coup

Reader's Digest 5月号、韓国料理の記事で "Hongeo" と言う魚（料理？）を食べている個所です。
Knowing it was an atrocious idea, I raised a slice to my nose and inhaled deeply. This was followed by a coughing fit and the inevitable "car crash" moment - taking a second inhalation of the aroma just to make sure it was still hideous.Tasting time provided something of a coup - unable to chew through the cartilage-filled flesh, I experienced my first retch of the day and in the absence of any napkins, spat a half-chewed chunk of bones into my hand.
文中の "coup" の意味として、クーデターしか知らないので、幾らなんでもそれは大げさで、単に
"yuk!" と言う感じですが、 "coup" に私の知らない意味があるに違いありません。

飲み込めなかったので "successful" とは言い難いと思いますが、臭いも悪そうで、 むせながらも口に入れられたので、記事を書いた本人としては "coup" だったと大げさに書いたのでしょう。　いずれにせよ食べてみたい魚ではありません。

roll a six

日曜日のジョッキングは久しぶりになぎさ公園経由の葛西臨海公園のコースを走りました。なぎさ公園で時計草(Pashionflower)が咲いているのに気がついたので、翌日写真を撮ってきました。
さて本来の話題に移ります。Linked by Albert-Laszlo Barabasiを読み始めました。　Notesを入れると２７９ページもあるので私にはちょっと厚めの本です。　サブタイトルに "How Everythins Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means for Business, Science, and Everyday Life" と書かれていました。
第２章(The Second Link, The Random Universe) にあった表現です。
They decided that the simplest way to create a network was to play dice: Choose two nodes and, if you roll a six, place a link between them. For any other roll of the dice, do not connect these two nodes but choose a different pair and start over.
この "roll a six" に最初は引っ掛かったのですが、直ぐ後に "roll of the dice" とあるので、サイコロを転がして６を出す意味だと分かりした。　サイコロと言うと、英語では　"The die is cast." の文しか知らないので、動詞の "roll" とサイコロが直ぐには結び付かなかったのです。　一応辞書で "roll" の項を見てみます。

・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: to assume a risk by taking action: rolled the dice when they bought those stocks

tipsy

Reader's Digest 5月号に The Fear Factor TASTING SAFARIと言う韓国の珍しい食べ物（ゲテモノと言った方が分かり易いでしょうが、ゲテモノかどうかは？）を食べる体験記がありました。　その記事に幾つか覚えたい単語があったので取り上げます。 最初の単語は出だしの文にありました。
It began as a typical tipsy conversation that most westerners living abroad have had - a theoretical safari of Seoul's markets in search of the city's most fearsome food.
"tipsy" の語呂は "topsy-turvy" を思い起させるので、真剣な会話では無いような気がしますがどうでしょう？

・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: unsteady, staggering, or foolish from the effects of liquor: I got a little tipsy at the party last night.

軽く酔う程度の様ですが、"prone to tip" とか　"tipsy boat" の例を見ると、結構酔っている気もします。

chrononaut and cryonics

Reader's Digest 5月号のWORD POWERはSFに出て来る単語の特集で、いつものように、私が知っている単語はほとんどありませんでした。　今月は次ぎの二つの単語を覚えようと思います。
chrononaut: time traveller: Who is your favourite chrononaut - Wells's Time Traveller, or Marty McFly?
cryonics: practice of freezing a dead person in hopes of later restoring life. Before Ted Williams's relatives used cryonics, they faced a legal firestorm.
この二つを選んだ理由は "chrononaut" は "chronology" の "chrono" に "astronaut" の "naut" を合成した単語で、 "cryonics" は　"cryogenic " を知っているので覚え易そうだからです。

Police arrested two kids yesterday. One was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off.

clip

"THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RING TWICE" - 弁護士のお陰でFrankとCoraの二人は結局殺人罪からは逃れる事ができたのだが、弁護士の助手だった男が、Coraが罪を全て弁護士に白状した時の陳述書を手に入れ、CoraとFrankのところにゆすりに来ます。元々ならず者のFrankは逆に暴力で元弁護士の助手を脅し、その仲間に陳述書を持って来させます。 Coraも拳銃を使い、店に来た脅迫仲間をFrankのところに連れてきます。女のCora一人で数人の男、しかも拳銃をもっていた男を相手にしているはずのなので、この辺の状況はちょっと理解に苦しみますが、次ぎの文はその時の一節です。
She went, and in a minute came back with the guns. She took out the clips, and laid them on the bed, beside me.
"clips" と言われても日本語にもなっているクリップしか知らないので意味が分かりません。なにか "clips" に日本語にもなっている単なるクリップではない意味があるのでしょう。　辞書を見ます。

