以前 bling,Blinglish について書きましたが、"bling" は形容詞・動詞にもなった様です。

"blinged out" で検索する(googled)とiPodの宣伝文句、Macworld: Blinged out iPhone Cases も在りました。
A dictionary of Slangによる "bling up" の説明は: Verb. To make showy and visually ostentatious. E.g."I blinged up my car so that I'd get some female attention." とありました。
「ミトコンドリアが進化を決めた」（原題 POWER, SEX, SUICIDE Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life, by Nick Lane を読みました。 生命の起源、進化の謎は誰でも興味のあることだと思いますが、先日ちょっと触れたダーウィンの進化論以外の事はほとんど知識がなく、この本の事を新聞の書評かなにかで知った時に直ぐに読みたいと思いました。面白い、けれど素人には難しい、でも興味が湧く内容なので最後まで読めました。
ミトコンドリアが身体の中でエネルギー発生に関わっている事は知っていましたが、ミトコンドリアが細胞内に共生することにより生物の驚異的な進化が始まり、性の起源、老化の原因に全て関係しているとは驚きです。
ところで日本語ではミトコンドリアと言いますが英語では "mitochondria" をマイトコンドリアと発音する様です。（アクセントは単複共 "chon" にあります。）また、"mitochondria" は複数形で単数形は "mitochondrion" である事をオンラインのMerriam-Websterで確認しました。Merriam-Websterの "mitochondria" の説明です：

この説明にあるorganelles 細胞小器官、eukaryotes 真核生物などの単語は日本語でも普通は使わない単語なのでこの手の本は中々とっつき難いのですが、「ミトコンドリアが進化を決めた」はお薦めの本です。

前の職場は法務部だったのですが、その前は主にマーケティングの仕事をしていました。と言ってもマーケティングの勉強をした事がある訳でもないし、日本の会社ですから部門名にマーケティングが付いている訳でもありません。外資系や大企業とは違ってマーケティングの専門部門ではなく営業部の中でマーケティングをしていたのですが、やり方はそれまでの営業経験に基づいた方法で行うマーケティングです。以前英会話サークルEC88の中のマーケティング・グループに入っていましてEssentials Of Marketingと言う米国の大学生が使うマーケティングの基礎テキストでマーケティングの基礎を勉強する機会がありましたので今では一応マーケティングの基本的な事は知っているつもりです。（EC88/TMSリーダーのHさん、お世話になりました。私は今はほとんど顔を出しませんが、EC88/TMSは現在でも毎週金曜の夜勉強会を開いています。興味のある方はこのマーケティング・グループにリンクを貼ってあるのでそちらを見てください。）
前置きが長くなりましたが、最近目にした新しいマーケティング用語がありましたので紹介します。
"viral marketing"：

口コミが思い浮かびますね。

やっぱり、昔は日本ではマーケティングなる言葉はなかったけれど、商売・営業でマーケティングはしていました。米国人は色々な事を体系づけたり、新語をつくるのに長けていますね。
使われている単語の意味が通常の意味とは異なっている場合に、その単語を引用符で囲む事は知っていましたが、その引用符を "scare quotes" と呼ぶことをメルマガのNative Eigo-jukuで初めて知りました。
以下はそのメルマガからの引用です。
Scare quotes: Apart from indicating borrowed words, quotation marks also highlight the paradoxical use of some words. A word or phrase is sometimes enclosed in quotation marks for emphasizing that those words don't actually mean what they say. Quotation marks used in this way are known as scare quotes.

