the pirates of Penzance

"R" と "L" の区別はネイティブスピーカーにも難しいと言う話を元同時通訳者の村松増美さんからESUJのEnglish Clubで数年前に聞いた事を思い出しました。その証拠に"R" と "L" の聞き違いを話の前提とした "Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta, the pirates of Penzance" を例にあげ、その一場面をビデオで見せてもらいました。Wikipedia に次のように "the pirates of Penzance" の解説がありますが、主人公の乳母が "Pilot" （当時は飛行機の操縦士ではなく船乗り、航海士）を "Pirate" と聞き違えたと言う話です。

ON a rocky seashore on the coast of Cornwall the pirates of Penzance are holding a sherry party to celebrate the apprentice Frederic's promotion to the status of full-blown pirate on the expiry of his indentures. For today is the 29th of February, 1897, and it is his twenty-first birthday. His health is duly drunk, and in a speech of thanks Frederic startles the pirates by telling them of his intention to leave them for good. It seems that he was apprenticed to them in error. Ruth, the pirates'
maid-of-all-work, takes up the tale. She tells how, when she was formerly Frederic's nursery-maid, his parents instructed her to have the boy apprenticed to a pilot. Being hard of hearing she misheard, and in error Frederic was apprenticed to a pirate.

もっとも、乳母は耳が遠かったとなっているので、普通はネイティブスピーカーは"R" と "L" は聴き取れるのでしょうね。　でも、（一寸しつこい、と言うか、"Sour Grapes" ですが）ネイティブスピーカーではありませんが、英語の語源の解説でギリシャ語、ラテン語、ゲルマン語から英語にたどるつく過程で "R" が "L" （あるいはその逆の "L" が "R"か？）に変わったと書かれていた事を読んだことがありますので、"R" と "L" の区別ができないのは少なくとも日本人の専売特許ではないはず。　具体的な例が直ぐあげられないのが素人の浅はかさですが、今度証拠を見つけたらまた話題にします。

Necklaces and Blings

今週は「両洋の眼展」（三越デパート）、「世界らん展」（東京ドーム）、「ニューヨーク・バーク・コレクション」（東京都美術館）の三つの展示会を見に行ったので忙しい週でしたが、どれも見に行った価値のある良い展示会であり満足しました。

行き帰りに聴いた音楽の中にブラザーズ・フォーの "Seven daffodils" があり、(The taste of music shows one's age.) その中の一節がどうしても "necklaces and blings" と聞こえる。 "blings" は最近使われるようになった言葉なのでブラザーズ・フォーの時代にはなかった筈なのにと歌詞を調べて見ると、その個所は "But I can weave you moonbeams for necklaces and rings And I can show you morning on a thousand hills And kiss you and give you seven daffodils." であり、私のリスニングの欠点の一つである "R" と "L"　が区別できないので、文章の前後の意味で区別をしたのが原因でした。（こんなレベルでも４～５年前に受けたTOIECのリスニングは満点でしたので文章の前後の意味で区別する方法も悪くはない、と言うよりも、それしか私には方法がない）　けれど、最近覚えた　"bling" を知らなかったら、もしかするとちゃんと "necklaces and rings" と聞こえていたのかも知れないと思いました。

Nice Bling

ジョークは落ちが分からないと話になりませんが、リーダーズ・ダイジェストに出ていたジョークの落ちの個所に辞書

に出ていない単語があり見当がつきませんでした。　短いジョークなので全文を次に引用します。

Our former pastor was promoted to bishop and recently showed up at a family gathering in his new clerical garb. My 25-year-old daughter was clearly impressed. Pointing to the gold cross banging around his neck, she said, "Nice bling."

知人で完全なバイリンガル、漢字混じりの日本語もワープロで書ける米国人にこの "bling" の意味を尋ねたが知らなかった。そこで辞書ではなくオンライン事典のWikipediaとGoogleの検索でチェックしたら次の事が分かりました。

Bling-bling is a hip hop slang term which refers to expensive jewelry and other accoutrements, and also to an entire lifestyle built around excess spending and ostentation. According to the Urban Dictionary [1], the term originated as Jamaican slang referring to the onomatopoeia "sound" produced in animated cartoons when light reflects off a diamond.

