data-palooza

Reader's Digest 10月号の記事 "The Spy in Your Car" からの引用です。

For car owners, the upside of this data-palooza has come in the form of smartphone apps that allow them to check a car's location when, say, they forget where it is parked; to lock and unlock the vehicle remotely; and to turn it on or off.

be still/been stilled

Reader's Digest 10月号の記事 "Life in these United States" からの引用です。

I loved the commercials during the last Super Bowl, especially the one that recalled my youth, At one point, I texted my sons, "VW Beetles and Neil Diamond! Be still, my beating heart!"
My oldest brought me down to earth, replying, "The hearts of most of the people who loved those two have probably already been stilled."

eon

Reader's Digest 10月号の記事 "Life in these United States" からの引用です。

After standing in line at the car rental for what seemed like eons, I was told by the clerk that I would be given a free upgrade because of my wait.
Later, when I told my husband why we got a free upgrade, he seemed confused, asking, "How do they know how much you weigh?"

mansplaining/mansplain

"Why don't you write an article about mansplaining?"
"Did you know that mansplaining is a portmanteau of man and explaining and describe the act in which a man provides a condescending explanation of something to a woman who already understands it?"
"Yes."
"Well, did you know this? Women such as yourself don't much care for mansplaining."

"mansplain/mansplaining" の項目がありました。

・Merriam-Webster: (of a man) to explain something to a woman in a condescending way that assumes she has no knowledge about the topic: Try your best not to ‘mansplain’ everything and just listen to women.
・Wiktionary: To explain (something) condescendingly (to a female listener), especially to explain something the listener already knows, presuming that she has an inferior understanding of it merely because she is female.: Positioning himself as the white guy mansplaining to a black woman what’s best for her,...

cotton on

As he peered in at them, cigarette in hand, they shrank away. He remembered how Anna had accused him of treating her like a lapdog. For just a moment, he missed the smooth skin and perfect features of the woman he'd turned into the top girl at Mika. The top pet in the shop.
Anna herself had known that once she'd cottoned on to this, she would never be able to keep that position, however hard she tried. That was just the way things worked.

Oxford English Dictionary: to begin to understand or realize something without being told: I suddenly cottoned on to what he was doing.
・Collins Dictionary: If you cotton on to something, you understand it or realize it, especially without people telling you about it.: It wasn't until he started laughing that they cottoned on!
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to begin to understand a situation or fact: I'd only just cottoned on to the fact that they were having a relationship.

Collins Dictionary: If you cotton to someone or something, you start to like them.: His style of humor was very human, and that's why people cotton to him.
・Farlex Dictionary of Idioms: To like someone or something; to view someone or something favorably.: It takes me a while to cotton to new people—I have to get to know them first.

high on the hog

"Don't worry about it," Yoshie told her, patting her ample shoulder. "We all had a bad time."
"So you really got \500,000?"
"I really did," Yoshie nodded. But Kuniko noticed she avoided her eyes. She's lying, she thought.
"Then how can you afford to be living so high on the hog?"
"High on the hog? What are you talking about?" she said, astonished.
"I'm talking about all the things you've been doing. It looks to me as though you got more than \500,000."

Wiktionary: Well off; living comfortably or extravagantly due to great wealth or financial security.: Ever since his promotion, they’ve been living high on the hog.
・Merriam-Webster: in a luxurious style: Those movie stars live pretty high on the hog.
・Urban Dictionary: Living life to it's fullest extent.: I just bought a Mercedes-Benz, now I am living high on the hog.

(Phrase Finder): "The source of this phrase is often said to be the fact that the best cuts of meat on a pig come from the back and upper leg and that the wealthy ate cuts from ‘high on the hog’, while the paupers ate belly pork and trotters. ..."

God forbid

"Did you get the money?"
"I've got it right here," he said. From his back pocket he produced a brown paper bag, the kind used for penny candy. "It's exactly six million; I told them we couldn't do it unless we got the whole amount up front."
"Well done," she said. "But what happens if, God forbid, the body's found later on."
"Then we'll have to give the money back. But there are still some people who'll wind up with egg on their faces and you can be sure they'll find other ways to make me pay."

Collins Dictionary: If you say God forbid, you are expressing your hope that something will not happen.: [feelings]: If, God forbid, something goes wrong, I don't know what I would do.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: a way of saying that you hope something does not happen: If there was a fire, God forbid, we’d be able to respond to the disaster.
・Merriam-Webster: used in speech to say that one hopes a bad thing will not happen: Heaven forbid that something bad should happen.

entrails

Unfortunately, they soon realized they wouldn't be able to use the power saw Jomonji had acquired for cutting the bones. During the trial run, it sent a fine mist of bone and flesh flying in their eyes. They would need goggles if they were going to use it in the future. As the work progressed, the room became saturated with blood, and the air was filled with a foul stench from the entrails, just as had the horror associated with it was somehow less accurate.

Collins Dictionary: (plural noun) The entrails of people or animals are their inside parts, especially their intestines.: Open the belly lengthwise and remove all the entrails.
・Wiktionary: an internal organ of an animal.: Those blackguards have no more respect for an entrail, or a sinew, or a vital organ, than if they were gutting dog-fish.
・Merriam-Webster: (plural): the interior or internal parts of something: hairy entrails of the sofa
