アンが教会に行った時に野原の花を摘んで帽子に飾った事が問題になりました。アンの弁解です。

That would be terrible; I don't think I could endure it; most likely I would go into consumption; I'm so thin as it is, you see. But that would be better than being a trial to you."
"consumption" の意味として "consume" の名詞の意味しか頭に浮かんできません。　仕方が無いので辞書を見ます。

なるほど、肺結核を表す古い言葉のようです。 そう言えば昔高校生の頃にこの意味の "consumption" が副読本に出てきたような記憶がありますが記憶も "consume" したようです。

tack (2)

The Japan Times Online, Aug.27 のキャプションに赤毛のアンでも見かけた "tack"（９月１６日の日記） の単語が使われていました。　ここでの "tack" の意味はどうでしょうか？

claque

リーダーズダイジェスト8月号のWordPowerからもう一つの単語を取り上げます。
問題は "claque" は次ぎのどの意味でしょうかです。
A: people paid to applaud a show
B: group of ducks
C: windmill blade
分かりますか？　私は8月号のWordPowerに出題の単語は全て知らないものばかりだったので "claque" の意味も当然知りませんでしたが、答えがAだとすると日本語の「さくら」と共通する意味があるので面白いと思いました。　ここで取り上げていると言う事は答えはAだった訳ですが、例文として：　The board of directors always agrees with the CEO - they're his personal claque. が載っていました。 辞書で "claque" を確認します。

９月、１０月は卓球の試合が月に２～３回あるので、そうで無くともやる事が多い週末は忙しいのですが、更に今月はマンションの駐車場のスペースが空いたのを理由に家内が車を買うと言い出し、車の知識はほとんどないので、車の選択のために自動車販売会社を３件回り話を聞くなど大変でした。　会社の昼休みに英語の本が読める平日の生活が落ち着ける日々です。　昼休みに読んでいる「赤毛のアン」（Reader's Digestを図書館から借りると中断しますが、ほぼ話の半分位まで読み進みました）からの一節です。
One was of snuffy colored gingham which Marilla had been tempted to buy from a peddler the preceeding summer because it looked so serviceable; one was of black-and-white checked sateen which she had picked up at a bargain counter in the winter; and one was a stiff print of an ugly blue shade which she had purchased that week at a Carmody store.
"serviceable" 聞いたことがありそうで、初めて見る単語です。　早速辞書を見ます。

winged fruit

リーダーズダイジェストのWordPowerは毎月特定のテーマに沿った単語のクイズですが、一応ネイティブも対象にしているので難しい単語が多く、いつも３割前後しか解答できません。　8月号のテーマはHoushold Names ですが、今回は特に難しくて、知っている単語は一つもありませんでした。　しかし、出題の単語ではなく解答の説明に気になる表現がありました。　単語の問題は "samara" でその意味は次ぎのいずれかですかなのですが、
A. headscarf worn by Muslim women.
B. tile in a mosaic.
C. winged fruit of certain trees.
選択枝C.の "winged fruit" は気になりますね。　羽の生えた果物何て聞いたことはありません。　オンラインの英語辞書では残念ながら "winged fruit" の説明はどこにも見つかりませんでした。　結局Google検索で "winged fruit" は "winged seed" とも "key fruit" とも言えることが分かりました。　言い忘れるところしたが "samara" の答えは "winged fruit" です。

ring

夏野菜が終わったので先週の金曜日に春菊、小松菜と大根の種を蒔き、連休中は毎朝食事前に水をまめに撒きにいったお陰で可愛い芽が出てきました。　水撒きとは言っても片道自転車で２０分かかるので結構忙しいものですが、植物は丁寧に世話をすればその分直ぐに成果が目に見えて分かるので面倒の遣り甲斐があります。　英語も勉強をすれば直ぐにその成果が表れると良いのですが、英語は中々そうはならないですね。
さて、赤毛のアンも三分の一程進んだでしょうか。　アンが癇癪を起したことをMrs. Lyndeに謝った直後のMarillaとLyndeの受け取りを表す文章です。

この "ring" の意味は何でしょうか？　私が知っている "ring" の意味ではベルの音がもっとも近いような響きを感じますがどうでしょうか、辞書で調べます。

Laws

赤毛のアン、原題 "Anne of Green Gables" を読んでいるのですが辞書での説明が見つけられない単語が出てきました。 該当個所を示します。
"...And now may I go out into your garden and sit on that bench under the apple-trees while you and Marilla are talking? There is so much more scope for imagination out there."
"Laws, yes, run along, child. And you can pick a bouquet of them white June lilies over in the corner if you like."
最後の文にある "Laws" はちょっと前に出てきた　"Lawful heart" （http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/160557）と同様に、一種の間投詞と推測しているのですが、色々な辞書を調べたのですがそのような説明・例文は見つけられませんでした。　
いったん諦めたのですが連休で時間ができたのでこりもせず再度インターネットの辞書を色々読んでいたら、これかな思うのが見つかりました。

　"Lord" をなまったと言うか、恐れ多いので "Law" と婉曲的に言うようになったのでしょうね。何れにせよ現代人は言わない用法のようです。　引用文ではそんなに驚いた風はないような気もしますが、アンの饒舌に感心したようにも思えます。　あるいはこの婦人はこの様な間投詞を口にだすのが癖かも知れません。

sported

これもリーダーズダイジェスト8月号の@Workのコーナーにあった記事です。
My husband worked with identical twins, and the only way to tell them apart was by the goatee one of them sported.

) も面白い単語ですが意味は直ぐに想像が付くので今日取り上げる単語ではありません。　取り上げたいのは "sported" の方です。　と言っても "sport" のこの意味での用例はこれで３度目の登場です。　最初は１月 "http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/139201" で次は３月 "http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2009/3/3" でした。　イイカゲンにこの意味が直ぐ頭に浮かぶようになりたい。

暑さも和らぎ、江戸川区の10kmレースもいよいよ来月に迫ってきたので久しぶりにジョッギングをしました。　恐らく半年以上ジョッギングをしていないので、とりあえず家からの往復を含めて6km程度の新左近川親水公園を走りましたが、親水公園では彼岸花が咲いていて秋を感じました。
さて、日曜日はジョークを取り上げる日と決めているのですが、リーダーズダイジェスト６月号にあったLife It's really like that. コーナーに面白い投書がありましたのでそれを紹介します。
"Do you want to insure this? asked the clerk at the post office when I handed her my package.
"Nope," I answered.
"The contents aren't breakable."
The clerk wasn't so sure. "Ma'am, we are professionals. We can break anything."
この投書は多分かの大国での実話でしょう。
