twixter/kipper

朝日出版社が発行しているメルマガ「辞書にない英語で世界がわかる」の第241号に
"twixter" 「スネかじり、パラサイト」の紹介がありました。４月１１日に話題にした "tween" を思い出しますが、"twixter" は自立できないまま親元にいるヤング・アダルトのことで、国により様々な呼び方があるそうです。

・kipper 《イギリス》
・mammoni 《イタリア》
・nesthocker 《ドイツ》
辞書にない英語と言うことですが "twixter" をいつものようにOneLookで検索すると、私がいつも引用するDictionary.comの他にもWikipediaとWorld Wide Wordsに載っていることが分かります。説明がもっとも短い
"Dictionary.com" の説明は "a person stuck between childhood and the adult world, often living with parents" とありました。WikipediaとWorld Wide Wordsにはもっと詳しい説明があります。
念のためですが、メルマガが主張する「辞書にない英語」に文句をつけている訳では全くありません。メルマガの情報はとても参考になり配布を楽しみにしており、「辞書にない英語」は印刷された紙の辞書を示していると理解しております。
イギリス英語の "kipper" は紙の辞書にも載っている単語ですがそこでの説明は "a herring that has been split open, salted, and dried or smoked."(COED)あるいは "a male salmon or sea trout during or after the spawning season" のような意味だけで "twixter" と同じ意味はやはりオンライン辞書にしか載っていないようです。　以下はオンライン辞書の "kipper" の説明です。
WordSpy: An adult son or daughter, particularly one aged 30 or more, who still lives with his or her parents.
Dictionary.com: Australian Informal. a young male Aborigine, usually 14 to 16 years old, who has recently undergone his tribal initiation rite.
インターネットはやはり便利ですね。

carp

リーダーズダイジェスト４月号の人生相談のコーナー "Ask Aunty" に，別居している子供が電子メールは送ってくるが電話をかけてくれない、どうしたら子供が電話をかけてくるようになるかとの相談があり、その回答に次ぎの文がありました。
Instead of carping, phone them every few days to share an amusing anecdote, enquire about their lives, hobbies and passions, or simply to say "I love you!"
"carp" は鯉の意味しか知らないので辞書を引きます。

日本語の「小言を言う」を連想しますね。
もちろん "carp" には名詞として魚（多分これが鯉？）の意味もあることもDictionary.comで確認しました。
1. a large freshwater cyprinid fish, Cyprinus carpio, native to Asia but widely introduced in tropical and temperate waters: an important food fish in many countries.
2. any of various other fishes of the family Cyprinidae.
植物ほどは魚に興味がないので Cyprinidae が鯉なのかどうかは未確認です。

quadriplegic/quadriplegia

Asian Youth Para Gamesのボランティア募集の案内の続きで "Wheelchair Tennis" の部の説明文です。
Since the Athens Paralympics, both Quad Singles and Quad Doubles (mixed class categories for quadriplegic players) have been recognized as official events.
"Quad" には４の意味がありますが "Quad Singles/Quad Doubles" となると何でしょう？　"quadriplegic players" が行うとあるので　"quadriplegic" を辞書で見ます。

"quadriplegia" は "paralysis of all four limbs or of the entire body below the neck"
テレビのニュースで "Wheelchair Tennis" を見たことがありますが、選手達は　"quadriplegic players" なのでもテニスができるのですね。　すごい！

prostheses/prosthesis

東京都の防災ボランティアに登録している関係で９月に東京で開かれる2009年Asian Youth Para Gamesのボランティア募集の案内が来ました。　次ぎの文はその中の一文です。
When competing, many athletes with amputations employ prostheses developed specifically for use in sports.
"prostheses" は聞き慣れない言葉ですが、文の内容からして手足等の一部を無くした人がスポーツをするために付ける、例えば義足類だろうと推測できます。　辞書を引きます。
"prostheses" の単数形は "prosthesis" で、

そうか、義歯も "prosthesis" だとすると私も奥歯に銀を詰めているのでそれも "prosthesis" ですね。
MedTerms.com Medical Dictionary の説明を読むと "An auditory prosthesis is a device that substitutes for or enhances the ability to hear. It is more commonly called a hearing aid." とあります。なるほど補聴器も "prosthesis" なのですね。　そうするとメガネも "prosthesis" かな？
"A prosthesis is designed for functional or cosmetic reasons or both." となるとカツラも一種の "prosthesis" になるのでしょうね。

