Asahi.comのApril 25, 2006付 Tips on English（http://www.asahi.com/english/weekly/memo/memo.html） のコラムはNIMBY(not in my backyard)を紹介した後に「在日米軍基地移転をめぐり各地で起こっている反対運 動について、Newsweek 誌は Not in My Home Port という見出しで伝えた。日本側の態度をa recalcitrant Japan could prove to be a growing strategic headache と述べていた」と書いてありました。　この文中に ある "recalcitrant" 以前次のような文にあった時に憶えたいと思った単語です。 She tried to control her recalcitrant son by grounding him. 彼女は、反抗的な息子を外出禁止にして管 理しようとした。 "recalcitrant" の意味は辞書には次のようにありました。【名】 扱いにくい人、強情っ張り【形-1】 （権力｛けんりょく｝などに）抵抗｛ていこう｝する、断固反対する【形-2】 （人が）反抗的｛はんこうてき｝な、御しがたい、扱いにくい

また、"次の例では「開き直る」ような意味に使われています。

Unless he is willing to withdraw this statement, he only sounds recalcitrant.

「開き直る」の意味では次のように "defiant" も使われます。 As Indonesia's economy worsens, President Suharto turns defiant, rejecting the West's advice.

履き慣らす

RD 2006 March issueの次のジョークにビジネス英語、教科書英語ではまずお目にかからない「（靴を）履き慣らす」にあたると思われる表現がありました。

While sitting in New York’s Central Park, I watched a little girl as she dragged herself up a path behind her mother.
“Mummy,” she griped loudly, “my feet are so tired.”
“Well, of course you feet are tired,” said the intrepid mother, still charging ahead.
“They’re only five years old. You’ve got to break them in.”

最後の "break them in" は、靴を履き慣らすの意味でしょう。

levity

RD Marchにあった記事です。逸話かジョークか分かりませんが。

The flight I was piloting was overbooked. So the gate agent came aboard with an offer. In exchange for leaving the plane, two volunteers would get fee hotel rooms, meal vouchers and tickets on the next morning’s flight. When nobody volunteered, I decided to try a little levity.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said over the PA, “if it helps you in making your decision, I’m not a very good pilot.”

たしかに、幾ら何でも場をわきまえない軽率なジョーダンですよね。 しかし、乗客も負けてはいません。

A loud voice from the back yelled, “Then YOU get off!”

Professional courtesy

『英語頭脳はユーモアセンスから』（丸山孝男著）を読みました。

余り目ぼしいジョークは無かったのですが、自分に当てはまる次のような言葉が面白く感じたのは何故でしょう？
“Middle age is when you stop criticizing the older generation and start criticizing the younger one.”

また、次はマーク・トウェインの言だそうです。
“When your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it's a sure sign you're getting old.”
さすがに鋭い洞察ですね。 そろそろ言われそうですね。

子供の頃から国語、特に詩の鑑賞は苦手だったので、詩人についての次の言葉も愉快だと思いました。
"A poet has a great imagination ? he imagines people will read his poems." もっとも私なら、"read" は "understand" にしますが。

私が時々買う宝くじについての定義は “Lottery: A tax on fools” と250年程前に Henry Fielding という人が言ったそうですが、認めざるを得ないですね。　前に、宝くじを買う人の事を “A statistically challenged person” （統計・確率に弱い人）と何かに書かれていたのを思い出しました。

Taxと言えば、税金を申告をする方は次の謎々も納得でしょうね。（給料天引きだと余り税金を払っている実感はないのが残念）

"Professional courtesy."

"Professional courtesy." (同業者の礼儀）は "Professional etiquette." とも言えるようですね。

snafu

The Nikkei Weekly March 20, 2006に永田議員のメール問題の記事があり見出しは次
のようになっていました。
E-mail affair ends in debacle for DPJ
But some good may come of Nagata snafu if party learns from mistakes
この中の "snafu" は 軍事用語の"Situation Normal All Fucked Up"（混乱状態）か
らきていると以前ものの本で読んだことがあります。
同じく軍事用語の "AWOL" (absence without leave　無許可の離隊、それから転じて
無断欠勤、無断外出の意味にも使われる）がありますが、つい最近NPR(National
Public Radio)放送を聞いていたらエイオールと発音しているのに気が付きました。
活字では見たことのあるAWOLですが、耳にしたのは初めてでした。
ちなみに "snafu" の発音をオンライン辞書のMerriam-Websterで調べると、スナフー
で "fu" にアクセントを付けていました。
これで今度は耳で "snafu" と聞いても判るぞ。
