green ink, sequel

Wikipedia に "green ink" についての次ぎの説明があるのを見つけました。　
In journalism, Green Ink is (humorously) supposedly a major identifying characteristic of written correspondence from self-aggrandising pedants, cranks, charlatans and eccentrics.
Although no psychiatric equivalence with the preceding terms should be inferred, it is also used to refer to unusable correspondence originating with readers who are mentally ill.
Regardless of the colour of ink used, it is common to refer to correspondence of any kind (including email and webpages) as being in "green ink", so long as it broadly fits the following identifying characteristics:
Stridency
Impertinence
Unreasonableness
Unrealism
Fancifulness
Obsessiveness
難しい単語が幾つかありますが、要は "green ink" は青インクの意味ではなく書かれた内容の問題であり、青インクを "green ink" とするのはベトナム語特有の表現ではないかと推測します。
今日のハーフマラソンは自己最低記録でした。やはり練習不足では駄目ですね。

ベトナムの入出国カードにはもう一つ興味を引く表現がありました。
Please print in black or green ink.
日本語でも実際は緑色の交通信号を青信号と言いますが、それとは反対にこの入出国カードの "green ink" は緑のインクではなく青インクの事を指していると思いますが "green ink" と言う表現が英米（英語）でも使う表現なのか、それともベトナム語特有の表現なのか気になります。　

明日の日曜日に半年振りにハーフマラソンに参加するので昨晩久しぶりにジョッギングをしました。葛西臨海公園を走ったのですが、日が落ちた後でしたが東には富士山の陰が見え、南は東京湾の海ホタル、西側はデズニーランドのホテル群の明かりがとても綺麗でした。　マラソンの申し込みをした時には自己記録を更新するつもりだったのですが、ほとんど練習をしなかったので、目標は完走できればよしとすることに変更しました。

dyspnea

カンボジアにはベトナムのホーチミンシティ経由だったのでベトナム行き飛行機の中でベトナムの入出国カードが配られました。　乗り継ぎだけなので記入・提出の必要はなかったのですが読んでみると一つ知らない単語がありました。

"dyspnea" が病気の症状の一つである事は分かりますが何でしょう？
American Herritage Dictionary: Difficulty in breathing, often associated with lung or heart disease and resulting in shortness of breath. Also called air hunger.
なるほど、呼吸困難の症状の事ですね。　そう言えば夜中に呼吸が止まる無呼吸症の記事を前に読んだ時に "apnea"（無呼吸症）を覚えてたはずで、"pnea"　が呼吸を意味する言葉でした。

spell

カンボジア旅行から帰ってきました。　Cambodiaには往復ともHo Chi Minh City, Vietnum経由で行きましたがその時に飛行機で読んだThe Saigon Times, Nov.24 の二つの記事に "spell" の単語が使われていて、一つの方の "spell" の意味は知らないものでした。　まず知っている方の "spell" を含む文です。

これはOneLook Quick Definitions:　a period of indeterminate length (usually short) marked by some action or condition ("A spell of good weather") と同じ用法ですね。もっとも記事の "spell" は短いものではありませんが。
"spell" の意味としてはこの他にもちろん　recite the letters of or give the spelling of ("How do you spell this word?")や a psychological state induced by (or as if induced by) a magical incantation の意味は知っていますが、次ぎの記事の意味は分かりませんでした。

Dictionary.comにある次ぎの説明がこの文の "spell" の意味と同じです。 "spell": a turn, bout, fit, or period of anything experienced or occurring: a spell of coughing.
turn、boutにも "spell"　と同様に fit と同じ意味があるのも知りませんでした。
一緒に覚えておこう。

subside

ジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　からです。
Mrs.Whatsit looked hurt, but she subsided.
助成金を意味する "subsidy" は知っていますが、動詞の "subside" は知りません。
この "subside" は何十ページか後にまた出てきました。
"I thought for a moment - " Aunt Beast started, then subsided, sighing, "No It's not clear enouth."
Dictionary.comを見ると三つの意味が書かれていました。
1. to sink to a low or lower level.
2. to become quiet, less active, or less violent; abate: The laughter subsided.
3. to sink or fall to the bottom; settle; precipitate: to cause coffee grounds to subside.
引用文の "subside" の意味は２.の "abate" が最も近いのでしょう。
明日から一年振りに海外旅行に行きます。カンボジアのアンコールワットに行くだけですのでこのブログも１週間程お休みします。

