１１月３０日のJapan Times Onlineの記事タイトルの単語 "switcheroo" が目に付きました。

和英辞書を見ると「不意の転換/逆転、突然変化、急変」とありましたが、一寸しっくりしません。　そこでロングマン現代アメリカ英語辞典を引くと、

a situation when someone secretely SWITCHes one object for a similar object

と説明があり、この記事の内容（カムコーダーがパスタソースのジャーに取り替えられていた）にぴったりである事が分かります。

留守電案内

こんな留守電案内のメッセージがあったとRDの投書にありました。

"Hi, I'm probably home. I'm just avoiding someone I don't like. Leave a message. If I don't call back, it's you."

確かに電話でも話したくない相手もいますよね。

Freudian slip

うっかりと間違ったことを言ってしまう、あるいは失言をしてしまうのは潜在的に出てしまう本心なのだと心理学者のフロイドが唱えた事から "Freudian slip" と言うのですが、その Freudian slip をもじって、また駄洒落を交えたジョークがRDの Oct.2006号にありました。

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing, but mean your mother.

"mother" は "another" もじったのでしょう。

shy of

世界史の単位が不足して卒業できなくなる問題の記事です。

Seniors at 7.1% of schools falling shy of required credits Some 47,000 seniors at 289 public high schools haven't earned enough credits to graduate.

"shy of" が不足を表していますが、履修科目を決める校長や教育委員会、文科省も何をしているのか本当に恥ずかしい日本の教育状況ですね。

Drinker

飲酒運転のことを　DWI、"driving while intoxicated"　と言うことを前に書きましたが、飲酒運転の面白いジョーク（実話？）を紹介します。

When the driver in front of my police car began weaving in and out of his lane, I quickly hit the sirens and pulled him over. As I approached his window, I was hit with the stench of alcohol.

“Sir,” I said, “can you tell me when you started drinking and how much you’ve had?”

“Well, Officer, I can’t tell you how much I’ve had,” he slurred. “But I started drinking in 1967.”

この人はきっとこれまでに何百杯、いや何千杯、もしかして、一日に一杯飲むとしたら、もしかしなくても１万杯は超すか、飲んだのでしょうね。

chuckle vs. giggle

RD(Asian Issue) September issueのHumourに関する特集記事の中に Chucklers are kind but introspective and gigglers are sexual and flirtatious. と言う記述がありました。
そこでchuckleとgiggleの違いについて英英辞書に当たってみました。

Dictionary.comによると、

Chuckle -verb (used without object)
1. to laugh softly or amusedly, usually with satisfaction: They chuckled at the child's efforts to walk.
2. to laugh to oneself: to chuckle while reading.

Giggle -verb (used without object)
to laugh in a silly, often high-pitched way, esp. with short, repeated gasps and titters, as from juvenile or ill-concealed amusement or nervous embarrassment.

確かに微妙な違いがあるようで、Chuckle は子供っぽく、Giggle の方は微妙な影を含んだ笑いのようですが、これを日本語で区別するとどうなるのでしょうか？
どちらも、「クスクス笑い」、「含み笑い」になってしまうと違いが分かりませんね。
