The Making of The Piano は残念ながら "The Piano" の映画を見たことがなければさっぱり意味の分からない内容でしたので、話の状況が唐突だと感じながらも "The Piano" を読み続ける事にしました。

ADA carrying her cape and bonnet hurries through the narrow bush path to BAINES' hut, FLORA has a fist of her skirt and is pulling back. ADA turns on FLORA and snatches the skirt out of the girl's hand. ADA signs to her and continues on.

But ADA does not wait to listen. FLORA walks back through the bush muttering childish <B>expletives</B> to herself. STEWART and his two MAORI helpers come out of the bush towards her. FLORA squeals with fright.

図書館にあった "The Piano" by Jane Campionを読み始めました。私は見ていませんが、 "The Piano" は映画になった話で、借りた本も普通の小説ではなく、映画の台本の形式で書かれています。
最初に取り上げる表現はSc 34 INT MISSION HOUSE DAYの場面からです。

"in unison" なら分かりますが "<B>in snatches</B>" は分からないので辞書を見ます。
私の知っている "<B>snatch</B>" 意味 "pull or take something away quickly" につられるせいか中々上の状況に合う意味が分かりませんが、次ぎの意味のいずれかでしょう。

今週の火曜日に丸の内カフェで開かれた日本英語交流連盟主催の "青谷優子さん（NHK国際放送局 ニュース制作部 英語アナウンサー）"による『英語音読TPO ～演説・ニュース・物語読み比べ～』と題されたレクチャーを聴いてきました。さすがベテランの英語アナウンサーで、芥川龍之介の蜘蛛の糸、"The Spider's Thread" (translated by Roger Pulvers) の朗読は素晴らしいものでした。
レクチャーの後、米国人のSusanさんとオーストラリア人のPaulさんと三人でビールを飲みながら雑談をしましたが、Susanさんが中国を旅行した時に中国には "goon" があちらこちらにいたと話をしていましたのでこの単語を今日は取り上げます。 辞書の説明でSusanさんの話の中の意味に近いものを取り出します。

そう言えば日本のスーパーなどにも最近は制服を着た警備員をよく見かけるようになりました。十五年程前に旅行でフィリッピンのマニラに行きましたが、その時にデパートやスーパーには必ず制服を着た警備員が入り口に数人いたので違和感を覚えたものです。その当時の日本ではデパートやスーパーで制服の警備員はそれ程目立つほどはいなかったと記憶しています。 万引きが増えたのでしょうね。嘆かわしい次第です。 Goons should be gone in future Japan.
