速効のボキャビル

リーダーズダイジェストとEnglish Journalは私が毎月（図書館から借りているので早くても月遅れですが）読んでいる愛読誌です。
English Journalの方は巻頭にある毎月の特集、速効のボキャビルと付録のインタビュー、ニュースのスクリプトの個所を特に読んでいます。　速効のボキャビルはいつも幾つかの覚えておきたい単語、表現があるので図書館から借りるようになる前も本屋でここだけ立ち読みをしていた個所です。　例えば９月号にも次に紹介する二つの表現がありました。

I don't subscribe to the view that cellular phones are the culprit when it comes to teenage crime.

この "subscribe to" は単なる主張ではなく、何らかの体系化された理論や考え方に対して賛成・同意することを指す、と説明がありました。

When the director started talking about the company's accounting practices, it went over everyone's heads.
この "go over one's head" は、～に理解ができない、～の理解がないまま進む、との意味だそうです。

Where is the beef?

２泊３日で愛知万博に行き昨晩帰ってきました。　混んでいるのは予想していましたが平日なのでまだましだろうと思っていましたが甘い考えでした。　確かに土日、休日と比較して相当入場者数は少ないとの事でしたが、とにかく何でも何十分、あるいは何時間も行列に並んで待たないと入れない、何も見れないで大変な経験でした。　入場券はもちろんもっているのですが、９時の入場開始３０分前に入り口についても入れるのは９時４０分、それからどこの行っても何十分以上の待ち時間、人気の館は何時間どころか既にその日の受付、整理券配布も終了となっていました。　もっとも短いので１５分というのがありましたが、何だか分かりますか？　答えはコンビニの行列前に掲示されていた待ち時間で数少ない会場内のコンビニも大人気、とにかくペットボトル、市販の弁当は外部からは持ち込み禁止ですから。

それでも外国館は比較的待ち時間が短いところがあり、何時間も待たされるドイツ館などを除きだいたい見ることができました。　日本で開かれているので当然ですが会場ではあまり英語に触れることはありませんでしたが一つだけ新しい言葉の収穫がありました。　それは "noosphere" で、日本語でも余り聴きなれない「人智圏」の言葉が使われており、字幕に "noosphere" とあったので、後で辞書で調べると人間の活動による変化が著しい生物圏の意味とありました。　英辞郎では簡単に「人類圏」とあるだけです。

行き帰りのバスで今回は「川柳入門、はじめのはじめ」を読みました。　そこで私も一句（川柳は一句とは言わないのかな）「愛知博　並んで得たは　オコルゾウ」
英語で俳句と言うのは聞いたことがありますが、英語で川柳は聞いたことはありません。　代わりに浮かんできた文句が十数年前に米国でマックの競争相手のコマーシャルで使われ、その後政治家も利用した決まり文句、"Where is the beef?"　

Red Herring

仕事で株の売買に関する英文を読む必要があったので付け焼刃ですが「金融英語の意味と読み方」（発行日興企画）を読み始めました。　公募と私募の項に A preliminary, or a “red herring,” prospectus is one that has been prepared for use by the underwriter to solicit interest from select investors in the public offering. の文章があり、“red herring”　の字義は「燻製にしん」という意味だが、仮目論見書の表紙が赤字で印刷されていることからこのように呼ばれると解説がありました。
こんな専門用語の意味はしりませんでしたが、“red herring” は人の注意をそらすこと（もの）の意味でよく使われる表現なのでよく見かけます。　燻製の鰊の意味もあるようですがこの意味で書かれたものを読んだことはありません。
以下が英々辞書にある定義、説明です。
? noun: any diversion intended to distract attention from the main issue
? noun: a dried and smoked herring having a reddish color

A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue.

Why is a deliberately misleading object called a "red herring"?

According to the site, British fugitives in the 1800s would rub a herring across their trail, thereby diverting the bloodhounds that were hot in pursuit. In the 1920s, American investment bankers started calling preliminary prospectuses "red herrings" as a warning to investors that the documents were not complete or final and could be misleading. （これは前述の本にあった仮目論見書の由来と違う説ですね。）

We liked the explanation, but wondered if there was more to the story. We spent some time searching and uncovered an alternate explanation, centered on hunting. The Word Detective explains that the curing process turns the fish a red color and lends it a distinctive smell. The fish was tied to a string and dragged through the woods to teach hunting dogs to follow a trail. Later, red herrings may also have been used to confuse the hounds in order to prolong a foxhunt or to test their ability to stay with a scent.

Another handy etymology source, Wilton's Word and Phrase Origins offers a similar explanation, but attributes the use of the herring to poachers, who used the scent to throw the dogs off the trail of game so they could claim the prize for themselves.

