solid pocket

Reader's Digest 7月号にReader's Digestのチェコ版の編集長が書いた文があり、その中の単語 "solid pocket" のイメージがわきません。
Prince Charles and James Bond both used similar coats: waterproof wool gabardine, chequer inside, bone buttons, solid pocket, and shoulder straps.
辞書で "solid" に "pocket" を形容するような意味があるのか調べます。

・Cambridge Dictionaries Online: hard or firm, keeping a clear shape: solid ground, a solid object, a solid structure
・Infoplease: not flimsy, slight, or light, as buildings, furniture, fabrics, or food; substantial.
上の意味の中では "made firmly and well" が "solid pocket" の形容詞とは一番合っている様だ。

old sport

The Great Gatsbyと言う米国の小説を読んでいますが、富豪のGatsbyは主人公のNickの事をいつも "old sport" と呼びかけています。
"sport" の単語はこれまでに４回取り上げましたが、この呼びかけで使う "sport" は "good sport" (Ref. http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2011/06/7 ) や "a pleasant companion" (Ref. http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2009/11/2 ) を連想させます。
次ぎの辞書に "sport" を呼びかけに使う説明がありました。

Hey sport, how are you?
この小説の著者は１８９６年生まれなので、 "sport" を呼びかけに使う人はもういないかも知れません。（小説の中でもGatsbyだけが使っています。）

excoriate

The Japan Times Online, August 12, 2011の記事タイトルに知らない単語がありました。
Ireland excoriates Vatican over new reports of abuse
"excoriates" の意味は分かりませんが記事を読んでみます。
記事を書いたのはKevin Rafferty (is a former editor of The Universe, the leading Catholic newspaper) で、カトリックの司祭による子供などの虐待に対するローマ法王の怠慢を非難しています。従って、"excoriate" は非難とほぼ同じ意味だと分かります。記事の最後のパラグラフを引用します。
If the Roman Catholic Church cannot protect the youngest, weakest and innocent of its members from abuse at the hands of its clerics while the abusers themselves are protected by its prelates, what hope or faith can anyone have in the church or believe any of its claims to truth or goodness?
宗教も人が創ったものなので（神が創ったものではありません）、どこかの国の企業、公的機関、警察などの隠蔽体質と同じ機能を備えていても不思議ではありません。　
さて、一応 "excoriate" を辞書で確認します。

最後に引用した辞書に書かれていた次ぎの説明は "excoriate" のニュアンスが良く分かります。

"excoriate" は単なる非難ではなく、強く、激しく非難しているのですね。耳が痛い程度の非難ではなく、やけどで皮膚がただれる程の痛みを感じなくてはいけない様だ。

courtesy bay

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgeraldを読んでいますが、読み初めの予感が的中しました。知らない単語は他の本と同程度の頻度で出てきますが、覚えたい単語、興味を引く表現は今のところ出てきません。しかしながら、意味がよく分からない表現がちらほらあります。単語の意味が分からない、あるいは慣用句に気が付かないと言う問題だけではなさそうです。 次ぎの文は、主人公のNick Carawayが住み始めたロングアイランドの自宅（多分借家）付近についての記述個所です。
I lived at West Egg, the - well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them.

Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water, and the history of the summer really begins on the evening I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans.
辞書を引いても中々すっきりしないのが West EggとEast Eggの間にあると思われる "bay" についている形容詞、 "courtesy" です。　"courtesy bay" とは何でしょうか？
辞書に掲載されている "courtesy" のほとんどの例は、人の態度、行動に対するものか、無料で提供されるサービス/品物で、引用文のような用例はなかなか見つかりませんでしたが、次ぎの辞書に出ていた例がかなり近い用例だと思いました。

West EggとEast Eggの間にある海は "courtesy" で "bay" と呼ばれているが、実際は "cove" に近いか、 "cove" と呼んだ方が適当と言うことだと解釈しましが、どうでしょうか？

carriage

MURDER at the Tokyo Lawn Tennis Clubの著者、Robert J. Collinsのもう一つの作品、Max Dangerを図書館に予約したのですが、一週間経っても入手できません。貸し出し中でも、他の予約者がいる訳ではないのに紛失中の様です。しかたがないので代わりにThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgeraldを読むことにしました。書名は聞いたことがあるのですが、内容は全く知りません。映画作品にもなった様なので、映画名として聞いた事があるのかも知りません。読み始めましたが、場所や人物の描写がやけに詳しく、文学作品が苦手の私としては手こずる気がします。

