タイトルに使われている "GIG" ですが、ジャズやポピュラー音楽の生演奏を指す意味があるのは知っていますが、ここでの意味は何でしょう？　辞書を見ます。

nonbinary

今年の新語・流行語大賞はワンチームが選ばれましたが、英英辞書のMerriam-Websterが選んだWords of the Year 2019は "they" でした。えっ！と思いますね。それには理由があるのです。英語で人を指す場合、he/she, Mr/Mrs, Sir/Madamなどの様に性別が付きまといます。日本語のあの人とか～さんは男女の区別なく使えますが、英語では単数で男女の区別なく使える単語がありませんでした。そこで "they" を単数でも使用する様になって来たという状況があるそうです。
Merriam-Websterの "they" には次の説明が加わりました。
—used to refer to a single person whose gender is intentionally not revealed: A student was found with a knife and a BB gun in their backpack Monday, district spokeswoman Renee Murphy confirmed. The student, whose name has not been released, will be disciplined according to district policies, Murphy said. They also face charges from outside law enforcement, she said.

—used to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary (see nonbinary sense c): I knew certain things about … the person I was interviewing.… They had adopted their gender-neutral name a few years ago, when they began to consciously identify as nonbinary — that is, neither male nor female. They were in their late 20s, working as an event planner, applying to graduate school.
上の説明に出てきた "nonbinary" を今日は覚えたいと思います。

Googleplex

The key: preparation. If you're interviewing for a job, review the posting and take advantage of the whole Googleplex of information about your prospective company.
"Googleplex of information" とあるので "Googleplex" はGoogle検索と関係があるのかなと調べて見ると：
・The Computer Language Company Inc.: Google's headquarters in Mountain View, CA. The name has two meanings: firstly, it is the combination of Google and the company's headquarters (the complex), and secondly, it is a takeoff on the mathematical term "googolplex," spelled "g-o-l," not "g-l-e." A googolplex is 10 to the power of googol, written as 10googol.
この記事からすると "Googleplex" はGoogleの本社を指し、引用文での意味では正しくは "googolplex" と綴るべきだったようですが、私と同じようにGoogle検索で沢山の情報が得られるとの連想から "Googleplex" と書いたのでしょう。将来こちらのスペルの方が普及するように思えます。

Have you heard of the version Mary?

My 11-year-old takes his homework seriously. One question required him to write a sentence using the word version. His sentence: "Have you heard of the version Mary?"
少年の答えはどんな単語にも使える例文パターンですね。一瞬天才少年？と思いましたが、"virgin Mary" をもじった答えなので面白いのですね。

Beware of Smombies!

What's a smombie? It's the portmanteau of "smartphone zombie"--in other words, someone who crosses the street without looking up from his or her phome. (Could also be referred to as "roadkill."
"smombie" が辞書に掲載されているか見てみると、次の辞書に説明がありました。

・Macmillan Dictionary: a smartphone zombie: someone who is so busy looking at their phone that they do something stupid like stepping out into traffic: Walkers hit by curse of the smombie.
・Wiktionary: A walking person using a cellphone who is oblivious to the world around them.

"Dot the i's and cross the t's" は学生の頃（つまり半世紀以上も前）に知った慣用句ですが、実際の文章で見るのは恐らく初めてです。
・Oxford English Dictionary: Ensure that all details are correct.: I just have to dot the i's and cross the t's on my dissertation.

・Cambridge English Dictionary: to pay a great deal of attention to the details of something, especially when you are trying to complete a task: The negotiations are nearly finished, but we still have to dot the i's and cross the t's.

regarding

"The House of Silk" からの引用です。
Carstairs flinched when he heard this. His wife was regarding him curiously.
"regarding" ではつい "in regard to" を連想してしまいますが、ここでは明らかに "regard" の動詞としての意味ですね。辞書で "regard" の意味を確認します。

・Oxford English Dictionary: Gaze at steadily in a specified fashion.: Professor Ryker regarded him with a faint smile.

・Collins Dictionary: If you regard someone in a certain way, you look at them in that way.: She regarded him curiously for a moment.
