broker and broach

"broker" の語源についてメルマガ "ArcaMax" で次ぎのような説明がありました。
If your stock broker hits a homerun -- good luck with that, these days! -- you might just celebrate with champagne. That's appropriate, for the word "broker" derives from the French "brokiere," someone who broached or opened a bottle of wine. "Brokiere" entered English as "broker, which eventually became a general term for salesman or intermediary
この説明にある　"broach" は１年半程前に "brooches and broaches".と題して話題にしましたが再度 "broach" を辞書で見ると(Dictionary.com): to mention or suggest for the first time;
to draw (beer, liquor, etc.), as by tapping: to broach beer from a keg とありました。後者の意味はThe American Heritage Dictionaryではもっと分かり易くTo pierce in order to draw off liquid: broach a keg of beer; To draw off (a liquid) by piercing a hole in a cask or other container.
それにしても"broker" と "broach" にこんな共通点があるなんて面白い話ですね。

fickle

独立宣言も終え "Ben and Me" も終わりに近づいてきました。
At the first sight of the lavish refreshments spread out in the adjoining rooms his fickle Revolutionists dropped their weapons and rushed for the food.
いつもの様にDictionary.comを見ます。
1. likely to change, esp. due to caprice, irresolution, or instability; casually changeable: fickle weather.
2. not constant or loyal in affections: a fickle lover.
前に書いたことがありますが以前米国に駐在していた頃ＧＭのCapriceに乗っていたので "fickle" も覚えられそうです。

officious

メルマガ "ArcaMax" でOctober 3, 2008に配信された単語 "officious" についてです。
officious uh-FISH-uhs (adjective) - Marked by excessive eagerness in offering services or advice where they are neither requested nor needed; meddlesome.
例文と語源が続きます。
"Anotherofficious-looking woman, who looked remarkably like the firstofficious-looking woman, down to the little chain on her reading glasses, had him sit down across from her while she looked at Jody's papers and ignored him." -- Christopher Moore,'Bloodsucking Fiends'
Officious comes from Latin officiosus, obliging, dutiful, from officium, dutiful action, sense of duty, official employment, from opus, a work, labor + -ficere, combining form of facere, to do, to make. It is related to official, of or pertaining to an office or public trust.
officialと親戚であることは容易に想像がつきますので　officilalに束縛されたり規制されたりする事は "officious" な事でもあると覚えておけば良いかな。

pull one's forelock

"Ben and Me"に出てきた連語ですがこれも憶えておきたい表現です。
A grizzled old bosun pulled his forelock.
"forelock" には前髪（the lock of hair that grows from the fore part of the head.）の意味がありますが引用文の "pulled his forelock" は前髪を引っ張るとは思えません。
ほとんどの場合OneLookで検索すれば単語でも連語でも幾つもの辞書がリストされるのですが "pull one's forelock" にはたどり着けません。
やっと見つかったのが次ぎの二つの辞書の説明です。
COED: PHRASES touch (or tug) one’s forelock raise a hand to one’s forehead in deference to a person of higher social rank.
Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary: to show respect to someone in a higher position than you in a way that seems old-fashioned
そこで手元にある電子辞書のOEDを見ると：
touch (or tug) one’s forelock: Brit. raise a hand to one's forehead in defrence when meeting a person of higher social rank と当然ながらオンラインのCOEDとほぼ同じ説明がありました。 またOALDには to show too much respect for sb, especially because you are anxious about what they think of you. と載っていました。　"pull one's forelock " の説明は見つかりませんでしたが
　"touch/tug one’s forelock" と同じ意味でしょう。

testy/testily

午前中二年振りに江戸川マラソン大会（と言っても10kmランです）に参加して来ましたが、余り練習をしなかったので自己最低記録でした。　来月は江東区で開かれるハーフマラソンがあるので何とか時間を見つけて練習し、今度は自己最高記録で走りたいと思うものの結局前の週にちょっとジョッギングするだけになるのでしょうね。
さて、本題に入ります。　 "Ben and Me" は小学生向けの伝記読み物ですが結構知らない単語が多いので勉強になります。（自分の語彙の少なさに嫌気が差すと言いたいところですが、ブログに書くネタが多くて良い本だと前向きに考えることにします。）
"Don't bother me," I snapped testily, "I have no time for mincing popinjays, I'm busy."
"mincing"(speaking in an affected way) "popinjays"(a vain and talkative person) も知らない単語ですが、"testily" の意味を覚えたい。　"testily" を辞書で引くと　"testily" は副詞で、"testy" と言う形容詞がある事が分かりその意味を見るとThe American Heritage Dictionary：　Irritated, impatient, or exasperated; peevish: a testy cab driver; a testy refusal to help.
WordNetには "testily" でも意味が載っていました： in a petulant manner; "he said testily; 'Go away!'"