"carriage" と言うと何か運ぶもの、昔なら馬車、現代ならタイプライターやプリンターの "carriage" や、そこから派生した "carriage return/CR" を直ぐに連想しますが、引用文の "carriage" は容姿と関係がありそうですが、辞書の説明を見ます。

なるほど "carriage" の動きがかもし出す雰囲気を表せるのですね。 ビートルズの歌の文句 "Something in the way she moves..." を思い出しました。

manly port

MURDER at the Tokyo Lawn Tennis Clubを読み終えたので、もう一冊図書館にある同じ著者の本を予約したのですが、他には誰も読んでいない状態のはずなのに調査中のままで手に入りません。別の本を予約しましたが、それが届く前のつなぎとして読みかけの子供向けの本を読みました。BROWNIESというタイトルでBROWNIESは想像上の小さな妖精です。次ぎの抜粋個所でも分かりますが、文章は見事に全て韻が踏まれています。BROWNIESがSnow Manを作る話の個所です。
What plan or shape the busy band
Of cunning Brownies had in hand.
But plan they had, and deftness too,
As well was seen when they were through.
The rounded form and manly port
Showed modeling of rarest sort,
While charcoal eyes, so well designed
They seemed to read the very mind,

"manly port" の意味が分からないので辞書を引きます。

どうも古い言葉の様で、最近の辞書には例文なしで上記程度の説明か、この意味を載せていないものがほとんどですが、古い辞書には次ぎのように例文も載せていました。

古い言葉なのでこんな意味は覚えなくても良いかなと思いましたが、小学生が読む本に出てきた単語なので、知らないのも恥ずかしい気がします。

woman-of-the-moment

MURDER at the Tokyo Lawn Tennis Clubの事件が片付き、Kawamura警部は家族の怪我が治った後で米国のデズニーランドとハワイに家族と旅行をし、成田に帰ってきました。
Suzuki-san and his "wife" met the Kawamura family at Narita Airport when they returned from the United States. The only jarring note in the reunion was that Suzuki-san's woman-of-the-moment, smiling, looking very attentive, was the waitress from the Tokyo Lawn Tennis Club.
部下のSuzuki-sanの "wife" に ""が付いているのは、話の中でこれまで独身だったからでしょう。
相手の女性との関係は事件を捜査しているときに次ぎのように伏線がありました。
"I'm in love," confirmed a sweating Suzuki. "It can happen to anybody."
Kawamura looked at his assistant's shaved, bullet head.
"You don't realize," added Suzuki-san, "but many ladies like my style. Kojak," he said, referring to an American television show popular in Japan.
Kojak、懐かしいですね、昔テレビで見ました。ところで "woman-of-the-moment" は "spur-of-the-moment" を連想させるので、一目ぼれの意味がある様な気がしますがどうでしょうか？
"of the moment" の意味として次ぎの説明がありました。

一目ぼれのニュアンスは無い様です。　しかし、今は好きだけれど将来はどうなるか分からないニュアンスがある気がします。

file out

MURDER at the Tokyo Lawn Tennis ClubでKawamura警部は一連の殺人事件の犯人で、しかも警部の家族までも襲わさせた、テニスクラブのpresidentである、元駐米大使のMorimotoと対決すべく、Tennis Clubの理事会が終わるのを待っていました。
Within a minute or two, the conference room door at the rear of the lounge area opened and the fully dressed board members began to file out.
"file out" は初めて見る表現ですが、理事会が終わった場面なので、理事がぞろぞろと会議室のドアから出てきているのを示しているに違いありません。　この"file" も以前取り上げた表現 "indian file"（a line of persons or things ranged one behind the other

・Wiktionary: To exit in line (in a single file).: People filed out in a single line to get through the narrow door.

ぞろぞろと出てくる場面を視覚的にに想像できる表現ですね。

with a level gaze

MURDER at the Tokyo Lawn Tennis Clubで最初に殺されたShig Manabeが書き残したmemoirsを読んだKawamura警部は、全ての事件の裏には現在Lawn Tennis ClubのPresidentで第二次大戦中は憲兵隊にいたMorimotoがいた事が分かり、Tennis Clubに行きMorimotoに会いに行きます。Tennis Clubで夫婦で長年住み込みで働いているground masterのNabaに出会いました。
Kawamura turned from the phone and was surprised to see Naba standing in the doorway. He looked at Kawamura with a level graze.
引用文の最後に出てきた "with a level graze" は初めて見る表現ですが、以前取り上げた "looked at her levelly"（calmly and without excitement　Ref. http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2008/08/3）と同じ様な意味だと推測できますが、辞書で確認します。