・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: a device to hold cartridges for charging the magazines of some rifles; also : a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm
・Vocabulary.com: a metal frame or container holding cartridges; can be inserted into an automatic gun
なるほど、日本では拳銃などの所持は幸い禁止されているので馴染みがないはずです。　"magazine" は聞いたことのある言い方です。　いずれにせよ、小説や映画を楽しむ時にしか必要のない単語の意味ですね。
この後、Coraは妊娠している事をFrankに告白し、二人は結婚します。結婚を届けた後に海水浴に行き、今度は本当の交通事故に遭います。 Coraは事故で死にますが、Frankは以前のギリシャ人殺しがバレ、Coraの死も同じく交通事故に見せかけた殺人とされ死刑となります。 悪が滅びて安心しました。

ply

Reader's Digest 5月号のMy Storyの記事の次ぎの文に出てきた "ply" の意味を覚えたい。
Few buses plied the roads then, so whenever Mak Esah and I made our periodical visits to town to see Mother, we had to walk. I loved these walks.
もう４０年程前になりますが、秋田県の秋田プライウッドという会社にコンピュータの設置に行った時に "plywood" の "ply" の意味、"usually in combinations, one of several layers of cloth or paper or wood as in plywood" を覚えました。また工具の "plyer/plier"(A variously shaped hand tool having a pair of pivoted jaws, used for holding, bending, or cutting.) の基になった動詞だろうとの認識はありますが、記事の "plied" は "run" と同じ様な意味のようです。辞書で確認します。

・Cambridge Dictionaries Online: old-fashioned When a form of transport plies a particular route, it makes that journey regularlyHigh-speed trains regularly ply between Paris and Lyons.: This airline has been plying the transatlantic route for many years.
・American Heritage Dictionary: To traverse or sail over regularly: Trading ships plied the routes between coastal ports.
船の時代に使われるようになったようで、ちょっと古い言い方のようでもあります。

on the up-and-up

"THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RING TWICE" 裁判の結果（簡易裁判のようで、この後にも裁判が続くかどうかは不明）、Coraが夫（米国に帰化したギリシャ人）を殺したとされた。その直後にCoraとFrankが裁判所内で会話する場面です。
"We've been flim-flammed, Cora."
She didn't say anything. She just kept walking around.
"That guy Katz, he's nothing but a cop's stool. A cop sent him to me. I thought he was on the up-and-up. But we've been flim-flammed."
"flim-flammed." と　"up-and-up" を辞書で調べます。　まずは "flim-flammed." の意味です。　"flim-flammed." では普通の辞書には載っていませんでしたが、　"flimflam." は動詞と名詞として説明がありました。

次に "up-and-up" を調べます。　
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: an honest or respectable course -- used in the phrase on the up-and-up
・American Heritage Dictionary: Idioms: on the up-and-up/up and up Informal: Open and honest.
"up-and-up" だけでは使われず、 "on the up-and-up" と言う慣用句なのですね。

at loggerheads

寝る前にたまに読むだけなので、遅々として進まない "A History of Western Society" ですが、ようやく冷戦の時代に入りました。　今日覚えたいフレーズはその節の冒頭にありました。
In 1945 triumphant American and Russian soldiers came together and embraced on the banks of the Elbe River in the heart of vanquished Germany. At home, in the United States and in the Soviet Union, their loved ones erupted in joyous celebration. Yet victory was flawed. The Allies could not cooperate politically when it came to peacemaking. Motivated by different goals and hounded by misunderstandings, the United States and Soviet Russia soon found themselves at loggerheads. By the end of 1947, Europe was rigidly divided. It was West versus East in the cold war.
"at loggerheads" の意味は文脈から、「仲違いして」、「対立して」の様な意味と推測できます。　"loggerhead"　もギリシャ神話にでもでていそうな単語です。　辞書で確認します。

・Wiktionary: (figuratively) unable to agree; opposing: We were really at loggerheads about what to do with the money we found on the side of the road; she said we should turn it in, I said we should set it free.

"loggerhead" 自体はギリシャ神話にはでてこないようで、亀の一種の意味があります。

cut

"THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RING TWICE"留置場での主人公 Frankと警官との会話からです。警官がFrankに話かけてきました。
"Say, You ain't supposed to have no lawyer yet. You ain't been arraigned, and you can't send for nobody. They can hold you forty-eight hours incommunicado, they call it. But if he shows up here, I got to let him see you, you get it? He might show up here, if I happened to be talking to him."
"You mean you get a cut."
"I mean he's a friend of mine. Well, if he didn't give me no cut, he wouldn't be no friend, would he? He's a great guy. He's the only one in this town can throw the headlock on Sackett."
上の会話にでてくる名詞の "cut" はどんな意味でしょうか？ 私の英語の先生、辞書に相談します。
意味が山ほど出てきますが、多分次ぎの意味とだいたい同じでしょう。
・Oxford English Dictionary: [in singular] informal a share of the profits from something: the directors are demanding their cut
・Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: a share of something, usually money: When am I going to get my cut?
・Wiktionary: A share or portion: The lawyer took a cut of the profits.
警官は弁護士をFrankに紹介して、正確に言うと弁護士に客（Frank）を紹介すると、弁護士から紹介料が貰えると言う事でしょう。
