Reader's Digest 6月号の記事 'Life in these United States' からの引用です。

My neighbor was on a mission trip to South America, so his wife attended a dinner party alone. When the woman seated next to her asked why her husband hadn't come along, my friend explained, "He's been on the Amazon for four days."
The woman was impressed, "Really? Whatever is he buying?"

今やAmazonと言えば南米のAmazonよりGAFAの一角を占めるAmazonを連想する人が多いのですね。

distinguished

Andrew Watson著 "The Stranger" は多読本で難しい単語や表現はないので直ぐに読み終え、再び同じ著者(Andrew Watson)の "Mercy Killer"（レベル11）借りました。 "Mercy Killer" からは二つの単語を取り上げます。

Professor Agnew looked at Jess with kind eyes. The man looked very distinguished yet young for his age. Jess found him very comforting. As he talked to her, the noise of the bar around them seemed to disappear.

"distinguished" はThe Asiatic Society of Japanの会員になり、会合に参加していた頃毎回の様に耳にした言葉です。その会は高円宮殿下（私が入会した頃で現在は高円宮妃)がpatoronになっているせいで、皇族や、各国の大使等も例会や総会によく出席されていました。その為に、会の始めに司会は "Ladies and gentlemen" だけではなく "distinguished guests" も使っていた事を思い出しました。
Oxford English Dictionaryには "distinguished" の意味、使用法として次の二つを示しています。

1. Successful, authoritative, and commanding great respect.: ‘a distinguished American educationist’
1.1. Showing dignity or authority in one's appearance or manner.: ‘that hairstyle makes you look quite distinguished’

引用した小説の "distinguished" は上記辞書の後者の例と同じですね。

Page Turners

数年前に読んだ多読本のAndrew Watson著 "The Stranger" がとても面白かったので同じ著者の "Deadly Truth" を読むことにしました。この話も展開が速く、とても面白かったのですが、多読本（レベル１２）なので知らない単語や表現は使われていないので、直ぐに読み終えて、このブログのネタになりません。しかしながら、小説の中身ではありませんが、この出版社のシリーズ名 "Cengage Page Turners" の "Page Turners" は日本語で何て言うのか分かりませんが、読んでいて話の内容に引き込まれ、この先はどうなるのか、気になって読むのが止まらない状態になる事を上手く表していると思います。そこで "Page Turners" の辞書での説明を見ることにしました。

・Collins Dictionary: You can refer to an exciting novel, such as a thriller, as a page-turner.: It's an extraordinarily compelling page-turner that also happens to be a major work of literature.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: a book that is so exciting that you want to read it quickly:　Her latest novel is a real page-turner.
・Oxford English Dictionary: An exciting book.: It is a stunning book, a page-turner and thought-provoker.’
・Wiktionary: A written work, usually a novel, which is sufficiently interesting or suspenseful to keep the reader 'turning the pages'.: A non-fiction work, ranging from a brochure to an academic book, may also be considered a page-turner.
名詞として使う場合は普通はハイフンを使う " page-turner" の様です。
