今日の単語は以前にも調べた事があるのですが、Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?を読んでいる時には思い出せなかったのでまた辞書を引いてしまいました。

分からなかったのは "cotton" の動詞の意味です。
・Macmillan Dictionary: cotton to someone/something to begin to like someone or something: I didn’t cotton to him at first.
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary:
1: to take a liking ?used with to: cottons to people easily
2: to come to understand ?used with to or on to: cottoned on to the fact that our children work furiously
前回取り上げたのは "cotton on to" の "to come to understand" の例で、今回の "cottoned to" とは意味が違いましたね。 でも、分かる、理解するのと好きになる事に共通点があるのも良く分かります。
Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?を読んでいます。MARTHAとGEORGEはパーティから帰宅し、今は午前２時ですが、MARTHAはパーティで知り合った若い夫婦を自宅に呼んでいると言う。
MARTHA: They'll be here!
GEORGE: I wish you'd tell me about something sometime....I wish you'd stop springing things on me all the time.
MARTHA: I don't spring things on you all the time.

最後に出てきた "put-upon pie" がさっぱり分かりません。
"put-upon pie" は辞書には出ていませんが、"put-upon" 次ぎの様に載っています。

次に "pie" に人の意味として使われる事があるか調べましたが、辞書には載っていません。 しかたなくGoogleで "put-upon pie" を検索すると、"Poor Georgie-Porgie, put-upon pie" の台詞は次ぎのNursery rhymeから来ていることが分かりました。
Georgie Porgie, Puddin' and Pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play
Georgie Porgie ran away.
"Puddin' and Pie" が "put-upon pie" に変えられたのですね。そしてMARTHAは辞書にある "put-upon" の意味を使っているのでしょう。
Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albeeを読む事にしました。 これも題名は聞いたことはありますが、何の話だか全く知りません。題名を良く見ると "Virginia Woolf" のスペルです、私はてっきり "Virginia Wolf" だと思っていましたので拍子抜けです。 さて、図書館から本を借りて中を見ると劇の台本（の形式）でした。登場人物の多い小説だと誰が誰だか分からなくなって困る事が多いのですが、この本は最初に登場人物のリストがあります。

MARTHA, a large, boisterous woman, 52, looking somewhat younger. Ample, but not fleshy
GEORGE, her husband, 46. Thin; hair going grey
HONEY, 26, a petite blonde girl, rather plain

たった二組の夫婦ですか、これなら私でも余り誰が誰だか悩まずに済みそうです。NICKは "well-put-together" とあり、恐らく引き締まった体つきの事を意味していると推測しますが、確信はないので辞書で確認します。ハイフンで繋がれた表現は辞書に出ていない場合が多いので嫌な予感がしたのですが、"well-put-together" も "put-together" は辞書には載っていません。 "put together" は辞書に載っていますが、人物の状態（外観、性格など）を表す表現ではありません。 "together" だけで辞書をよく見ると次ぎの様な説明を見つけました。
・Macmillan Dictionary: confident, sensible, and clear about what you are doing: Jim’s a really together person.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: organized, confident of your abilities and able to use them to achieve what you want: He's strikes me as a fairly together sort of a guy.
・Wiktionary: (colloquial) well organized, well developed: He’s really together
"well-put-together" の "together" がこの意味だとすると私の推測ははずれで.、NICKの見かけではなく性格の説明となります。
Googleで "well-put-together" を検索すると、この意味を質問している人やその回答がぞろぞろ出てきます。女性に対する形容としてはファッショナブルの意味もあるようです。 余り信頼に足る情報はなかったのでGoogle上の素人の説明を引用するのは止めておきます。
NICKが "well-put-together" と言うのはやはり性格の事を意味しているのでしょう。
Reader's Digest 4月号にBored of the Rings? と題された、最近のオリンピック種目の中にスポーツとして適当ではない競技がある、あるいはやり方の改善が必要と主張する記事があり、その中のLet's get rid of...の種目としてSYNCHRONISED SWIMMINGが入っていて次ぎのような事が書かれていました。
Come on, this isn't a sport. Putting on make-up, choosing a glittery swimming costume and smiling should all be irrelevant to Olympic competition.
シンクロがオリンピックの種目に不適かどうかは別として、シンクロ選手の派手な化粧には私もあきれています。
そもそも、女性が日常付け睫毛を付ける事自体私には理解不能で、目が小さな日本人が付け睫毛しても目が大きく見える、あるいは綺麗に見える様になる訳ではありません。私にはただ不自然で滑稽に見えるだけです。
廃止すべきスポーツとして同じ記事の中にDRESSAGEもリストされていました。

"dressage" が何だか知らなかったのですが、この文で馬術あるいは馬術の一種である事が分かります。辞書で確認します。

1.the method of training a horse to perform manoeuvres in response to the rider's body signals
2.the manoeuvres performed by a horse trained in this method
Example: Unless you intend to specialize in showjumping, dressage etc, then it is likely you will be buying a general-purpose saddle.
百科辞典のブリタニカに簡潔な説明があったのでそれも引用しておきます。