bereft/bereaved

これも "Ben and Me" からです。　どうも必須単語の匂いがしますが私の語彙にはもれていました。
"Oh, Monsieur Amos," she said softly, "could you but accomplish this, what happiness would you bring to a bereft family."
辞書を引きます。　形容詞の意味・用法がDictionary.comには:　deprived: 例： They are bereft of their senses. 例: He is bereft of all happiness.
OneLook Quick Definitionsには unhappy in love; suffering from unrequited love; sorrowful through loss or deprivation 例: bereft of all hope
が出ていましたが "bereft" は元々 "bereave" と言う動詞の過去及び過去分詞なので "bereave" もDictionary.comを見ると：
1. to deprive and make desolate, esp. by death (usually fol. by of): Illness bereaved them of their mother.
2. to deprive ruthlessly or by force (usually fol. by of): The war bereaved them of their home.
とあるように "bereave" の過去・過去分詞は "bereaved" もあります。
"bereft" と "bereave" に違い、使用頻度の差があるのか気になったので幾つか別の辞書を見ると Online Etymology Dictionaryに次ぎの説明がありました。
Since c.1650, mostly in ref. to life, hope, loved ones, and other immaterial possessions. Past tense forms bereaved and bereft have co-existed since 14c., now slightly differentiated in meaning, the former applied to loss of loved ones, the latter to circumstances.
またWebster's Revised Unabridged Dictionaryには：form bereaved is not used in reference to immaterial objects. We say bereaved or bereft by death of a relative, bereft of hope and strength.
とあります。 微妙な使い分けがあるのですね。

for fair

今日も "Ben and Me" からですが単語ではなく慣用句で知らない表現がありました。
Mr. Jefferson was a talker for fair, almost as bad as Ben, and they would never have made any progress had it not been for me and Ben.
早速辞書を引きます。
Dictionary.com: To the greatest or fullest extent possible: Our team was beaten for fair in that tournament.
実は先日会社を休んで東京都主催のラージボールの卓球大会に参加したのですが１勝３敗であっさりと敗退。　まさに I was beaten for fair in the tournament. でした。

brown study

ベンジャミン・フランクリンの伝記 "Ben and Me" に興味を引く言葉がありました。
Then he would go into a brown study that lasted for hours, occasionally murmuring, "I wonder, I wonder."
"brown study" とは何でしょう？　早速辞書を見ます。
Dictionary.com： deep, serious absorption in thought: Lost in a brown study, she was oblivious to the noise.
"brown study" の語源が気になり調べるとwww.word-detective.comに次ぎの説明がありました。
The key to understanding "brown study" lies in the fact that in the phrase both "brown" and "study" are used in senses now long obsolete (and antiquated even in the 19th century). "Brown study" itself is surprisingly old, dating back to the early 16th century. At that time, "brown" was a synonym for "gloomy or serious," drawing on the symbolism of its darkness much as we speak today of being "in a black mood." The noun "study" in the sense of "state of reverie or contemplation" had first appeared in the 14th century. Together, "brown study" when it first appeared meant "a state of gloomy meditation or thought." Gradually, however, the mood of "brown study" lightened somewhat, and, to the extent it is used today (which isn't often), it now means simply "a state of daydreaming or deep thought."

catcall

借りている区民農園にキャベツ、ブロッコリーとカリフラワーを植えましたがそれ以来毎週末は青虫取りで大変です。　しかし青虫は最初は小さくまた野菜と同じ色をしているので見つけ難く、週末だけで青虫を全て取ることは不可能で翌週になると葉はいたるとこら穴が開き大きくなった青虫がいっぱい見つかります。どうもこの戦いは青虫の勝ちに終わりそうです。来年は青虫に食べられない野菜を植えることにします。
次の文は小学生向けに書かれたベンジャミン・フランクリンの伝記 "Ben and Me" からです。　文の最後に野菜がでてきますが私が気になったのは猫の鳴き声です。。
The crowd agreed with jeers, catcalls and more vegetables.
"catcalls" は盛りのついた猫のうるさい鳴き声を思い起こさせますが辞書を引いてみましょう。
OneLook Quick Definitionsは簡単に "a cry expressing disapproval" と説明しています。　Dictionary.comはもっと詳しく "a shrill, whistlelike sound or loud raucous shout made to express disapproval at a theater, meeting, etc." と書いています。Synonyms は boo, hiss, jeer とありました。　いわゆるブーイングと同じですね。　引用文の最後に "more vegetables" とありますがこれはこの文の前に野菜を投げつけられた話があるのでその延長です。
最後にNathan Bailey’s Universal Etymological Dictionary from 1726 の説明も引用します。

tank

液体を貯蔵するタンクや戦車のタンクしか知らなかったのですが "tank" と言う単語は新聞記事で時々見かけます。
例えばThe Japan Times Online Oct.11の見出し：
Nikkei tanks as fear grips Asia
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index tumbles 881.06 points, or 9.6 percent, to 8,276.43, its lowest closing level since May 2003. It was its biggest one-day percentage loss since the stock market crash of October 1987.
あるいはJuly 2の例を引用します。
Sentiment tanks in latest 'tankan'
Business sentiment among large manufacturers plummeted in June for the third straight quarter, with rising oil and raw material prices gouging into profits, the latest Bank of Japan "tankan" shows.
この "tank" の意味は載っていない辞書も多いようです。

スラングとありますが経済記事の見出しでよく使われる単語なので憶えておくべきでしょう。
