「選ばれしエリート」が進む学校であったはずの朝大の在校生数は、最盛期の3分の1近くに、朝鮮学校全体では、6分の1、7分の1にまで激減した。　

危機感を強めた総連は硬軟両面で圧力を強め、高級学校から朝大への進学者を確保しようとやっきになっているが、今や優秀な生徒ほど朝大へは行きたがらない。

多くの日本の大学が朝鮮高級学校卒業生にも門戸を開くようになったからだ。

北朝鮮と盲従する総連に愛想を尽かし、カネもヒトも集まらなくなった中で、総連コミュニティーは細る一方だ。

今や朝鮮学校→朝大→総連コミュニティー内での就職といった「自己完結型」システムは完全に破綻しつつある。　

在日コリアンの意識も大きく変わった。

3世、4世となった世代に帰国願望などない。

日本で生まれ、将来も日本で生きてゆくだろう人々が子弟に求めているのは「北朝鮮の公民」を育てる教育ではない。

在校生数の激減という事実が「ニーズの乖離」を如実に示している。韓国系の民族学校が英語教育や受験教育に力を入れ、人気を集めているのと、いかにも対照的ではないか。　

近年しきりに朝大が打ち出している“ソフト路線”への転向も表向きに過ぎない。

朝大副学長を23年間務めた朴庸坤（パク・ヨンゴン）氏は、日本人妻と離婚することを大学から求められ、拒否すると最後まで学長になれなかった。
