nip and tuck

"Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" からの一節です。
"..., he altered the brand's image with a few language nips and tucks."
nipもtuckも知らない単語ではありませんが、この言い方はイデオムの匂いがします。
そこで辞書です。
COED
adverb & adjective: closely contested; neck and neck.
noun informal: a cosmetic surgical operation.
nipとtuckを顔に施すことからこの名詞意味ができたのは容易に想像できますが、名詞/形容詞の方の意味は語呂がneck and neckと似ていないことは無いのですが何故この様なイデオムの意味が生まれたのか不思議です。他の辞書も見てみました。

語源に触れている辞書は見つかりませんでしたが The Free Dictionary には次ぎ意味も掲載してありました。
small changes or reductions made in order to improve something. A nip and a tuck in their household budget would give them the extra money they need.
冒頭に引用した文での "nips and tucks" の意味はこれが一番近いですね。　それに"nip and tuck" あるいは "nips and tucks" が追いつ抜かれつの勝負を意味する場合でもその差は僅かなものなので意味としては共通なものがあるなと勝手に納得することにします。

bespectacled

"bespectacled" この言葉も "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" で初めて見ました。その一文です：
A bespectacled, business-suited woman is pumping one fist-clenched arm hard; the other is grasping a report.
Dictionary.com の説明はごく簡単に "wearing eyeglasses" とあります。OneLook Quick Definitions はもう少し丁寧に "wearing, or having the face adorned with, eyeglasses or an eyeglass" (Example: "A bespectacled grandmother") と書いてありました。そう言えば日本では見たことはありませんが、西洋の映画でレンズが一つのメガネを掛けている、あるいは手で持って使っている人を見たことがあります。メガネは社会人になってから、英語は中学以来の何十年の付き合いですが "bespectacled" に会ったのはこれが初めてです。英語の付き合いは長いが浅かったと言う事でしょうね。

suds

The Japan Times Online, June 12にこんな記事タイトルがありました。
Suds shipments soured 1.9% in May
"Suds" が分からなくても本文を読み進むと意味は直ぐに見当が付きます。
Japan's domestic shipments of beer and beerlike alcoholic drinks in May fell 1.9 percent from a year earlier, down for the third straight month, despite strong sales of cheaper "third category" beer, an industry body said Wednesday.
出荷が1.9%落ち込んだのは "beer and beerlike alcoholic drinks" と書かれているのでそれが "Suds" なのですね。ここで "suds"（"sud" ではありません）を辞書(Dictionary.com)で引いて見ます。名詞で 1. Soapy water 2. Foam; lather 3. (Slang) Beer とありました。スラングとしてビールの意味ですが、OneLook Quick Definitions にはもっと詳しい説明がありました。
a dysphemism for beer (especially for lager that effervesces)
難しい言葉が使用されていますが、 "dysphemism" は侮辱表現、もしくは不快感の伴わない語を不快な語に置き換えて使うこと、"effervesces" は（炭酸水などが）泡立つの意味です。つまり出荷量が落ち込んだので、目立ちたがり屋のニュースタイトルには "beer" ではなく "suds" を使ったのですね。それにしても飲むなら "suds" ではなく "beer" に限りますね。

trailer

"Slam Dunks and No-Brainers"　は言葉の宝庫です。お陰でブログのネタに困りません。今日も知っているけれど意味の分からない単語に会いました。　
There are no rules in making trailers, but it's still valid to say that the exclamation Yesss! with the arm gesture is as excited and as positive a thing as you can do.
文中の "trailers" は車で引かれるトレイラーの事ではありません。そこで辞書です。OneLook Quick Definitionsにある説明です： an advertisement consisting of short scenes from a motion picture that will appear in the near future
なるほど映画の予告編の事ですね。映画好きには常識の言葉かな？

reel

真空管のＦＭラジオを作る電気少年だった子供の頃から秋葉原には良く行きましたが、最近は滅多に行かなくなりました。今年買った電子辞書も昨年秋に買い換えたＰＣも昔なら秋葉原に行って買うところですが、インターネット通販で購入しました。そのせいでメイドカフェーも恐ろしい通り魔事件もニュースで知っているだけです。The Japan Times Online, June 10の記事からです。
The nation reels from the deadly mayhem waged by a 25-year-old man who ran down several people with a truck and then proceeded to fatally stab others in Tokyo's densely crowded Akihabara electronics district, killing seven, after posting his intentions on a Web site.
"reel" で思い浮かべるのは釣りのリールで、動詞としても「糸を巻く」とか「手繰り寄せる」様な意味しか知りません。上の記事の "reels" には別の意味があるに違いません。そこで辞書を引きます。(Dictionary.com)
1. to sway or rock under a blow, shock, etc.: The boxer reeled and fell.
2. to waver or fall back: The troops reeled and then ran.
3. to sway about in standing or walking, as from dizziness, intoxication, etc.; stagger.
4. to turn round and round; whirl.
5. to have a sensation of whirling: His brain reeled.
記事の "reels" は5.に最も近く、（国民が）「動揺した」との意味で使われたと思いますが、被害にあった人たちにとっては1.だった訳で、新聞記事では両方の意味を掛けているのでしょう。