オンライン辞書検索のOneLookでは最初に出てくるOxfordとかMerriam-Webster等はリストに表れませんでしたが、上の例で示すようにメージャーではない（オンライン辞書のみの辞書）１０の辞書が検索結果にありました。
本音と建前は日本人特有の行動・態度だと指摘する知識人が多いのですが（通訳ガイドの受験勉強で読んだ日本文化等々に関するほとんどの本に書かれていました）、私はそんな事は無い、「日本人でそれを主張しているなら日本や日本人の特異な点を（多くの場合単に西洋文化と比較しただけの場合が多い）自慢したがる人の悪い習性で、もし外国人が指摘しているのだとしたら、自国には本音と建前と区別するような二枚舌のような言動はないとしているその事自体が建前だと言うのに気が付いていないだけ」と思います。考えて見て下さい、政治家の言うことを、どこの国の政治家も本心だけを言っていないのは常識ですよね。政治家は特別な人種だからと言う見方もできますが、では普通の人は本音と建前はないのでしょうか？ 分かり易い例として、米国人が贈り物をもらった際にはたとえ気に入らない物だったとしても、必ず大喜びをし、これは欲しかったものだとか、素晴らしいとかの表現を言葉で表します。これは本音と建前の問題ではなくマナーの問題だと弁護する方もいるでしょうが、確かにマナーとして米国人は「嘘も方便」のお礼を言っているのでしょう。しかし、これは米国人にも本音と建前の考え方がある事を示していると思います。本音と建前を直接表す英語表現はないようですが、少なくとも "officially" に「公式には」の他に「表向きは」、「実情とは異なるが表向きは」の意味がある事に気が付きました。

新しい仕事に付いて３ヶ月近くになりますが、顧客をサポートする立場なのに、取り扱っている製品の詳しい事がまだまだ分からず、難しい問い合わせが無いようにと毎日祈っております。でも、先週製品（ソフトウェア）のバグが報告され、調べて見るとオリジナルの英語版では発生しないバグである事が分かったので、バグが発生する処理に対応するプログラムの部品(DLLの拡張子が付くプログラム）を前任者から教えてもらった日本語化（英語版のソフトウェアを日本語化したり、日本語版のマニュアルを作るのが私の仕事の一部です）の方法で作り直したところトラプルは解消しメデタシメデタシとなりました。新しい職場で初めてのまともな仕事ができました。新しい仕事などを直ぐにこなす事を "hit the ground running" と言うそうですが、残念ながら私の場合は "Far from hitting the ground running." であります。
"hit the ground running"の表現を電子辞書ロングマンで見ると：

と書いてありました。ついでのオンライン辞書のTheFreeDictionaryを見ると：

お彼岸なので墓参りに行って来ました。父の墓は高尾、母の墓は千葉県の勝田台にあるので一度に両方行くのは大変ですが彼岸の中日が雨だったので今日一気に行って来ました。どちらの墓も宗教とは関係のない霊園にありますが、たまたま図書館から借りていた「日本の１０大新宗教」（島田裕巳著）を行き帰りに読みました。新宗教と言うのはほとんど何らかの元の宗教があり、それが分派してできるものなのですね。それにしてもこれらの新宗教が全て数万から数百万もの信者を抱えているとは驚きです。この本に書かれている宗教で全く名前も聞いたことのないものがありましたが、昔一時千葉県の野田市運河という所に一年程住んでいたことがあるので知った霊波の光と言う新興宗教については全く記述がなかったのが意外です。初めて運河に行った時にに立派な天守閣のある城を見かけびっくりしました。こんな所に城があるなんて、ここは何藩だったけ？ しかし、日曜日になると信者が大勢その城に向かって集まってくるので、この城の天守閣のように見える建物は宗教施設だと判った次第です。全国に支部もあるようだし、TVや電車などでも宣伝している様なので、信者数はやはり少なく見ても数万とか数十万はいそうです。著者の島田氏によるとオウムを含めカルトは新興宗教に含めないとのことなので霊波の光はカルトなのかなと推測しますが、私からすれば新興宗教もカルトも同じ穴のムジナと思いますが。宗教では "God created man." と主張するようですが、私は "Human being created gods." と思っています。「日本の１０大新宗教」を読んで益々その考えに確信を持ちました。従って神(gods）は色々あって、またいたるところにいるので、神のいない世界（世間と言った方が正確ですが）を探す方が難しいと思うのですが、次ぎの話はその神がどこかに行ってしまった様です。
