派手な

「派手な」とか「けばけばしい」様子を表す言葉として "gaudy" とか"showy". "flashy" を知っていましたが、他に "meretricious", "tawdry" も似たような意味をもっている言葉があり、それらのニュアンスを説明した文にあいました。

" Gaudy is the most positive of the four near synonyms "gaudy," "flashy," "meretricious," and "tawdry." "Flashy" implies shallowness, while "meretricious" suggests falseness and misrepresentation. "Tawdry" suggests cheapness and sleaziness. "Gaudy" implies excess, clashing colors that may or may not be outlandish.

いずれにせよ余りほめている感じはないのですが、良い意味でいう場合は "colorful", "conspicuous" などが使われるのでしょうか？

リーダーズダイジェストの記事で、妻が夫に秘かに毒を飲ませて殺すという我国でも聞いた事のあるような話がありました。　次の文はその中のくだりです。

In July 2001, officials exhumed Glenn’s body and tested for ethylene glycol. He had also been poisoned with anti-freeze. Lynn had likely administered the sweet, odorless substance over a period of days in Jell-O, tea and soup.

（注：　Sweet here means ethylene glycol = antifreeze）

文中にある動詞 "administer"　の意味として管理する、運営するようない意味しか知りませんでしたので早速辞書を引くと、（薬などを）塗布｛とふ｝する、投与｛とうよ｝する　”give or apply (medications)”　意味があり上記の文ではその意味で使われている事が分かりました。

clickwrap

私の仕事の６～７割は会社が締結する契約書を読む事です。　もちろん読むだけではなく、会社にとって不利・無理な条件等々はないかどうか考えながら読んでいます。　私が扱う契約書の大半は日本語ですが、ほんの１～２％程度、数でいうと年に十数件程度の英語で書かれた契約書も読んでいます。　ところで最近読んだ契約書の中に次のような文がありました。

if an SLA (Software License Agreement) is provided in the form of a "clickwrap" or other online agreement requiring an action by the End-User to document acceptance of the agreement, Company shall ensure that an authorized representative of the End-User undertake the required action to form a binding agreement;

この "clickwrap" なる言葉は初めて見るものでしたが、"shrinkwrap" あるいは "shrinkwrap agreement" の言葉にはなじみがあるので、"click-on" あるいは "click-on agreement" の意味であろうとは直ぐに推測は付きました。　念のために辞書で確認すると：

A clickwrap agreement (also known as a "clickthrough" agreement) or license stems from software "shrinkwrap" licenses where the end user agrees to the terms of use when they open the shrinkwrap. A clickwrap typically comes in the form of an "I Agree" or similarly worded button on a dialog box or pop-up web page.

とあり、"shrinkwrap agreement" が梱包の "shrinkwrap" を破って開封するとソフトウェアの使用許諾書の条件を承諾したと看做されるのと同様に　"clickwrap" の場合には同意のボタンをクリックすることにより使用許諾書の条件を承諾したことにする契約だという事が分かります。　ボタンを押すだけなので "wrap" とは関係がないので　"click-on"　の方が適切に思えますが、どう言うわけか "clickwrap"　なる言葉も一般的なようです。

Googleで調べて見ると：　 "clickwrap agreement"で４６３件、 "clickwrap" AND "agreement" なら23,600,000件で、それに対し "click-on agreement" で１８２件、 "click-on" AND "agreement" では20,400,000の検索結果となったので、結論としては "clickwrap" も　"click-on" 　どちらも同じように使われていることが確認できました。