笑辞苑

朝日出版社が発行しているメルマガ、笑える英語の実践講座（http://www.asahipress.com/eeclub/mm.html）は結構面白いので紹介します。
June 10は笑辞苑と題した笑いの英英辞典でした。
1. blazer： a jacket that is always on fire.
2. bulldozer： a sleepy male cow.
3. carpet： a dog that lives in a car.
4. fjord： a Norwegian car.
5. grammar： a female grandparent.
笑えますね。

latitude

今日も "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" からの単語です。私の知っている "latitude" は「緯度」の意味だけですが次ぎの文にある "latitude" は「緯度」では意味が通じません。
By the time a film reaches a commercial editor or producer who cuts and pastes it into an ad, the formulas have so thickened that thery leave little or no creative latitude.
そこで辞書を引きます。Dictionary.com: freedom from narrow restrictions; freedom of action, opinion, etc.: He allowed his children a fair amount of latitude.
何事も窮屈なのは疲れるし、苦しいので自由、許容範囲、許容度があるって事は大事ですよね。

constitutional

メルマガのAracaMax Vocabularyでとりあげる単語は難しい言葉が多く、いつも流し読みでたまにしか気にしないのですが先日取り上げられた単語("constitutional")は知っている単語なのですが、説明に書かれている意味が私の知っている意味「憲法上の」とは全然関係ない様なので引っ掛かりました。
constitutional - A walk taken for one's health.
例文：　"A wise physician does not simply give a tonic for a diseased limb, or a high fever; the patient might be dead before the constitutional remedy could become effective." -- Charles Waddell Chesnutt, 'The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories'
そこで辞書(OneLook Quick Definitions)を見ると、何と最初に出てくる説明は：（名）a regular walk taken as a form of exercise 、(形) of benefit to or intended to benefit your physical makeup (Example: "Constitutional walk")
もちろんその後に、私の知っている意味：
(形) of or relating to a constitution (例: "Constitutional amendments")
(形) sanctioned by or consistent with or operating under a constitution (例: "The constitutional right of free speech")
もありましたが、第一義の意味を何故これまで知らなかったのか不思議です。これがネイティブとノンネイティブの違いの一つなのでしょう。

averse

"averse" この単語も何故か私を嫌っているようで、何度も見かける単語ですが中々意味を憶えられません。 "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" に出てきたのですが引用文が長くなるので辞書の例文を借ります。
1. She is averse to our plan.
2. I wouldn't be averse to going out with my kids.
3. People are generally averse to risk, preferring to avoid change.
辞書を引くと： Having a feeling of opposition, distaste, or aversion; strongly disinclined: investors who are averse to taking risks. ああそうかと思い出すのですが、いつもこの繰り返しです。でも今日は "averse" の動詞形 "avert" と語源が同じことに気が付きやっと憶えられそうです。ラテン語の "āversus" が語源で turned away を意味しているとあり、類語は divert, convert とありました。　
She averted her glance from an ugly sight.
A border confrontation with the country was narrowly averted.
この単語が私を嫌っていたのは当然ですね。 私から turned away してたのですから。

rocket scientist

5月31日のAsahi Weeklyの一口メモで取り上げた単語は "rocket scientist" 「頭の切れる人、優秀な人」で、北京五輪の聖火がエベレスト登頂に成功したことを伝えるAP 通信の記事から次ぎの文を引用していました。
The team used torches designed by rocket scientists.
私が今読んでいる "Slam Dunks and No-Brainers" にも "rocket scientist" が使われている文がありました。
It's very easy. It's something you don't have to be a rocket scientist to do so.
"rocket scientist" の意味として辞書にはもちろん "an engineer who builds and tests rockets" もありますが、ロケット科学者は世の中に大勢はいないので "An extremely intelligent person." としての意味で使われる場合の方が多いようです。物を作っている訳ではなく人のお金で自分の資産を増やすマジシャンのような金融業界には "rocket scientist" がいても不思議ではないですね。
If an investment firm hires a PhD student with a background in theoretical physics to create a model that prices futures and options, that person would be considered a "rocket scientist" by the traders in the investment firm because of the complexity and skill required to create these models that help traders of futures and options.
