cのどれが正解か分かりますか。

paroxysm

CamusのTHE OUTSIDER、Part Five 死刑の判決が出た主人公に牧師が会いに来ている場面です。
Then, for some reason, something exploded inside me. I started shouting at the top of my voice and I insulted him and told him not to pray for me. I'd grabbed him by the collar of his cassock. I was pouring everything out at him from the bottom of my heart in a paroxysm of joy and anger.
主人公は宗教は信じない、母親が死んでも涙を流さない、死刑を宣告されても何とも思わない様な変わった人間ですが、刑務所や死刑の宣告の経験はありませんが、考えて見ると自分の性格や考え方と半分位は同じ様な気もします。（少なくとも、宗教は信じない、母親、父親が死んだ時も涙を流さなかった事は同じです。）　但し、彼が人を殺した理由は全く理解も想像もできません。
"paroxysm" が気になる単語なので調べます。
・American Heritage Dictionary: A sudden outburst of emotion or action: a paroxysm of laughter.
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary:
1. a fit, attack, or sudden increase or recurrence of symptoms (as of a disease) : convulsion paroxysm

"paroxysm" は "fit", "convulsion" と同義語ですね。

white hair

One day, a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink.
She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast to her dark hair.
The little girl looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?"
Her mother replied, "Well, every time you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white."
The little girl thought about this explanation for a while and then asked, "Mommy, then why are ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"
