colourably

仕事で接する英語は英文の契約書を読むことだけで、つまり読んでも内容的には面白いとは言えず、また使われる英語も限られているので、英語の勉強にも余りなりません。しかしながら、１０件の契約書に１件の頻度で見慣れない単語・表現（自分にとってですが）に会う事があります。最近読んだ代理店契約書に出てきた "colourably"の意味を私は知りませんでした。

次に示すのがその契約書からの抜粋です。メーカー名は実名ではなく "ABC" に変えています。
DISTRIBUTOR shall not make any representations concerning the Products that are inconsistent with ABC's marketing materials and advertising. In no event shall DISTRIBUTOR register any domain or establish operate sponsor or contribute content to any Internet site which incorporates within its URL words colourably similar or identical to ABC or the brand name of the Products or any other brand, name or mark of ABC or its products.

最初 "colourably"で引いても辞書に掲載はありませんでしたが、米国式スペルの "colorably" で引くと次の二つの辞書に意味が掲載されていました。

Dictionary.com
1. Meant to deceive; not genuine.
2. Seemingly true or genuine; plausible.

Merriam-Webster
1 : seemingly valid or genuine <a colorable claim in law>
2 : intended to deceive : COUNTERFEIT <colorable and false pretenses>

つまり "colorable" に「本当らしい」、「もっともらしい」の意味があるのですね。

chops

最近読んだ "Logic Made Easy" (by Deborah J. Bennett)と言う本の中に
"All people with good chops play the horn.” He’s not a horn player but he does have good chops.
と言う個所がありました。　“chops” と来ると「力道山の空手チョップ」を思い出すのですが（歳がわかりますね）、それにしてもこの文脈に合う "chops" の意味が思い浮かびません。　辞書で "chop" を引いてもやはりこの文にあう意味は載っていません。念のために "chops" で引いて見ると、ありましたこの文にぴったりの意味が。

1. Usually, chops. the jaw.
2. a. the oral cavity; mouth.
　b. Slang. the embouchure or technique necessary to play a wind instrument.
   c. Slang. musical ability on any instrument, esp. in playing jazz or rock; technical virtuosity.
   d. Slang. the music or musical part played by an instrumentalist, esp. a solo passage.

前述の本にある文は 2.c.の意味で使われていたのですね。
複数形の単語は単数形にして引くだけでは判らない事もある教訓を学びました。

ついでに辞書にあった難しい単語 "embouchure" と "virtuosity" の意味も調べました。

embouchure: 【名】 〈フランス語〉アンブシュア、（管楽器の）吹き口、河口◆フランス語。管楽器演奏時の独特な口や唇や舌や歯やあごやほおの形や姿勢や力の入り方、または管楽器の歌口

virtuosity: 【名】 技巧、名人芸

メルマガ「ArcaMax Vocabulary」に接尾語 "LESS" についての面白い記事がありました。

Why did a fatigued Santa get everyone's toys mixed up? Because he was listless.
Why did the Boston Red Sox struggle after 1918? Because they were Ruthless.
Why was the car with an automatic transmission so sluggish? Because it was shiftless.

接尾語 "LESS" は名詞について、～がない、～足りない、などを意味する形容詞をつくることはご存知の通りです。　
上の例文はジョークなので、例文の listless/ruthless/shiftless はリストが無かった、ベーブルース(Ruth）がいなかった、シフトギヤが無かった、の意味を兼ねていますが、listは古語では「～したい気持ち、渇望、好み」の意味をもっていたので "listless" に「疲れて気の抜けた、無関心な、気乗りしない、だるい」の意味が出てきます。

"ruth" は今は使われなくなっていますが「哀れみ、悲しみ、後悔」の意味があり、"ruthless" は「無慈悲な、非情な、冷酷な」となります。

"shift" には「 機知・機略に富むこと、高い処理能力・知恵のあること」を意味していました。それで "shiftless" は「やる気のない、怠けた、怠惰な、無能な、役に立たない」となるのです。

Wayward

少し前になりますが、羽田空港で外国籍の作業者が少し常軌を逸した行動で空港内に入り、飛行機の発着を止めた事件がありました。　その時の英字ニュースのタイトルと最初の文は次のようになっていました。

Wayward worker shuts down Haneda

Tokyo's Haneda airport suspends flights for about two hours after an infrared sensor system detected an inexperienced part-time worker crossing a runway without permission.