ditto

今日は知らない単語の話ではなく久しぶりに出会った単語を話題にします。
The Japan Times Weekend Scene, Oct 17-23 に出ていた文です。
The fish was super fresh and the rice and vegetables came from unimpeachable organic sources. Ditto the pasta lunch: It tasted just as good as it looked.
私が社会人になって最初の仕事は輸出の書類作成で、パソコンなどない時代でしたのでタイプライターで間違えのないように種類の多い細かな電子部品の輸出書類をつくるのは大変でした。　その書類で使う単語に "ditto" がありました。
"ditto" はOneLook Quick Definitionsに "a mark used to indicate the word above it should be repeated" と説明があるように繰り返しマーク　" と同じ意味で使われます。（"ditto" 自体はマークではなくやはり単語で " などのマークを "ditto" と言うのが正しいと思います。"ditto" を略して "do" あるいは "- do -" などと記載することもあります。）
"ditto" は書類で使うだけかと思っていたのですが、先日ＴＶを見ていたらグループ歌手の一人がインタビューに答えた後に別のメンバーが "ditto" と言ったのをインタビューアーが聞き取れず聞き返していて、それを "same comment" とか何とか言い直していました。　Dictionary.comを見ると "ditto" は動詞としても使われることが分かりました。 verb: repeat an action or statement ("The next speaker dittoed her argument")
いずれにしても私としては何十年振りに昔馴染みにあった感じです。（それだけ英語に接する機会が少ないと言う事か。）

rocket

Reader's Digest７月号のNATURAL BOOSTERSと題したコラムからです。

その中の一つに：

"rocket" も何かの野菜のようですが聞いたことも読んだことも全くありません。（料理の本は読まないので当然か？）
では辞書を引きます。

写真をインターネットで探すと幾つもありましたが、それを見るとどうも"rocket" はイタリアンで言うルッコラ(rucola) と同じ野菜のようです。

don't give a hoot

ジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　からです。
But I love her. That's the funny part of it. I love them all, and they don't give a hoot about me.
"hoot" と言う単語は見覚えがありますが上の文での使われ方ではなかったようで意味は思い出せません。
即辞書を引きます。　以前見たことのある "hoot" は "the cry of an owl" あるいは "to utter the cry characteristic of an owl" の意味だった事を思い出しましたが、引用文での意味ではありません。 他の意味も見ましたがすっきりするものはないので恐らく慣用句だろうと思って調べると "give a hoot"　でありました。　WordNet での説明です。　"show no concern or interest; always used in the negative"; "I don't give a hoot"
TheFreeDictionaryの説明はもう少し丁寧です。　if you do not give a hoot about something or someone, you do not care about them at all. I don't give a hoot about keeping the house tidy. (often + about) They don't care two hoots who wins as long as it's a good game. (often + question word)
この慣用句に対して I don't give a hoot about this phrase. と言わないことにしよう。

shrapnel

English Journal 十月号に映画 "Iron Man" の紹介記事（by ケリー・スコット・ファイン）がありその中にあった知らない単語です。
As in the original, he must wear an electromagnet in his chest to keep inoperable shrapnel from entering his heart - a permanent reminder of his own complicity in creating weapons of mass destruction.
聞きなれない単語 "shrapnel" を調べます。

これでも分かりますが、Dictionary.comも見てみます。

なるほどShrapnel 氏が発明したからできた言葉ですか。こんな物騒なものは発明しなくても良かったのですが、Shrapnel 氏が発明しなくてもきっと別な人が発明していたでしょうね。

arrest

Reader's Digestの環境に関する記事からです。
Our glaciers are melting; the flow in our river systems in at least the northern parts will be affected. It's already happening and will worsen unless we arrest this change.
"arrest" の意味は逮捕（する）しか知らない私としては意味がよく分かりません。　そこで辞書を引きます。
OneLook Quick Definitions:　cause to stop ("Arrest the progress")
American Herritage Dictionary:　To stop; check: a brake that automatically arrests motion; arrested the growth of the tumor.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary: To stop; to check or hinder the motion or action of; as, to arrest the current of a river; to arrest the senses.
私としては記憶力の低下もなんとか "arrest" したいものです。