It seems that whether the prey was a fugitive or a fox, this pungent fish did the trick and distracted the dogs.

誰にでも、ごまかしたかったり、触れられたくないことやら都合の悪いことがあるのは東西何処も同じ様なので、この “red herring” の言葉にはまた必ず出会うでしょう。

leave no stone unturned

金曜日に夏川りみのコンサートに行ってきました。
綺麗な声で声量があって本当に素晴らしい歌手ですね。
彼女独特な味のある歌い方の「涙そうそう」や「童神」、「イラヨイ月夜浜」とかはもちろん良いのですが、実は私の好きな曲は「ゆいまーる」（沖縄の方言でゆいまーる＝助け合い、の意味だそうです）で、ＣＤだとバグパイプも加わった行進曲風の出だしになっていて、彼女の他の歌にはないとても陽気な曲です。

彼女は英語の歌を歌わないのでここから英語の話題にもって行くには他の歌手を登場させるしかありません。　最近初めてEminemと言うrapperのＣＤを聴きました。　音楽や歌に疎い私ですがEminemの名前は耳にした事はありましたが彼がrapのミュージシャンである事も知りませんでした。私にはEminemと他のrapperの曲の区別もできませんが、とにかく彼のrapも他のrapと同じで何を言っているのかさっぱり聴き取れません。　正確に言うと、four-letter-word は良く耳に入ってきますが、その他は何といっているのかほとんど分かりません。　ところがある曲でfour-letter-wordの他に、Bush administrationがどうのこうのとI won't leave no stone unturned.と言っているのが聴き取れました。"leave no stone unturned" と言うのは面白い表現なので活字では何度か目にした事があります。
例によって英辞郎の説明を拝借しますが、
石を一つ残らずひっくり返して調べる、草の根を分けても捜す、くまなく捜す、隅々まで調べる、調べ尽くす、あらゆる手［手段］を尽くす、あらゆる手を打つ、あらゆる手段を使う［講じる］、あらゆる可能性を調査する
など、徹底的に調べたりする時に使います。　そこで私もEminemが何と言っているのか"leave no stone unturned"で調べると（単にインターネットで一寸検索しただけですが）、その曲はSquare Dance Lyricsと言う曲だと判りました。　結構長いので一部だけを紹介しますが、興味のある方は最後に示すＵＲＬに行くと全文が掲載されています。

Mother Nature is resilient.

ラジオのNPRで先日の米国南部を襲ったKatrinaのニュースだか解説をしていました。　その中で "Mother Nature is resilient." と言う聞き慣れた表現を耳にしました。　と言っても "Mother Nature" と　"resilient" の別々の言葉としてで、"Mother" と "Nature"　を一緒になった表現は初めてですが。

"Mother Nature"は私の好きなNature Filmmaker Sir David Attenboroughの番組とか雑誌の "National Geography" あたりで耳にしたり読んだりした言葉だと思いますが、大自然とか母なる自然の事だろうと解釈し辞書を引いたことはありませんでした。 今回初めて辞書で確認して見ました。　どの辞書の定義も次に示すようなもので文字から受ける通りの意味ですが、"Mother" も　"Nature" も大文字で表す事は始めて知りました。

Mother Nature:
nature personified: the forces of nature personified as a willful being
nature personified as a woman considered as the source and guiding force of creation
The personification of nature as a powerful and nurturing woman.

母は強しの感覚は英語でもあるのですね。

一方 "resilient"の方は私のいるコンピュータ業界では宣伝文句として耳にたこができるぐらい使い古されている言葉です。"resilient"なコンピュータシステム、"resilient"なストレージシステム、"resilient"なネットワークシステム、と言うわけで "resilient" でないシステムはないかの様ですが、実態は全く反対で、コンピュータシステムは故障するもの、そして対策しているはずがまだ穴があるとか、費用や手間の問題でなんでもかんでもやたらに "resilient" システムにはできないので一旦トラブルがあると結構回復に苦労するのは大自然の災害に対する問題と全く同じです。

ラジオのNPRだけではなくテレビのBBCのKatrinaに関するニュースでも "resilient" の言葉を使っていました。　そこで、インターネットのBBBサイトで "resilient"の言葉を使った記事を検索すると：

Those in charge of the Regent Street event say the turnout has proved the resilience of the British and tourists after the bombings.

この文章はこの間のロンドン市内での爆弾テロに関する後追いニュースで使われていました。

CNNのサイトで "resilient" の言葉を使った記事を検索すると上位の５件はKatrinaに関する記事で使われていました。

Luckily, most children are resilient, both mentally and physically, and most will bounce back, experts say. Even in shelters this week, many played board games, shot baskets, or spun Hula Hoops.

結局多くの一般人は自然と同様に "resilient"なのでしょうか。