日本では馬に乗れる人は非常に限られているので今年のオリンピックの "dressage" の選手は７１歳の法華津寛さんと言うことで話題になっていますね。

１のジョークよりはちょっとましかな。 次ぎのはちょっと長いけれど結構良く出来ていると思います。
その３：
One morning, Kevin wakes up to find his dog dead, lying next to his bed. He can't quite believe it, so decides to take him to the vet. The Vet takes one look at the dog and says, "Kevin, I'm truly sorry, but your dog is dead."
"No. He can't be dead. I demand a second opinion!" replies Kevin.
The doctor nods and agrees. He goes into the back room and brings out a cat. The cat jumps all over the dog, bites it, looks at the vet and says, "Meow."
The vet again says, "I'm sorry but your dog is truly dead."
Kevin says, "No!, I don't believe it, I want another opinion."
The vet nods and brings out a Labrador Retriever, which then begins to jump all over the dead dog, tugging at it before barking, "Woof roof woof!"
The vet says, "Sir, your dog is dead. That will be 400 dollars."
" to tell me my dog is dead?" asks Kevin.
"Well," the vet replies, "I charge 50 dollars, the cat scan is 200 and the lab test is 150 dollars..."
洒落が二つあったのが分かりました？
今日取り上げる表現 "put out" は以前にも調べた事がある表現ですが、こんな簡単に見える口語表現のイデオムも私にとっては難しい単語と同様に意味が分からない事がよくあります。 この表現が出てくる場面を次に引用します。
I introduced myself. "Look, I'm just passing through. The woman in the bar told me about you and, well, I couldn't contain my curiousty. I just didn't believe that there's a flying psychotherapist."
He did not seem at all put out. "Not many people know about this service," he said.
"put out"の意味の復習は以前に引用したのとは別の辞書と例文を使います。
・Macmillan Dictionary: annoyed, offended, or upset by something that someone has said or done: She was feeling extremely put out by his rudeness.
・Wiktionary: Taking offense; indignant: He was put out at the mere suggestion of misconduct.
さて、小説の舞台はオーストラリアで、話の主人公が車でAdelaideからAlice Springに旅行している最中の出来事を書いたものですが、たまたま記事を読んだ日にNHKのTV番組の世界街歩きでAlice Springが舞台になっていました。個人の裏庭にカンガルーやワラビーが訪れると言うオーストラリアらしい土地でした。この作家の他の探偵小説も読みたくなりましたが、残念ながら我が区の図書館には全く彼の作品は置いてありませんでした。

"uncalled for" の意味がピンときませんでした。直ぐに辞書を見ます。

なるほどと思うと同時に植木等を思い出しました。 「お呼びでない」と似てますね。

The updated version of "Get a room", a phrase provoked by overly intimate public displays of affection. As Urban-Dictionary.com note, the correct response to couples posting mushy or suggestive messages on one another's Facebook walls for all their contacts to see is, "Get an inbox already!"
"Get a room" の現代版として "Get an inbox already!" が出てきたとの記事で、意味も出ているのですが、今ひとつピントこないので調べます。 もっともこの手の口語的な表現は辞書では中々分からないのですが、私もスラングを調べる時に使っているUrban-Dictionary.comの名前が出ているので "Get a room" の項目もそこにあるでしょう。Urban Dictionaryを見てみると幾つも説明がありましたがその内の二つを引用します。
＊A comment one says in order to express the disapproval of sexual acts in the presence of others. Poking fun at lovers doings sexual acts in public.: "Dude, Ben and Misty are all over each other. They should get a room."
＊Expression used to make fun of couples who are overly (and inapropriately) affectionate in public, and hopefully get them to stop. Sometimes used to poke fun at friends who aren't together but always argue and tease each other in front of their other friends, by implying they act just like a couple.: "Look at Jim and Mary makeing out in public again. Get a room already!": After listening to David and Sandy banter back and forth for 30 minutes. "Oh get a room you two!"
Dictionary.comにも "Get a room"の簡単な説明が次ぎの様に出ていました。

なるほど "Get a room"の使用法が良く分かりました。東京でもたまに "Get a room" と言いたい光景を目にしますね。
Reader's DigestのHere & Nowは流行や話題になっている事を取り上げるコーナーで 4月号は Amazing labyrinthsを取り上げていました。 その記事の一部を抜粋します。

"Cashed-up" の意味が分かりそうで分かりません。 辞書で調べます。ハイフンで繋がれた言葉はOneLookの辞書検索では何も見つからない場合が多く、今回も何も出てきませんでしたが、Urban Dictionaryには "cashed-up" の項目があり次ぎの説明がありました。
"cashed-up": v. having a lot of cash to spend: Usually referring to "cashed-up bogans": members of the great unwashed who have come into money and are moving up in society by buying a house in a more upmarket suburb. Unfortunately, you can take the boy from Balga, but you can't take Balga from the boy.: The cashed-up bogans are taking over the neighbourhood: it's time to move house.
v.とありますが例文の "Cashed-up" は動詞としての用法ではありません。Reader's Digestの記事と同じく形容詞としての用例です。 そして、Collins English Dictionaryに "cashed up" に "Austral informal: having plenty of money" の説明があるのを見つけました。
Reader's Digestのこの記事の執筆者がオーストラリア人かどうかは分かりませんが、記事での意味はこの意味であっている様です。
May 11, 2012のThe Japan Times Onlineの記事タイトル Tiger fugu lunker caught off Yamaguchi の "lunker" が気になりました。記事を読むと：
・An unusually big tiger puffer fish, weighing 6.1 kg, was caught Monday in the Seto Inland Sea, Yamaguchi Prefecture's fisheries research center said Wednesday.
...
・A researcher at the center said the fish may be one of the largest of its kind farmed and released into the sea.
とあり、非常に大きなトラフグを捕獲した記事なので、"lunker" は大きい事と関係がありそうです。 辞書で確認します。
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: something large of its kind ?used especially of a game fish
・Dictionary.com:
1. something unusually large for its kind.
2. Angling . a very large game fish, especially a bass.
Examples: Most fishing forecasters use sunup and sundown times to predict the best odds for landing a lunker.: The ice-fishing season for lake sturgeon is more about getting together and fishing together than harvesting a lunker.
"lank" がひょろ長い意味を持つので発音の区別が苦手は私としては不思議な気がします。
大きいと言っても魚に対して使う言葉なので、"lunker" でトラフグを思い起こす様にしましょう。