Googleの検索で見つけたのは、"Posted by Bruce Kahl on June 07, 2003 'Bling-Bling' Makes New Oxford Dictionary" の記事です。
これらの事から分かるのは "bling" は正式には "bling-bling" で "hip hop" （家内は時々この練習をしているとは聞いているが、実は私はこれも何だかは良くは知らない）やラップをする人達が身に着けている高価（？）はネックレスのような装飾品を示しているようだ。ジョークでは聖職者がつけている装飾品に対して若い人が "Nice bling." と言ったのが可笑しかったようだ。

after a fashion

前回話題にしたドラッカーの論文の内容はなるほどと思う個所が多かったのでBizCommに示されていた次のリンク先にある残りの５つの記事も一気に読みました。

もっとも印象に残った個所は最後の論文 "The Way Ahead" 最後の段落で、少々長くなりますが次に引用します。

All this suggests that the greatest changes are almost certainly still ahead of us. We can also be sure that the society of 2030 will be very different from that of today, and that it will bear little resemblance to that predicted by today's best-selling futurists. It will not be dominated or even shaped by information technology. IT will, of course, be important, but it will be only one of several important new technologies. The central feature of the next society, as of its predecessors, will be new institutions and new theories, ideologies and problems.

という訳で、ドラッカー先生はずるいというか、正直というか、よくできたジョークを読み終えた気がしました。　英語の表現で勉強になったのは "after a fashion"　で次のようにつかわれていました。

Will the corporation survive? Yes, after a fashion.

"after a fashion " は英英辞書で "In some way or other, especially to a limited extent: She sings after a fashion."　とありました。　なんとか、どうにか、と言ったところでしょうか。

at arm's length

月に２回開かれるビジネス英語サークル（BizCommuneについては最後に紹介します）に先週参加しました。証券会社に勤めているリーダーが今年はゲーム理論を中心に勉強すると言うことで既に２回集まりがありました。毎回１０名程度のメンバーが参加しています。ゲーム理論ではないのですが、前回はPeter Druckerの論文 "The Next Society"　も勉強の題材として頂きました。　そのDruckerの論文に３年程前に私が契約関係の仕事について間もない頃に出会った表現 "at arm's length" を見かけました。この表現は一見 "within a stone's throw of" と同様な近くにある（物理てきな距離だけではなく心理的な）印象を受けるのですが、実際は何故か正反対に近いような意味を持つ表現なので要注意です。

ドラッカーの記事は：　"New ways of working with people at arm's length will increasingly become the central managerial issue of employing organizations, and not just of businesses." となっていますが、「手の届く距離の親しい関係」ではなく、むしろ「距離を置く」、「よそよそしい態度を取る」の意味で使っているのは間違いないでしょう。

契約書などでは、「独立した」、「影響を受けない」ような関係を明示する時に使われています。以下にLaw.com DictionaryとMerriam-Webster Online Dictionaryの定義を示します。

adj. the description of an agreement made by two parties freely and independently of each other, and without some special relationship, such as being a relative, having another deal on the side or one party having complete control of the other. It becomes important to determine if an agreement was freely entered into to show that the price, requirements, and other conditions were fair and real. Example: if a man sells property to his son the value set may not be the true value since it may not have been an "arm's length" transaction.

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
1 : a distance discouraging personal contact or familiarity <kept former friends at arm's length now>
2 : the condition or fact that the parties to a transaction are independent and on an equal footing

IM or IMing

２年半程前に　emikoさんと言う方から "lol" または "LOL"の意味を教えてもらったことがあります。（その時のemikoさんの説明「it means 超おかしい！！！ n laughin'　ummmm Lord Of Laughing...or Laughing Of Lord......hehehe　when you wanna laugh a lot you can use LOL」）

最近読んだＲＤに記事に "LOL" のような略語を "online shorthand" として幾つか紹介しておりました。

The fast-paced nature of IMing helped spread an online shorthand, which AOL has complied in a 77-term "dictionary":
IMO: in my opinion
YT: you there?
AFIK: as far as I know
DQMOT: Don't quote me on this.

３文字、４文字略語はＩＴ業界でも業界用語として頻繁に使われるのですがを憶えられるのは若い人ですね。　私はもうついていけません。

"chew his tail"

Reader's Digest November, 2005の記事中に次のような個所がありました。

Indeed, like several of the boy's teachers, Hallman says Moore had plenty of friends, was bright and well-mannered. "I could chew his tail," Hallman recalls, "and he'd say, 'Yes, sir.'"

この "I could chew his tail," の意味が分かりません。　"chew his tail"  が慣用句ではないかと辞書やインターネットで色々調べたがどこにもそれを慣用句として説明しているものはありませんでした。　そこで "Ask the English Teacher" というWeb Siteを見つけたので質問して見ました。　そしたら次のような丁寧な説明をしてくれました。

We have a lot of slang expressions in English about the backside, buttocks, tail, or (most often) ass. These are usually very undignified. When someone says, "I'll kick his ass," it means "I will beat him until he turns to run, and then I will kick him when he can't even defend himself." In other words, my victory will be complete.

So when the teacher says "I could chew his tail," he means, "I could treat him insultingly." But the boy is so polite that he would not resist such treatment.

と言うことで "chew his tail"  は慣用句というより、スラングだったのです。