昨日 "flee/flea" の話を紹介しましたが、 "flea market" の起源もついでに紹介します。

言葉を覚えている最中の子供のおしゃべりは時々面白い事を言うので朝日新聞などにも子供の愉快な言葉を投書したコーナーが毎週ありますがリーダーズダイジェストにも "Kids: As Kids See it" と言う同じようなコーナーがあり次ぎの文はその４月号に掲載されていたものです。
My colleague was teaching her primary school class the bible story of Lot. "The angel told Lot to take his family and flee to the mountains and not look back," she said. "Lot and his daughters escape, but his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt."
Most of the class seemed to absorb the important moral lesson, but one child looked worried. "What happened to the flea?" he asked.
この子よりも私の場合は "free" も"flee"/"flea" の "homonym" になってしまうので困ったものです。

tryst

The Japan Times Online, May 15の記事タイトルに知らない単語がありました。
'Atami tryst' Konoike to pay train fare
つい最近マスコミを賑わしている話題のようですが確認の為に記事(http://search.japantimes.co.jp/mail/nn20090515a8.html)を読んでみます。
A Cabinet member who resigned Wednesday admitted Thursday to using a free train pass for Diet members to travel to a hot spring resort to see his mistress and offered to repay the fare, Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura said.
やはり女性問題で官房副長官を辞任した事件の報道でしたので "tryst" の意味はだいたい想像は付きますが辞書を引きます。

日本語では密会とか逢引に相当するのでしょうか？　密会/逢引は古臭い言葉に感じますがこれらに代わる新しい日本語は私は知りません。

hypnic jerk

私にも経験がありますが、数日前に家内が夜中に足がつったと大騒ぎしたばかりなので "Facts, Answers to Life's little Mysteries, What are those twitches and jerks that occasionary wake us just as we are falling asleep?" と題したリーダーズダイジェスト４月号の記事が目に留まりました。　その中の一節です。
You have been a victim of what is called a 'hypnic jerk, ' a phenomenon explained in David Bodanis's The Body Book: "They occur when nerve fibres leading to the leg, in a bundle nearly as thick as a pencil, suddenly fire in unison.
（中略）
Although some people experience them more often than others, their appearance is unpredictable, unlike myoclonic jerks - spasms that occur at regular intervals during deep sleep.
家内を襲ったのは "hypnic jerk" ですが、辞書では何と説明しているか見ます。

Hypnic jerk: The common normal phenomenon of jerking awake, usually accompanied by a feeling of falling, just as one is drifting off to sleep. Also called a sleep jerk or sleep start.
"myoclonic jerks" も辞書を引きます。
Dictionary of Cancer Terms: A sudden, brief, strong contraction of a muscle or group of muscles that cannot be controlled.
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language
myoclonus: A sudden twitching of muscles or parts of muscles, without any rhythm or pattern, occurring in various brain disorders.
後者の辞書による "myoclonic jerks" の説明はリーダーズダイジェストの記事の説明と違うので困りますが深追いは止めときます。 「足がつる」は "I got a cramp in my leg and couldn't walk." と何かの本に書いてありましたが、"jerk"、"cramp"、"twitch" は似たような意味を持つ単語のようです。　今日はとりあえず "hypnic jerk" だけ覚えることにします。

berserk and take

次ぎの文はEnglish Journal の５月号に掲載のトラベレックス社のアジア太平洋地域ディレクターMr. Graham Perryとのインタビュー記事からです。
EJ: The yen-dollar rate is going berserk.
Perry: Yes.
EJ: What do you think about that? I mean, I'm, I'm sure that some Japanese are either worried or, you know, jubiliant, um, you know, because the dollar is becoming cheaper. What...? What's your take on this?
まず "berserk" は知らない単語ですが為替相場が上下していることからして多分荒れているというような意味だと推測しますが辞書で確認します。

推測はだいたい当たっていました。　語源は北欧の伝説からきたようです。
Scandinavian Legend. Also, ber・serk・er. an ancient Norse warrior who fought with frenzied rage in battle, possibly induced by eating hallucinogenic mushrooms.
インタビュー記事の引用文最後にある　"What's your take on this?" の "take" の使い方は学校英語では習わないのでこれまた知りませんでした。　これも辞書で確認します。

2&5 and pulse

リーダーズダイジェスト４月号のRD Foodのコーナーの記事からです。
You can get your '2&5' in a variety of way. Add extra vegetables to a soup, casserole or pizza topping, add seasonal salads anf fruit on the side and choose more vegetarian-style dishes. The following is a general guide to portions:
以下の材料は９つもあったので省略し、次ぎの一つだけ紹介しますが、その前に '2&5' が何だか調べます。 '2&5' をGoogleで検索すると、最初にリストされたサイトに "Adults need to eat at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegies each day." とありました。 よく読むとこのサイトはオーストラリア政府のサイトでオーストラリアでは2005年にGo For the 2&5 Campaign. と言うのを行ったようで、"Health authorities recommend you eat at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables every day."、何故なら '2&5' は健康に良いからと主張しておりました。
ところで材料の中に：
1/2 cup cooked pulses
がありましたが、健康に関する "pulses" なら脈拍を思い起こしますが、ここでは何かの果物か野菜に違いありません。 "pulse" を辞書で調べます。

枝豆やグリーンピースのような豆の事ですね。２年前に "legume and lentil"(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2007/05/22) を話題にした事を思いました。 その時の記事に "pulse" もありましたが "legume and lentil" だけしか覚えていませんでした。今日は "pulse" も覚えよう。
