The following is a continuation of an article by Shohei Nagatsuji.
The Energy Revolution is War
This year is the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The current generation of people under the age of 40 has grown up hearing about global warming caused by CO2 since they were children.
It's no wonder they fear the arrival of global warming hell.
Greta Thunberg, a representative of the youth, is probably one of them.
After Biden took office, the U.S. returned to the Paris Agreement, which it had withdrawn from under the Trump administration. It has shown its commitment to the transition to a decarbonized society.
The climate summit to be held by Mr. Biden on April 22 may be aimed at regaining control of European countries' measures and leading to a new industrial revolution in favor of the United States.
Under the Paris Agreement, which replaced the Kyoto Protocol, Japan has pledged to reduce its CO2 emissions by 26% below the FY2013 level by FY2030, but international pressure is mounting to increase this target.
Even the 6% reduction under the Kyoto Protocol was a huge challenge, so how will Japan achieve it?
Even though the economic war that sparks with CO2 has begun, Japan is now trying to attend the Climate Summit without feeling the tension.
One example of this war is the criticism of Japan's hybrid vehicles (H.V.s).
Toyota's Prius, which was introduced around the same time as adopting the Kyoto Protocol, drew worldwide attention as an environmentally friendly vehicle. Still, under the Paris Agreement, it could be eliminated by electric cars (E.V.s) as a type of gasoline vehicle.
Japan's primary industry is facing a crisis, but there is little sense of crisis.
Both the European Union (E.U.) and the United Kingdom (U.K.) have announced that they will increase the reduction of their 30-year targets. Still, both have set the base year at 1990, the same year as the Kyoto Protocol, which is favorable to both parties.
If Japan declares unreasonable reduction targets to win praise from the U.S., Europe, and other countries, it will become prey for the international community.
It is no different from a lamb going out to a wolf's barbecue party.
Japan should proceed on the path of emission reduction through technical cooperation with developing countries.
Despite the ideological "climate crisis," major countries are focusing on the development of the Arctic.
The white ice in the Arctic Ocean is the planet's cooling system. They are using the thinning ice as an opportunity to send in icebreakers to open up shipping lanes and rush to acquire undersea resources.
The desires hidden behind the noble call of "preventing global warming of the irreplaceable Earth" are now peeking out from under the sea ice.
The IPCC is also an unknown face to the development of the Arctic Ocean.
It can also smell the renewable energy industry's desires behind the opposition to H.V.s and coal-fired power generation.
Decarbonization is nothing short of an energy revolution.
Revolutions are relentless.
We can expect innovation to accompany the change, but we cannot let Japan be used as a stepping stone.
If the "climate crisis stirs us up," we will fall into an "economic crisis.
The wave of the Paris Agreement surpasses that of the Kyoto Protocol.