この "wayward" の単語をMerriam-Websterで引くと：

1: following one's own capricious, wanton, or depraved inclinations : UNGOVERNABLE <a wayward child>

2 : following no clear principle or law : UNPREDICTABLE

3 : opposite to what is desired or expected : UNTOWARD <wayward fate>

とありました。　事件の男の行動はこの1と２の両方に該当しますね。

英辞郎では "wayward" の意味として

「正道からそれる、理不尽な、わがままな、強情な、気の変わりやすい、気まぐれな、不規則な」の説明があり、次の例文を掲載していました。

I urged my daughter not to lead a wayward life.

a thing

"thing" と言うと直ぐに「（ある）事」とか「（ある）物」が単純に思い浮かんでくるのですが最近読んだ次の文に出てくる "a thing" は単なる事物では無い事は推測できますね。

My mother had a thing for speed, so I was not surprised when a police car pulled us over one day as we were driving.

そこで辞書を引くと

1) A persistent illogical feeling, as a desire or an aversion; an obsession: "He has a thing about seafood."

2) an unaccountable attitude or feeling about something, as of fear or aversion: "I have a thing about spiders."

3) Be obsessed or preoccupied with something. For example, He has a thing about disorder in the garage, or Bob has a thing about brunettes.

などの説明と例が出ていました。　最初の文の母親はスピード狂なのでしょうか。

Procrustean bed

"To get Jason's bike into the trunk of the car required a few procrustean adjustments."

この文に出てくる "procrustean" はギリシャ神話の巨人プロクルステスの話からできた言葉で、 「無理に規準に合わせようとする」、「無理に型にはめようとする、無理に画一化しようとする」意味で使われます。

Wikipediaにこの神話の説明が次のように書かれています。

In Greek mythology, Procrustes (the stretcher), also known as Damastes (subduer) and Polypemon (harming much), was a bandit from Attica.

He had his stronghold in the hills outside Eleusis. There, he had an iron bed into which he invited every passerby to lie down.

If the guest proved too tall, he would amputate the excess length; if the victim was found too short, he was then stretched out on the rack until he fit.

Nobody would ever fit in the bed because it was secretly adjustable: Procrustes would stretch or shrink it upon sizing his victims from afar.

Procrustes continued his reign of terror until he was captured by Theseus, who "fitted" Procrustes to his own bed and cut off his head and feet (since Theseus was a stout fellow, the bed had been set on the short position).

Killing Procrustes was the last adventure of Theseus on his journey from Troezen to Athens.

神話に元々出てくる "Procrustean bed" あるいは "procrustean bed" も「画一的な方法」、「独断と偏見による画一的な制度」の意味で良く使われます。

"Procrustean bed" の意味を Merriam-Webster OnLine では次の様に説明しています。

"a scheme or pattern into which someone or something is arbitrarily forced"

prune

次の話は簡単な英語なんですがどうしても落ちが分かりませんでした。

An elderly lady approached me in the supermarket.
"Would you mind getting that tin from that high shelf for me?" she asked.
I, of course, obliged, noting jovially, "My wife has this problem, too!"
But an icy look had fallen across the woman's face. Looking down, I realised I was handing her a tin of prunes.

そこで会社に来るネイティブに尋ねたところ、"prune" は便秘に利き、とくに "prune juice"  が便秘止めとして飲まれると説明されました。　つまり上記の話では男性の言う "problem" は便秘を意味していた訳ではないのに、老婦人は便秘のことを示していると思った訳ですね。　米国では若者の遊びに、負けると罰として "prune juice" を一杯飲むゲームがあるそうです。

www.health911.com/ remedies/rem_consti.htm　に "prune juice" は便秘に利く民間療法としてあるが長期的に利用するのは良くないと書いています。

Remedies for Constipation

One of the traditional remedies has been the use of prune juice. This is not recommended on a long term basis because it acts as a mild laxative and the intestines become dependent on it to function properly. To eliminate your constipation problem the intestines must function properly on their own. Use of prune juice doesn't allow this to happen.

A ham sandwich is better than eternal happiness.

今 "Logic Made Easy (How to know when language deceives you)" by Deborah J. Bennettと言う論理学入門書を読んでいますが、面白い記述がありました。

1) A is better than B.
2) B is better than C.
3) Therefore, A is better than C.

と言う三段論法がある場合、３）の結論は正しいようですね。
それでは次はどうでしょうか？

A ham sandwich is better than nothing.

Nothing is better than eternal happiness.

Therefore, a ham sandwich is better than eternal happiness.

これが真実ならハムサンドイッチが好きな人ほど幸せな人はいないですね。
