Speedwise

George Orwellの小説 1984は読み終えたのですが、何故かAppendixとしてThe Principles of NEWSPEAKという、Orwellの造語 "NEWSPEAK" について詳しい解説がありました。その一部を引用します。
There was, for example, no such word as CUT, its meaning being sufficiently covered by the noun-verb KNIFE. Adjectives were formed by adding the suffix -FUL to the noun-verb, and adverbs by adding -WISE. Thus for example, SPEEDFUL meant 'rapid' and SPEEDWISE meant 'quickly. Certain of our present-day adjectives, such as GOOD, STRONG, BIG, BLACK, SOFT, were retained, but their total number was very small.
There was little need for them, since almost any adjectival meaning could be arrived at by adding -FUL to a noun-verb.
"NEWSPEAK" は "OLDSPEAK"（すなわち標準英語）に代わる英語で、動詞の過去/過去分詞形は全て原形にEDが付き、SWAM、GAVE、BROUGHT、SPOKE、TAKEN、CAMEなどは全て廃止され、同様に名詞の複数形は語尾にS又はESを付ける形式しか認めないなど、英語を母国語としない私たちなどには非常に分かり易い体系になっています。
上記の引用文は形容詞と副詞についての個所で、その中に出てきた "SPEEDWISE" を見て、最近政治家や企業のお偉方が頻繁に使うようになった新しい日本語、「スピード感をもって云々」を連想しました。
私にはこの「スピード感をもって」が気に入らず、何故、「早急に対処する」とか「迅速に...」などの従来の日本語を使わないのか不思議に思っています。恐らく「スピード感」を使う人は意味を曖昧にする意図で、あるいは本人が直接対処するわけではないので、誰が「スピード感」を感じるのか曖昧な都合の良い言葉として使っているとしか私には思えません。

DOUBLETHINK

George Orwellの小説 1984から "DOUBLETHINK" について説明している個所を引用します。
DOUBLETHINK means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. The Party intellectual knows in which direction his memories must be altered; he therefore knows that he is playing tricks with reality; but by the exercise of DOUBLETHINK he also satisfies himself that reality is not violated.
"DOUBLETHINK" の例を考えて見たら直ぐに思い当たる事がありました。それは日本国憲法です。しかも最初の第１章（第１条～第８条）天皇についての条文です。「天皇は、日本国の象徴であり日本国民統合の象徴であつて...」すなわち天皇は普通の日本人ではなく象徴ですと規定しています。つまり普通の日本人とは別格であり、戦後日本の基本的な概念である（と少なくとも私は思っている）自由と平等とは縁のない人間です。これは正に "DOUBLETHINK" の思考でないと理解できない条文だと考えますが、この事は日本ではほとんど（全く？）問題になっていないのが私の様な凡人には不思議でなりません。

BLACKWHITE

George Orwellの小説 1984にはOrwellがこの小説のため作った言葉が幾つも出てきますが、その内の二つ、BLACKWHITEとDOUBLETHINKを紹介します。
The keyword here is BLACKWHITE. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to BELIEVE that black is white, and more, to KNOW that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as DOUBLETHINK.
黒を白と主張するのは強引な理屈ですが、考えて見ると最近日本の社会でも目立つと言うか、多くなってきた気がする企業、特に大企業による、本来なら不合格の製品を検査合格とするのは黒を白と言うことと全く同じですね。

I'm toast

Reader's Digest 7/8月合併号のLaughter the Best Medicinからの引用です。

When a man is confronted on the street by a tough-looking goon, he murmurs to himself, "I'm toast."
Just then, a ray of light breaks forth from the sky and a voice booms out, "No, you are not toast. Pick up the brick in front of you and bring it down on his head."
Right after the picks up the brick and knocks out the hoodlum, a hundred gun-, nkife- and chain-toting gang members appear, glaring at him angrily.
The voice booms out again. "OK ...now you're toast!"
